(AP) — Authorities say a 93-year-old Omaha woman has died after being beaten and raped.

Omaha police say she died Wednesday, three days after the attack in her home. According to a police report, an officer who was sent to check on the woman found her covered in blood in a bedroom around 9 a.m. Sunday. The officer reported that 19-year-old Sergio Perez was unclothed and passed out on top of the woman.

Perez remained in jail on Thursday, as prosecutors consider a murder charge. Online court records don’t list the name of Perez’s attorney.

Prosecutors say Perez admitted to the assault and rape, saying he was mad at women after a night of drinking.

Perez had been working as a roofer and has no known ties to Omaha.

De La Rosa Pitches Rockies Past Marlins, 2-1

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Jorge De La Rosa tossed six scoreless innings, Todd Helton doubled and scored a run, and the Colorado Rockies held on beat the Miami Marlins 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Michael Cuddyer reached three times and Rex Brothers picked up his sixth save in seven chances with a scoreless ninth.

Miami entered the series having not scored in 37 innings, but it is the Rockies who have struggled for runs in the first three games. They managed one Monday, two against Jose Fernandez on Tuesday and two more against Jacob Turner on Wednesday.

De La Rosa (10-5) made sure the two runs would stand up with another strong performance, and the bend-not-break bullpen helped Colorado snap a two-game skid.

Miller Offers Little on Case, 4-Game Suspension

Von-Miller-Denver-Broncos-FENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Broncos linebacker Von Miller offered no details about his pending drug case and possible four-game suspension, repeatedly invoking the NFL’s confidentiality clause to deflect questions during his session with reporters Wednesday.

The All-Pro pass rusher acknowledged his case is under appeal and promised he would provide some candid answers once the appeal is resolved.

Miller said everything at training camp, which begins Thursday, will be business as usual, while he waits to hear if he’ll be banned beginning Aug. 30 — the day after Denver’s final preseason game.

Coach John Fox took the same tack, citing the confidentiality clause and offering virtually no details. The coach said Miller would practice with the first team until the team receives any official word about the linebacker’s status.

He’s suspected in the killing of 58-year-old Joseph Solomon Jr. in an apartment just blocks from the state Capitol.

It was the third homicide this year in Lincoln. All of the killings have occurred in the past two months.

Work Begins on the Birdwood Viaduct in North Platte

birdwood-north-platte(AP) — Construction has begun on a $10.1 million viaduct project in North Platte that has been discussed for decades.

Crews began hauling in equipment this week for the Birdwood viaduct, and other workers had already started surveying, welding and digging.

The overpass is just west of the Union Pacific Railroad’s Bailey Yard. It will link U.S. Highway 30 to Front Road and offer another entrance and exit to North Platte.

Officials say the project has been discussed for about 30 years.

Union Pacific will pay up to $4.3 million of the cost and Lincoln County will pay a maximum of about $500,000. The state will cover the remaining costs.
