Nebraska Sends River Water to Kansas

dept-of-natural-resourcesOfficials are releasing water from Nebraska into Kansas to avoid a violation of the Republican River Compact.

The Nebraska Department of Natural Resources said Friday that the water was flowing out of the Harlan County Reservoir, in south-central Nebraska.

Department director Brian Dunnigan says the risk of a violation was too large for state officials to wait until later in the year. The 1943 compact is a water-sharing agreement among Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas.

Nebraska officials say Kansas recently expressed interest in having the Harlan County Reservoir retain some of the water so it could be used in future years. Nebraska officials say they were willing to do so, but only if Nebraska was held harmless for any shortfalls that occurred as a result. No agreement was reached.

Pedro Renteria
Pedro Renteria

A Lincoln man is accused of trying to attack his girlfriend and police officers with a knife.

Police say 32-year-old Pedro Renteria was arguing Thursday with his girlfriend over a set of car keys. An intoxicated Renteria swiped at her chest 10 times with a knife.

The knife did not cut the woman’s skin, but she received several punches to the head.

Police say Renteria tried to attack a responding officer with the knife, and an initial attempt to subdue him was unsuccessful. Renteria tried to slash another officer, and missed his chest by a few inches.

Renteria was eventually arrested. He faces several charges, including attempted first-degree domestic assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

Court records do not list an attorney.

Nebraska Officials Warn of Bogus State Website

DHHSNebraska officials are warning people to be vigilant about using correct state government websites before providing sensitive information.

The state Department of Health and Human Services says an unauthorized website with a similar web address as one that provides an application for economic assistance could be a trick. Officials say it could be a way to get people to type in confidential information. The bogus site also could deliver a computer virus or malware.

The proper state website ends in “.gov” and the fake website ends in “.com.”

Officials say all DHHS websites end in “.gov” and include the words “Official Nebraska Government Website” at the top of website pages.

Mysterious Fish Kill In Eastern NE Has Authorities Puzzled

fish-kill(AP) — Authorities are perplexed as to what may have caused several hundred fish to die in eastern Nebraska.

Officials at David City Park are warning visitors to avoid contact with its lake water while local and state officials investigate the dead fish that started popping up in late April.

Park Supervisor Scott Bales says most of the fish are bluegill, which are the most populous fish in the water.

Officials with the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality have tested the water and they appear to have plenty of oxygen.

Program Specialist David Bubb says one possibility is ammonia, but he couldn’t pinpoint the source. He says water upstream from David City Park does not appear to be affected.

NE Supreme Court Throws Out Traffic Stop That Led to Cocaine Seizure

ne-supreme-courtThe Nebraska Supreme Court says a car momentarily crossing a highway lane divider is not a good reason to stop it — a ruling that likely will overturn the drug conviction of a man whose car was carrying more than 60 pounds of cocaine.

The high court’s ruling came Friday in the case of 26-year-old Doan Au, of St. Louis, who was a passenger in a car pulled over in September 2010. The car was stopped for briefly crossing the line dividing eastbound lanes of Interstate 80. A subsequent search turned up cocaine in the trunk.

Au, who was sentenced to 10 to 12 years in prison, said the trial judge should have thrown out evidence from the stop and search, and the state’s high court agreed.

Boston Bombers Considered July 4th Attack

bostonTwo U.S. officials say the surviving suspected Boston bomber told interrogators that he and his brother considered setting off their bombs on July Fourth, but they decided to carry out their attack sooner and chose the date of the Boston marathon.

The U.S. officials say Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told investigators the bombs were assembled in his brother’s home.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the details because the investigation into the Boston marathon attack is ongoing.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR’ tsahr-NEYE’-ehv) faces a charge of using a weapon of mass destruction to kill. His brother, Tamerlan, was killed in a police shootout.

Three people died and more than 260 were injured in the Boston marathon attack.

Winnebago Tribe to Develop NE Casino

Winnebago-TribeThe chief executive of the Winnebago Tribe’s business arm says it intends to develop a casino at a former horse track in northeast Nebraska.

Lance Morgan of Ho-Chunk Inc. said that the casino would be located at Atokad Downs in South Sioux City, Neb. Ho-Chunk announced in May 2012 that it had bought the track property after the track was closed by the Nebraska Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association.

Morgan says Ho-Chunk’s Atokad development would include a casino, an events center, several dining options and retail shops.

Ho-Chunk recently lost a bid to build a land-based casino to replace the floating Argosy casino in Sioux City, Iowa.

Morgan says the Atokad project faces several legal obstacles in Nebraska, which prohibits casino gambling.
