Indian Center to House NE Tribal Youth Shelter

omaha-indian-reservation(AP) — A youth shelter that closed last year on the Omaha Indian Reservation is expected to reopen in Lincoln.

The shelter is scheduled to have 10 beds available for girls who are 12 to 18 years old, starting in August. An expansion is planned later.

In 1992, the Omaha Tribe became one of 33 tribes across the country to receive federal funding to build and run an emergency youth shelter. The Mark of Honor Youth Lodge operated in Macy until last year, when the tribe evicted the shelter from its building.

Mark of Honor Youth Lodge director Jay Bazemore says the shelter is geared toward Native Americans but also serves non-native children.

The shelter will be a licensed state child care agency.
