NP Businessman Arrested for Violating Protection Order, Twice

Robert Allberry
Robert Allberry

A North Platte businessman was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center for violating a protection order twice in one day.

According to North Platte Police Department (NPPD) Public Information Officer Rodney Brown, an Officer responded to two separate reports of a male subject violating a Harassment Protection Order on Monday, May 13.

At around 11:00 a.m., police received a report from the victim who reported that Robert Allberry, 49, was yelling obscenities at her place of employment and causing a disturbance.

The Investigator found probable cause to cite Allberry for violating a protection order and issued a summons.

Later that same day, the victim reported to police that Allberry had contacted her via email.  Again, the Investigator found probable cause to cite Allberry, however, this time he was transported and jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Violation of a Harassment protection order is a Class II misdemeanor.

Detention Center records indicate that Allberry is being held without bond.

Allberry is the owner of Computer Troubleshooters in North Platte.

Cell Phone Companies Join Together to Prevent Texting and Driving

texting-and-drivingThe country’s four biggest cellphone companies are set to launch their first joint advertising campaign against texting while driving, uniting behind AT&T’s “It Can Wait” slogan to blanket TV and radio this summer.

The multi-million dollar ad campaign is unusual not just because it unites rivals, but because it represents companies warning against the dangers of their own products. After initially fighting laws against cellphone use while driving, cellphone companies have begun to embrace the language of the federal government’s campaign against cellphone use by drivers.

Beyond TV and radio ads, the new campaign will stretch into the skies through displays on Goodyear’s three blimps. It will also include store displays, community events, social-media outreach and national tour of a driving simulator. The campaign targets teens in particular.

Army General Facing Sex Charges Back in Court

Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair
Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair

(AP)-A U.S. Army general accused of sexual misconduct is scheduled to return to court.

Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair is set to appear Tuesday for hearings before a military judge considering pre-trial motions.

A court martial for Sinclair is scheduled to begin June 25 on charges that include forcible sodomy, indecent acts, violating orders and adultery. The married father of two faces life in prison. He has thus far deferred entering a plea.

The most serious charges involve a female captain who served under Sinclair’s command in Iraq and Afghanistan with whom he admits having an affair.

The woman testified at an evidentiary hearing last year that Sinclair threatened to kill her and twice physically forced her to perform oral sex after they argued.

19-Year-Old Sought in New Orleans Mother’s Day Shooting

new-orleans-shootingNew Orleans police and federal authorities are searching for a young man who’s suspected of opening fire at a Mother’s Day parade in New Orleans, wounding 19.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas identified the suspect late Monday as 19-year-old Akein Scott of New Orleans. Serpas said several people identified Scott as the gunman based on blurry surveillance camera images of the mass shooting.

Serpas said officers would be searching all night and into Tuesday for Scott, whom he called “no stranger to the criminal justice system.” He urged the teen, who has previous arrests on firearms and drug charges, to turn himself in.

Three gunshot victims remained in critical condition Monday, though their wounds didn’t appear to be life-threatening. Most of the wounded had been released from the hospital.

NE Farmers Working to Get Corn Crop Planted

CornNebraska farmers are working hard to plant their corn crop, but this spring’s wet weather has slowed their work.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says about 43 percent of Nebraska’s corn crop has been planted. That’s about 10 days behind the average of 77 percent planted at this point.

Nebraska’s wheat crop continues to be in bad shape. About 48 percent of the wheat crop is in poor or very poor condition. Only about 12 percent rates either good or excellent.

The state’s pastures haven’t grown much this spring, and most of the grazing land in the western half of the state is in bad shape.

Grand Island Man Get Prison Time for Helping Friend Elude Police

gavel-moreA 19-year-old Grand Island man has been given federal prison time for helping a friend get away from police.

Federal prosecutors say Luis Green-Chavez was sentenced on Friday to 12 months and a day in prison. He must serve a year of supervised release after he leaves custody.

In November a jury found Green-Chavez guilty of being an accessory after the fact. Prosecutors say that in August last year, Green-Chavez drove the friend, Alexander Martinez, away after Martinez made a threat to a federal officer at a Grand Island home.

Prosecutors say Green-Chavez sped through town and ran stop signs during a chase by police and later dropped off Martinez and another man. Martinez was captured after a couple days.

Support Shown for Nebraska Death Penalty Repeal

NE Legislature
NE Legislature

A “test vote” in the Legislature suggests that a majority of Nebraska lawmakers want to abolish the death penalty, but there may not be enough support to overcome a filibuster.

Supporters of the repeal measure initiated the procedural vote on Monday to publicly gauge their backing. The vote suggests that 26 of the 49 state senators support the repeal, while 18 want to keep the death penalty in place. Five did not vote.

The vote came after roughly four hours of emotional debate. The repeal measure was introduced by longtime state Sen. Ernie Chambers, who has fought for decades to end capital punishment.

Lawmakers would need at least 30 votes to override Gov. Dave Heineman’s veto, and 33 to force an end to debate.

Healthcare Overhaul Could Cost Hospitals $500 Million in Funding

obama-approvedHospitals nationwide could lose half a billion dollars in federal funding meant to offset the cost of covering the uninsured next year. The loss that will be especially felt in states where lawmakers have decided against expanding Medicaid coverage.

According to rough estimates released Monday by federal health officials, cuts could jump to $4 billion in 2020,

Hospitals around the country that treat a large number of uninsured residents rely on federal funds to offset costs. But the Affordable Care Act assumes more residents will have health insurance and that hospitals will treat a smaller number of uninsured patients.

Marine Officer Faces Trial Over Urination on Corpses

marine-corpsA Marine officer in charge of snipers shown in a 2011 video urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan will be court-martialed.

The U.S. Marine Corps announced Monday that Capt. James V. Clement will be tried for dereliction of duty, conduct unbecoming an officer and failure to stop misconduct by those under his command. The charges were referred for trial following an evidentiary hearing held last month at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

A date for the upcoming court-martial has not been set. Two Marine sergeants have already been convicted in the case with another enlisted soldier still awaiting trial.

Defense lawyer John Dowd says Clement is being scapegoated a result of political correctness and hysteria. Video of the incident posted on YouTube caused widespread outrage among Afghans.
