Sailors Prove NE Is a Fun Place to Visit

Petty Officer Third Class Kyle Moss
Petty Officer Third Class Kyle Moss

Kyle Moss was in a unique situation last year.

The Petty Officer Third Class sailor grew up in Scottsbluff, Neb., and was stationed on the USS Nebraska submarine when the call came through that eight sailors from the sub were invited to North Platte for the annual Nebraskaland Days celebration.

He’s one of very few men, if any, who have been from Nebraska, were stationed on the submarine named after the Cornhusker State, and who have been invited to the North Platte celebration.

Last year’s trip to Nebraskaland Days wasn’t his first time at the event. He had been to it as a kid, but it was a whole new experience as a sailor, he said. “The hospitality was completely different. Everybody there treated everybody so nice.” People were especially respectful of the sailors, he said.

The sailors are invited to the NLD celebration each year, and are chosen depending on performance. Moss, whose performance was superior, also had another “in”: he was from Nebraska.

He had a little “sales” work to do, in convincing fellow sailors that they would enjoy NLD. “There are a lot of people who say there’s nothing fun to do (in Nebraska.) I say, you need to go. There are a lot of fun things to do.” The seven men who came with him were duly impressed, he said. “They changed their minds that Nebraska isn’t boring. They all liked it, and thought the hospitality was outstanding.”

Each year, sailors from the USS Nebraska, which is stationed in Bangor, Washington, are invited to attend the NLD celebration. They stay with local families and are treated like dignitaries, attending as many NLD activities as possible.

The USS Nebraska has two crews, who each spend six months at sea. If it had been a few months earlier, Moss wouldn’t have been able to come to North Platte; he’d have been on the submarine. The submarine carries nuclear deterrents, and the submarine and its job is to “make people think twice, with us lurking somewhere out there in the ocean. We have the capability and means to destroy things,” Moss said.

Moss, who graduated from high school in 2009 and joined the Navy in 2010, competed in high school rodeo, football, and basketball. His favorite parts of NLD were the rodeo and the classic car show. His parents are Robert Moss of Wright, Wyo., and Marian Moss of Mitchell, Neb.

NE Adjusts to Aging Prison Population

prison(AP) — As more and more Nebraska inmates remain to age in place, behind bars, the state’s prison system is making adjustments.

Among them is a porter program.

Steve Urosevich is chief operating officer of Health Services for the Nebraska Department of Correction Services. He said the inmate health porter program lets inmates help care for the increasing patient load posed by an aging prison population.

Officials use psychological testing and interviews to filter out applicants who may have predatory natures. Starting pay is 38 cents an hour and can go as high as $1.08 an hour, which Urosevich says is good pay for an inmate.

NE Man Pleads No Contest to Strangulation Charge

gavel-and-scale(AP) — A 30-year-old southeast Nebraska man is scheduled to be sentenced July 1 for strangulation.

Paul Potter pleaded no contest to strangulation. The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Prosecutors dropped several misdemeanor charges in exchange for Potter’s plea.

Court records say Potter lives in Friend.

York County Attorney Candace Dick says officers were dispatched to a York house in January to investigate a report of a domestic problem. A woman told the officers that she’d asked Potter to leave, causing him to lose his temper.

Dick says the woman said Potter threw her on a bed and choked her.

Women’s Fight Turns Deadly in Omaha

(AP) — Authorities have release the names of two women who were struck by a car while they were brawling on a street in northeast Omaha.

Police say the two had gotten into an argument in a driveway late Monday night and then began trading blows as their dispute moved into the street. Officers say a passing car struck both women despite efforts by its driver to avoid them.

The Omaha Police Department says 23-year-old Sherrial Onderi was pronounced dead at the scene and that 34-year-old Kimberly Nelson was taken to a hospital. Police say Nelson’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The car driver was identified as 57-year-old Glenda Faulkner, of Omaha.

Angelina Jolie’s Aunt Dies of Breast Cancer

Less than two weeks after Angelina Jolie described her decision to have a double mastectomy to avoid breast cancer in an Op-Ed article in The New York Times, her aunt, Debbie Martin, has died of the disease in Escondido, Calif., The Associated Press reported. She was 61 and died on Sunday.

Ms. Martin was the younger sister of Ms. Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died of ovarian cancer in 2007. Ms. Jolie wrote in The Times on May 14 that it was her mother’s death and the presence of a defective gene, BRCA1, which increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer, that prompted her to have preventive surgery.

Ron Martin, Ms. Martin’s husband, confirmed to The A.P. that she also had the BRCA1 gene, but was not aware of it until after her 2004 cancer diagnosis. “Had we known, we certainly would have done exactly what Angelina did,” he said.

He added that after learning she had breast cancer his wife had her ovaries removed because, like several other women in her family, she had a high genetic risk for ovarian cancer.

Columbus Police Investigate 51-Year-Old’s Death

columbus-police(AP) — Police in northeast Nebraska are investigating the death of a 51-year-old man as a homicide, but authorities aren’t releasing many details.

Steven Jorgensen was found dead in his home on Wednesday after failing to show up for work for three days.

Police say Jorgensen died as a result of a struggle inside his home, but they haven’t said how he died.

Eugene Jorgensen says his son’s death was a shock. He says his son liked his job as a machinist, but had trouble with people breaking into his home.

Steven Jorgensen was the victim of a Jan. 3 assault in which two Columbus women were charged.

Eugene Jorgensen says he wonders if his son’s death is connected to that January incident.
