Three Catholic Schools Close in Omaha

omaha-catholic-schools(AP) — Three Catholic schools in southeast Omaha have closed as part of a realignment of schools.

Thursday marked the end of classes at Assumption-Guadalupe Catholic School and Holy Ghost School. On Friday, St. Stanislaus School closed.

The move was especially difficult at Assumption-Guadalupe because it had helped so many Latino families in recent years.

School principal Rob Laird says about 95 percent of the school’s students come from families that speak Spanish at home.

School officials are encouraging parents to send children to Sts. Peter and Paul School, where the Archdiocese of Omaha has been working to meet the needs of Spanish-speaking families.

Laird says about 56 percent of families with returning students will attend Sts. Peter and Paul and he expects that number to rise.

York Man to Be Sentenced for Child Abuse

child-abuse(AP) — A York man who prosecutors say placed his baby daughter in the care of her drunken mother faces sentencing on July 1.

James Collingham made a deal with prosecutors, who lowered the child abuse charge to a misdemeanor.

County Attorney Candace Dick says the baby was born in December. Police and firefighters were sent to the woman’s apartment in March after neighbors reported smelling smoke. Dick says officers found the baby’s mother passed out, the baby in a stroller and a pan of food burning on the stove.

Dick says Collingham told officers that he and the woman had been drinking but he didn’t know she was drunk when he left her with the baby.

Officials Confirm NE Tornado Reports

The scale reading means it generated winds between 111 mph and 135 mph.

A weather service survey team says there were two tornadoes in Jefferson County and one in Gage County on Monday. The storms included an EF2 twister that coursed over six miles between Diller and Harbine.

Midlands University Bringing Ice Hockey to Fremont

midland-universityNebraska’s largest and fastest growing athletic department is growing again. Midland University officials announced Tuesday the addition of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey programs, pushing the number of varsity sports on the campus to 27.
The record growth that has defined the past three years for Midland is now stretching to the farthest reaches of the Fremont campus where the Sidner Ice Arena will serve as the home for both programs in practice and in competition.

“We are excited to bring quality college hockey to Fremont,” said Midland President Ben Sasse, “We aren’t content to field a team. We want to establish a championship program that embodies the discipline and sacrifice necessary to attain excellence in competition and in life.”

With an agreement reached to make the Sidner Ice Arena the program’s permanent home, University officials have already begun securing scholarship support for future student athletes. With recruiting of the first teams set to get underway this fall, an announcement of a coaching search is expected in the near future.

Since 2009, the University has invested in expanding programs while elevating expectations and quality within extant sports. In the past year alone, the University has enjoyed a trip to the NAIA Men’s Basketball elite eight, a Dance National Championship, a top ranked volleyball program, and a trip to the NAIA National Baseball Tournament.

Though no official decisions have been made regarding alignment, Midland aims to leverage a state of the art facility to quickly build another championship caliber varsity program.

“Very few colleges are fortunate enough to have such a high quality venue located within walking distance of campus,” said newly named athletic director Dave Gillespie. “These students will have everything they need to succeed close at hand and readily accessible.”

As part of the University’s commitment to creating opportunities for students to pursue their passions, and develop skills for life, Midland has added 11 varsity sports in the past three years. The commitment to expanded opportunities to compete and become involved within a residential campus has driven record enrollment growth and resulted in an Athletic Department comprised of more than 600 student-athletes.

In that time enrollment on the Fremont campus has increased more than 86% and is now at record levels.

The unique combination of a very large athletic program existing within a small, tight-knit community has been at the heart of rising attendance levels and enhanced game day atmospheres across the campus.

“The evidence is overwhelming that being engaged, and having a sense of purpose is a key determinant in student success,” said President Ben Sasse. “We are focused on opportunities for students to compete and learn. Hockey is a growing sport with vibrant youth leagues springing up in communities across the state. This is a great thing for the future.”

Midland is working with an exploratory committee to examine opportunities to help grow hockey programs in the region, evaluate leagues where Midland would best fit, and determine a coaching selection process.

While some details remain to be finalized, varsity college hockey is coming to Fremont in 2014.

Lincoln County Smoke-Free Housing List Now Available

smoke-free-housingThe search for smoke-free housing just became simpler with the release of the “Breathe Easier, Smoke-Free Housing in Lincoln County” resource. The list was released to coincide with Clean Air Month in May and World No Tobacco Day on May 31.

The list is available on the Web at https://www.communityconnectionslc.org/tobaccofree.php.

Hard copies can be picked up at the North Platte Area Chamber of Commerce on E and Dewey Street.

“People are becoming more aware of the health hazards associated with secondhand smoke exposure,” said George Haws, coordinator of Tobacco Free Lincoln County. “Additionally, smoke-free housing prevents exposure to thirdhand smoke,” added Haws. “Thirdhand smoke is the name for smoking residue that settles in carpeting, furniture and fixtures.”

Property Manager Kim Hipp, with Coldwell Banker Preferred Group, P.C., said a smoke-free policy is good for owners and tenants alike. “It protects the owner from extra maintenance due to removal of smoke residue; and we want the incoming tenants to have a home that is a much healthier environment for them to live in.”

Wallace Hotel LLC, which rents for short and long-term stays, went completely smoke-free about six years ago, when Charlie and Debbie Andrews became the owners. Debbie Andrews said that when the policy is explained, most people – even smokers – say ‘thank you.’

“Breathe Easier, Smoke-Free Housing in Lincoln County,” is continually being updated, said Haws. Additions can be made by calling 308-696-3356 or emailing tflc@communityconnectionslc.org.

Tobacco Free Lincoln County is a collaborative effort that focuses on keeping youth from starting to use tobacco, reducing access to tobacco products, and increasing awareness about the dangers of secondhand smoke.  It’s funded by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services/Tobacco Free Nebraska Program as a result of the tobacco master settlement agreement.
