Omaha PD Revamps Policy on Public Recordings of Police

omaha-policeThe Omaha Police Department has revised its policy regarding the public’s use of cameras in the wake of an investigation into recent excessive force allegations that saw four officers fired.

Police officials say the department has long recognized the public’s right to record the actions of police in public. The revised policy spells out that people cannot be arrested simply for recording police or being near a crime scene.

Police Chief Todd Schmaderer (SHMAH-dur) fired four officers last month after a March 21 incident involving police was secretly recorded. The video showed an officer violently throwing a man to the ground and punching him while he was restrained. Other officers were seen chasing Johnson’s brother, who was recording the arrest, into his house.

12-Year Old Charged in Stabbing Death of 8-Year-Old Sister

Authorities say they have arrested the brother of an 8-year-old girl who was mysteriously stabbed at her home in a quiet Northern California community last month.

Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz told reporters at a news conference that the arrest was made late Saturday afternoon. He says the 12-year-old boy will be charged with homicide.

The boy had told police last month that he encountered an intruder in the home on the day Leila Fowler was killed. He described the man as being tall with long gray hair.

The April 27 attack shook the tightknit Valley Springs community of about 7,400 people and set off a massive manhunt. Investigators did a door-to-door sweep of houses, storage sheds and horse stables.

NP Woman Charged with Witness Tampering After Assisting Inmate

Melissa Eckhoff

A North Platte woman is facing a Felony charge after she helped an inmate at the Lincoln County Detention Center contact his wife whom he allegedly assaulted.

On May 8, the North Platte Police Department (NPPD) learned that Melissa Eckhoff had helped Quincy Shugart contact the victim of his crime, his wife.  Shugart is currently incarcerated for Domestic Assault and several other charges.

An investigation revealed that Eckhoff arranged for contact both over the phone, and via email.

On one occasion, Eckhoff allowed the victim to use her cell phone to contact the jail and speak to Shugart, at which time he attempted to convince her to drop the domestic assault charges.

The victim had blocked Shugart’s ability to contact her directly from the jail, which is why Eckhoff’s assistance was needed.

NPPD Officers contacted Eckhoff and charged her with Aiding and Abetting Tampering with a Witness, a Class IV felony.

The Lincoln County Attorney’s Office also filed Witness Tampering charges against Shugart.

Just north of the community of Bee, the suspect vehicle was rammed by NSP units and came to rest in the east ditch off County Road 252 in Seward County. Once the vehicle was stopped Brokaw fired multiple rounds at troopers who returned fire, fatally wounding Brokaw.  No troopers were injured during the pursuit. There were two primary patrol units involved in the pursuit. Approximately 8-10 units responded to the scene to assist in intercepting the fleeing suspect.
