Papillion Officers Cleared in Shooting

papillion-police(AP) — The Sarpy County attorney says officers acted properly during an incident that left a Papillion man with a gunshot wound.

County Attorney Lee Polikov announced Friday there was no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by three Papillion police officers who responded to a disturbance call on May 31.

The attorney says Sgt. Jerry Prazan and officers Robert Morrell and Matthew Elsasser responded to the call and were confronted by the 25-year-old resident, Dennis W. Thomas.

Police say Thomas threatened the officers and then assaulted Morrell, who fired one shot that hit Thomas on his left side. Elsasser also fired a shot, but it missed.

The three officers have been on administrative leave. They will return to work Monday.

Polikov says Thomas will face criminal charges when he’s released from a hospital.
