Nebraska’s Largest County Digitizing Property Records

douglas-county(AP) — Officials in Nebraska’s most populous county are working to digitize more property records and make them available online.

The Douglas County Register of Deeds is working on scanning all of its old records, so they will be more readily accessible.

Currently, images dating back to 1987 are available online. Register of Deeds Diane Battiato says this project has been in the works for several years.

The goal is to have the records available online by early 2014.

New Beef Processing Plant Doubtful for Scottsbluff

meat-packing-plant(AP) — A proposed beef processing plant likely won’t be going to Scottsbluff.

Mayor Randy Meininger said Thursday at a City Council budget workshop that the Future Food Energy plant developers are looking to locate elsewhere, including nearby Gering.

Questions about financing, doubts raised by some city residents and negative reactions from the city Planning Commission and the area’s economic development agency were cited for the plant developers’ decision.

The nonprofit Twin Cities Development Corporation opposes the plant. The corporation board president, Steve Reisig, says Future Food Energy’s business plan to focus on the South Korean market is unrealistic.

Future Food Energy had offered to buy 43 acres of city land for $10,000 an acre.

On May 22, 1937, Wilma married J. Michael “Mike” Loftus.

During her lifetime, Wilma lived in Nebraska, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, California, Texas, Missouri, New Mexico and Alaska. In her 70s, Wilma learned to use a computer so she could write a book about her life and another about her husband’s life. When the couple could no longer travel, they made their home with their daughter Gin in San Francisco, Calif., and Truth or Consequences, N.M.
Following her husband’s death, Wilma lived with Gin in Anchorage, Alaska, and in May 2011 she moved to Nebraska to live with her daughter, Billie Dee. In November 2012, Wilma moved to Golden Living Center in Clarkson.

Broncos Sign Top Pick Sylvester Williams

Sylvester-Williams-Denver-BENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos’ top draft pick, Sylvester Williams, signed a four-year, $7.6 million deal Thursday, completing an unlikely path from 19-year-old factory worker to NFL riches at 24.

Williams’ deal includes a $3.9 million signing bonus and another $2.2 million in guarantees.

The 313-pound defensive tackle from North Carolina will vie for a starting job with veterans Kevin Vickerson and Terrance Knighton.

Williams started just one football game in high school in Jefferson City, Mo., and was working at a factory making radiator parts when he decided to give the gridiron another chance and walked on at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas.

After two years there, he went on to star for the Tar Heels, and Denver made him the 28th overall pick in last April’s draft.

Brantly Scores Go-Ahead Run in Marlins’ Victory

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Rob Brantly scored on a wild pitch to break up a scoreless game in the eighth inning, Donovan Solano homered in a four-run ninth, and the Miami Marlins overcame a 93-minute rain delay to beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Thursday.

The Rockies, who dropped three of four to the Marlins, lost slugger Carlos Gonzalez after the third inning when he aggravated a sprain of the middle finger on his right hand. He is day to day.

Reliever Adam Ottavino (0-2) struck out the first two batters he faced in the eighth before Brantly singled to right. Greg Dobbs, batting for reliever Dan Jennings (1-1) singled him to third.

With Adeiny Hechavarria at the plate, Ottavino uncorked a pitch that bounced in the dirt and shot past catcher Wilin Rosario, allowing Brantly to score.

Rockies OF Gonzalez Leaves Game with Finger Injury

Carlos-Gonzalez-Rockies-CarDENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies star Carlos Gonzalez left Thursday’s game against Miami after aggravating a sprain on the middle finger on his right hand.

The team listed Gonzalez as day to day.

Gonzalez has been dealing with the injury since July 7 when he hurt his finger during an at-bat against Arizona.

The outfielder was lifted for pinch-hitter Jordan Pacheco in the bottom of the fourth.

Gonzalez came into the game batting .298 with 26 home runs and 67 RBIs.
