Blair Woman Sentenced to Four Days in Jail for Abuse in Girl’s Drowning Death

child-abuse(AP) — A Blair woman has been given four days of jail following a negligent child abuse conviction in the drowning of a toddler under her care.

59-year-old Nancy Tierney was sentenced Thursday after her conviction this month in the death of a 16-month-old Isabella Thallas.

Tierney pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charge. Prosecutors dropped a manslaughter count as part of a plea deal.

Tierney was charged after Isabella drowned last August in a pool at Tierney’s home, which served as a certified day care facility. A court document says Tierney left the girl and other children unattended when she used a bathroom.

A  judge ordered two of the jail days to be severed on anniversaries of the girl’s death.

Tornadoes Touch Down in Oklahoma

noaa(AP) — Meteorologists in Oklahoma have confirmed at least two tornadoes have touched down as a powerful storm system moved through the state. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

The National Weather Service said a tornado touched the ground Thursday near the town of Perkins in northeast Oklahoma. A second tornado was reported near Ripley.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., warned that there was a moderate risk of severe weather over much of eastern and central Oklahoma — the same area where a tornado last week killed 24 people in Moore.

Tornado warnings were in effect Thursday in parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas. The storms can also produce hail.

Storms were also possible in parts of Kansas Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Body of Missing Missouri Mother of Triplets Found in Missouri

 Jacque Sue Waller
Jacque Sue Waller

(AP) — Nearly two years to the day after Jacque Sue Waller was last seen alive, the body of the southeast Missouri mother of young triplets has been found.

The Cape Girardeau County prosecutor’s office issued a one-paragraph statement Thursday. It said police recovered a body on Wednesday that has been confirmed as Waller.

She was 39 when she disappeared on June 1, 2011. No information was released on where the body was found. A woman answering phones at the prosecutor’s office said no further comment would be made, citing an ongoing investigation.

Waller and her estranged husband, Clay Waller, had nearly finalized a divorce when she disappeared. He was charged last year with first-degree murder and goes to trial in September.

Jacque Waller’s sister has custody of their 7-year-old triplets.

Baldwin Filters Expanding in Kearney

baldwin-filters(AP) — A Kearney manufacturer is beginning work on a $40 million expansion that could result in new jobs.

Baldwin Filters held a ceremonial groundbreaking Wednesday to kick off construction of a 400,000-square-foot expansion.

Construction is set to begin in July on the new distribution center. It will replace a 110,000-square-foot center, which Baldwin has outgrown.

Vice President of Operations Dan Schulte says the company has been renting 250,000 square feet of storage space in Kearney.

The new center will more than double the number of loading docks and include a more sophisticated management system.

Company officials say the expansion will lead to more jobs, but they couldn’t say how many.

Baldwin employs nearly 1,000 people in Kearney and also has plants in Gothenburg and Yankton, S.D.

UNL West Central Research and Extension Center to Replace Old Barn

unl-extension

Out with the old and in with the new.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln West Central Research and Extension Center in North Platte is replacing an old dairy barn.

In it’s place will be a new entomology building.  Officials say the structure will be 75 by 40 feet and will be used by researchers studying insects that cause damage to crops.

The dairy barn was being used for storage, but has been deemed unsafe for use.

The cost of the project is about $375,000 and is scheduled to be complete by 2015.

NE Game and Parks Reminds Boaters to Be Cautious of Hazards

Nebraska_game_and_parksLevels on water bodies fluctuate constantly. Nebraska boaters should be aware that rising and falling levels can create hazards.

Many water bodies are flood-control structures where levels rise during heavy rains and wash potential hazards into new areas. Other bodies are used for irrigation and experience draw-downs during the summer, creating and exposing additional hazards.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission offers boaters the following tips:

— Plan an upstream trip when navigating a river. If you have problems, such as engine failure, use the current to drift back to your starting point.

— Never assume there are no hazards. Operators always must be looking for submerged obstacles.

— Operate at a speed that gives you maximum control of your vessel.

— Be alert and avoid distractions.

— Avoid drinking alcohol or riding on the bow.

— Always use caution, especially on waters unfamiliar to you.

— Be sure to have all the required safety equipment on board (read the 2013 Boating Guide athttps://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/boating/pdfs/boatguide.pdf)

Recent heavy rains have swollen the Missouri River, submerging jetties, breakwaters and wing dikes and creating hazards to boaters. These obstacles may not be marked by buoys.

“Striking these submerged obstacles not only can severely damage a boat, but also could cause a boat to become swamped and dump operators and passengers into the river,” said Herb Angell, Nebraska’s boating law administrator.

Angell suggests boaters take a Nebraska boating safety course. Visit BoatSafeNebraska.org for more information.

Nebraska State Fair Launches ‘Fan Club’

state-fair-fan-clubThe Nebraska State Fair Fan Club is set to launch on June 3 for the 2013 entertainment line-up.  According to Chelsey Jungck, Events and Entertainment Director, “We’ve streamlined the process into four easy steps.  Choose the concert you want to see, choose how many memberships you’d like, fill out the billing information and voila, print out your gate admission ticket, which is also your Fan Club voucher, and you’re ready to go.”

Benefits include:

  • Your official 2013 Fan Club Pin
  • Your official Fan Club credentials
  • Your official concert wristband
  • Your official State Fair Tote
  • Preferred section seating
  • No lines.  No waiting.

The Nebraska State Fair Fan Club redemption site will be located at the Welcome Center, just inside the main entrance.  Fan Club Members will have their voucher scanned at the entrance and will retain that same voucher for redemption at the Welcome Center.

Jungck says, “Fan Club members enter the concert through a separate door and can take their seat much closer to show time than other concertgoers.”

The cost to join the Fan Club is $30 per person and is available for the following shows:

Kellie Pickler             Friday, August 23                    7:30pm

Mel Tillis                    Wednesday, August 28           11:00am and 3:00pm

TobyMac                    Thursday, August 29               7:30pm

Eli Young Band         Friday, August 30                    7:30pm

Jungck says, “As in past years, in addition to the Fan Club, free wristbands are also available for these shows on a first come/first served basis.”  Wristbands are available day of show at noon with the exception of Older Nebraskan’s Day and Mel Tillis when wristbands are available at 8am.  All the details can be found on StateFair.org.

Kearney Archway Supporters Make Pitch for County Cash

archway-monument(AP) — Supporters of the bankrupt Great Platte River Road Archway tourist attraction in Kearney have made a pitch for county cash.

Archway supporter Tom Henning told the Buffalo County Supervisors on Tuesday that the board’s support is “going to be key with making this thing work.” The board took no action on the proposal.

The archway backers are asking the county and the city of Kearney for $200,000 a year each in support for three years for a total of $1.2 million. The archway backers also are seeking $140,000 in pledges and donations from individuals and nongovernmental groups.

The archway filed bankruptcy in March. The archway’s filing says it owes more than $20 million to bondholders and other debtors.
