Margaret Grace Zalud

Margaret Grace Zalud, 92, of North Platte, NE, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013, at her home in North Platte.

Margaret was born June 29, 1920, at St. Louis, MO to Leonard Joseph and Mathilda Tinta Bridges. At the age of nine the family moved to Illinois and three years later her mother moved to Kearney, NE with Margaret and her sister, Vina. Margaret helped out in a bakery and went to school.

On April 5, 1938, Margaret married Herman Jesse Zalud at Minden, NE, and they made their home in Kearney until moving to Salanis, CA in 1940. They moved to North Platte in 1942 and returned to California for a short time then settled in North Platte and started Sportsman’s Drive-in in 1946. They later sold the drive-in and started Zalud Tractor Salvage in 1952.

Margaret attended Bethel Evangelical Free Church. She and Herman were collectors of antiques; she especially loved to collect dolls. Together they traveled to Europe, Egypt, South America, Argentina and around the United States. Margaret also enjoyed sewing, crocheting and quilting.

Survivors include her sons, Herman “Sonny” Zalud, Jr., of Orma, WV, and Zane (Deborah) Zalud, of North Platte; four daughters, Marie (Robert) Sayles, of Lenoir City, TN, Carol Swain and Harriett Dellenger, both of North Platte and Margie (DeWayne) Phillips, of Marshalltown, IA; a son-in-law, David Hanus, of Manitoba, Canada; her sister, Vina Simmons, of Eureka, CA; two stepbrothers, Arthur (Sandy) Bridges, of LaHabra, CA, and Leonard, Jr. (Judy) Bridges, of St. Louis, MO; 24 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; and other family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; a daughter, Darlene Hanus; two sons-in-law, LeRoy Swain and David Dellenger; and her parents, Leonard and Mathilda Bridges.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore. Inurnment will be in the Morning View Cemetery at Wallace, NE. The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore which is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Quilting Group or to PAWS-itive Partners.
