Crop Duster Severs Power Line Near Cozad

crop-duster(AP) — A crop-dusting aircraft has sustained minor damage after severing a power line near Cozad in central Nebraska.

The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Dawson County sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Kostrunek says the plane was spraying a cornfield when it clipped the line. The plane’s damage didn’t keep it from being flown back to its base at the Cozad airport. The pilot wasn’t injured.

A Dawson Public Power District spokeswoman says about 60 customers lost power for a time.

Comstock’s Tyler Viers Joins MPCC Rodeo Team

Tyler-Viers-MPCC-Rodeo-BullWhen World Champion bull rider Dustin Elliott signed on to coach the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Club in January he immediately began keeping an eye out for potential recruits for the team.

One especially promising recruit is Tyler Viers of Comstock. Viers, a recent graduate of Sargent High School, finished seventh in the nation in bull riding at the 2013 National High School Finals Rodeo Championship in Rock Springs, Wyo., on July 20.

Viers, son of Shane and Sandy Hickey and Jason and Cindy Viers, said he has been interested in riding bulls since he was a young child.

“My whole family is a rodeo family and my dad rode bulls when he was younger, so I kind of followed in his footsteps,” he said.

Viers began competing in junior rodeos when he was six, riding sheep and calves first and then gradually working up to riding bulls. He qualified for nationals as a sophomore and junior, but his performance wasn’t what he had hoped for. He fared far better this time around.

With his sights firmly set on a career in bull riding, it just made sense for him to attend North Platte Community College and learn about bull riding from a world champion.

“When Dustin contacted me about rodeoing at the college it sounded like a great opportunity,” Viers said. “At his rodeo clinics he doesn’t just teach how to ride bulls, but he talks about the business side of things too. He definitely seems like a guy I can learn a lot from.”

Viers said he plans to take classes in athletic training while attending NPCC.

“My career goal is winning the world in bull riding, but in case that doesn’t work out I will have the schooling to fall back on,” he said.

“Tyler came to some practices this spring and I could see a lot of natural ability in him,” Elliott said. “He has obviously been very successful at the high school level and I’m sure he’s going to be successful at the college level as well.”

Wyoming Wildfire 15 Percent Contained

Wildfire(AP) — Firefighters are beginning to stop the 1,700-acre wildfire burning near about 50 summer homes in Wyoming.

The Fairfield Fire was 15 percent contained Wednesday because of lines crews have dug on its north side. Firefighters will now try to build some containment lines along the head of the fire near Lander.

The homes and campgrounds in Sinks Canyon were evacuated after it broke out Monday. U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Kristie Salzmann says no homes have been lost. Crews dug lines and an air tanker also dropped slurry to protect them.

It’s the most significant fire of the season so far in Wyoming.

Crews are also fighting a fire burning on about 100 acres in the Medicine Bow National Forest. A 250-acre wildfire in the Washakie (WASH’-ah-kee) Wilderness is being monitored.

Two Lost Hikers Rescued, Then Die in Car Accident

fatal-accident(AP) — Authorities say two women who got lost while hiking in a Maine state park died in a car accident shortly after their rescue.

Thirty-seven-year-old Amy Stiner, of Machias (muh-CHY’-us), and 38-year-old Melissa Moyer, of Sunbury, Pa., were killed Tuesday night when they drove their car into the ocean after driving the wrong way down a road. The county sheriff says Moyer was five months pregnant.

Officials say the women became lost while hiking near Roque Bluffs State Park. A landowner found them and their dog and gave them a ride to a home. Authorities later took them back to their car.

A short time later, the women called to say they had driven their vehicle into the water — and then the phone went dead. The car was later found underwater.

Man Involved in Lincoln Standoff Gets 2 to 4 Years in Prison

Damien Brown
Damien Brown

(AP) — A 29-year-old Lincoln man who held police at bay for nine hours last summer has been given two to four years in prison.

Online court records say Damien Brown pleaded guilty to a weapons charge after prosecutors dropped two other charges. He was sentenced Tuesday by Judge Steven Burns in Lancaster County District Court.

Authorities say officers  were sent to a Lincoln home around 4 p.m. on Aug. 2 after someone reported that a man was pointing a gun out of a window. When the officers arrived, Brown climbed out of a second-floor window and threatened officers, brandishing a knife and screwdriver.

Police say Brown then jumped onto a neighbor’s roof, where he stayed until surrendering around 1 a.m. the next day.

Report Cites Irrigation Value to Nebraska

NE-Farm-Bureau(AP) — A report for the Nebraska Farm Bureau says irrigation was worth $11 billion to the state in agricultural production during the drought last year.

The study released Tuesday was conducted by Decision Innovation Solutions, of Des Moines, Iowa. The study estimated the total impact that irrigated agriculture had on the Nebraska economy in 2012. The economic impact estimates compared Nebraska’s economic activity with and without farmers’ and ranchers’ ability to irrigate last year.

The study also says Nebraska would have had more than 31,000 fewer jobs without irrigation. More than a third of them are outside of direct crop production.

The Nebraska Farm Bureau is an industry group representing more than 56,000 farm and ranch families in the state.

Tennessee Man Gets 5 to 10 Years for Lincoln Bank Heist

Michael Watson
Michael Watson

(AP) — A Tennessee man with more than 15 years left on a Mississippi bank robbery sentence has been given more prison time in Nebraska.

Online court records say 35-year-old Michael Watson, of Hendersonville, Tenn., was sentenced Tuesday in Lincoln to five to 10 years for robbing a U.S. Bank branch on Jan. 22, 2009. He got away with nearly $3,400, and no one was hurt.

Watson had made a deal with Lancaster County prosecutors and pleaded guilty to a lesser robbery charge.

Authorities say the Lincoln bank was but one of 12 Watson robbed over three months in several states: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Ohio, two in Tennessee and one in Utah.
