Nuggets Resign Backup Center Mozgov

Timofey-Mozgov-Denver-NuggeDENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets have resigned backup center Timofey Mozgov to a three-year, $14 million contract.

Mozgov, who has averaged 3.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 130 career games, figures to get more minutes under new coach Brian Shaw. He averaged 2.6 points and 2.6 boards in 41 games last season.

After helping Russia win the bronze medal at the London Olympics, Mozgov was slated to start last year, but Kosta Koufos wowed George Karl in camp and won the starting job. With JaVale McGee’s big contract, Mozgov was the odd man out.

The Nuggets traded Koufos to Memphis on draft night. McGee is expected to start this season with Mozgov and J.J. Hickson getting backup minutes.

Nebraska’s First Cougar Hunting Season Will be Trial

Mountain-LionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The state’s first mountain lion hunting season next year will be held on a trial basis, then reviewed by wildlife biologists and staff to determine whether there will be a second season.

On Friday, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved the creation of a mountain lion hunting season to begin in 2014.

Stacy Swinney, a Dawson County commissioner from Chadron, tells the Lincoln Journal Star (https://bit.ly/16nfuPK) that most residents in the Pine Ridge area support a long season and would like to see more cougars killed by hunters.

But Angelika Byorth, of Lincoln, says she is considering filing a lawsuit against the commission over the new hunting season. She says the gene pool of the re-emerging mountain lions is too small to sustain a viable population, “let alone all-out hunting.”

Rockies Recall RHP McHugh to Start Saturday

Collin McHugh RockiesDENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have recalled right-hander Collin McHugh from Triple-A Colorado Springs and optioned righty Mitchell Boggs to the minors.

McHugh will start Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Rockies acquired McHugh from the New York Mets for outfielder Eric Young Jr. on June 18. He was assigned to Colorado Springs, where he was 2-1 with a 2.40 ERA in five starts.

McHugh was 0-1 with a 10.29 ERA in one start with the Mets this season. He is 0-5 with an 8.26 ERA in 11 appearances — five starts — in his major league career.

Boggs began the season with St. Louis before being traded to the Rockies on July 9. He was recalled from Double-A Tulsa on July 20 and appeared in two games. He was sent to Triple-A.

Omaha Woman Charged with Embezzling More Than $4 Million

ne-department-of-revenue(AP) — A Gretna woman accused of embezzling more than $4 million from the tobacco and candy business she worked for is facing tax evasion charges.

The Nebraska Department of Revenue and the Sarpy County attorney opted to pursue the tax evasion charges against 54-year-old Caroline Richardson after her former employer, Colombo Candy and Tobacco Wholesale Co, declined to press charges against her.

Instead, the company has gone after an Iowa casino. In a federal lawsuit, Colombo says Ameristar Casino should have known that Richardson was gambling with ill-gotten money.

But Sarpy County Attorney Lee Polikov says Richardson owes $430,000 in unpaid taxes for the $4.1 million she stole from 2010 to 2011. She is charged with three counts of tax evasion and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

harrahs-council-bluffs(AP) — Police and recovery workers from Iowa and Nebraska have pulled a decomposing body from the Missouri River near casinos in Council Bluffs.

Authorities say a boater called 911 Saturday afternoon to report a body floating in the river between Council Bluffs and Omaha, Neb.

No other details of the body or who it may be were released.

Drought Concerns Return to Nebraska and Iowa

dry_land(AP) — Many Midwest farmers are beginning to worry that last year’s drought could return.

The concern is inching closer to reality for a large part of the corn growing region as many states have experienced only spotty rain, with some areas far too dry.

The National Drought Monitor released Thursday says abnormally dry conditions have spread eastward farther into southern Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Portions of Nebraska including the southeast that had May rain are now drying out again.

Rain also seems to have missed southeastern Indiana, which is now listed as abnormally dry after the state had been lifted out of drought.

Corn is in the pollination stage, which determines how much grain it will produce, and needs moisture now to fully develop

NE-State-Capitol(AP) — Activists pushing for new climate change standards are set to hold a weekend rally at the Nebraska Capitol.

The “I Will Act on Climate” event on Saturday is part of a 27-state bus tour to highlight local support for action on the issue. Supporters will gather at 10:30 a.m. to hear from Nebraska state Sens. Ken Haar and Annette Dubas, advocates from the Nebraska Farmers Union, and the CEO of Behlen Manufacturing Company, a metal fabricator based in Columbus.

Participants also plan to form the words, “I Will,” for an aerial photo.

Henry Doorly Zoo Tries to Save Wyoming Toad from Extinction

wyoming-toad(AP) — A breeding program in Omaha is trying to keep a toad native to Wyoming from extinction.

The Wyoming toad is considered critically endangered and one of the four most endangered amphibian species in the United States. The toad is listed as extinct in the wild on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Animals because it can only be found in only one protected place, a pond in the Mortenson Lake National Wildlife Refuge near Laramie, Wyo.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is one of eight U.S. zoos that are breeding the toads for release in Wyoming.

The zoo has sent nearly 2,800 tadpoles and young toads to Wyoming since the program started in 1995.

Rockies LHP Pomeranz Placed on DL, CarGo Sits Out

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies left-hander Drew Pomeranz was scratched from his scheduled start against Milwaukee and placed on the 15-day disabled list because of left bicep tendinitis.

That was just one injury plaguing the Rockies on Friday night. Carlos Gonzalez, forced to leave Thursday’s game against Miami after aggravating the sprained middle finger on his right hand while swinging the bat in the first inning, was held out of the starting lineup. He is day to day.

The Rockies recalled outfielder Corey Dickerson from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take the roster spot created by the disabling of Pomeranz, who was 0-4 with an 8.10 ERA in four starts over two stints with Colorado this season.

Right-hander Collin McHugh, acquired last month from the New York Mets for Eric Young, will take Pomeranz’s start on Saturday and make his Colorado debut. The Rockies will have to make another move to add McHugh to the roster.

It will be McHugh’s second major league start this season. He took the loss on June 1 while with the Mets against Miami.
