Fernandez Leads Marlins to 4-2 Win Over Rockies

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Rookie Jose Fernandez tossed seven strong innings and Christian Yelich went 3 for 4 with two RBIs in his major league debut, lifting the Miami Marlins to a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.

Making his first start since appearing in the All-Star game, Fernandez (6-5) baffled the Rockies all evening as he pitched out of several jams and limited one of the league’s top-hitting teams to five hits and two runs. He also struck out eight.

Giancarlo Stanton provided some insurance with a solo homer in the eighth and Adeiny Hechavarria had an RBI double for the Marlins, who have taken two straight in the four-game series against Colorado.

Broncos Release Linebacker Joe Mays

Joe-Mays-Denver-Broncos-FooENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are saving $3.5 million with the release of linebacker Joe Mays, who lost his starting job and then broke his left leg last season.

Not long after signing for $12 million over three years, Mays was suspended a game and docked $50,000 for an illegal hit on Houston’s Matt Schaub. He then lost his middle linebacker job following a poor performance by the defense in a loss at New England.

That relegated Mays to special teams, and he was blocking on a punt return Oct. 28 when a Saints player inadvertently leg-whipped him, fracturing his fibula just above his left ankle, ending his season.

Although healthy again, Mays was the odd man out with Nate Irving, Stewart Bradley and Steven Johnson vying for the job this summer.

A North Platte man is behind bars after he fled from Deputies in his vehicle.

At around 6:00 am on Tuesday, a Lincoln County Deputy observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Front Street in North Platte.

When the Deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver attempted to elude him by driving down an alley and parking in a secluded spot, then fleeing on foot.

Deputies met with residents in the area, but none of them recognized the car or saw anyone running from it.   When Deputies began to tow the vehicle, 31-year-old Freedom Triplett approached them and said that he was the driver.

Triplett told Deputies he was sorry for running just before they placed him under arrest and charged him with Flight to Avoid Arrest.

He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Recall Issued on Salsa Sold by Dollar Tree

dollar-tree(AP) — The maker of salsas sold at Dollar Tree and Deals, Dollar Express and Dollar Bills stores nationwide is recalling the product after large glass pieces were found in some jars.

Olam Tomato Processors Inc. announced the recall Tuesday of its Mild Chunky Salsa with best-by dates of June 2015 and October 2015, and Medium Chunky Salsa with a best by date of July 2015.

Company spokeswoman Roxana Janka says the glass pieces got into the salsa during the beginning of the manufacturing process, when some of the glass jars were damaged. The pieces were not detected by X-rays at the plant because the machines were not calibrated to detect large glass pieces.

The Fresno, Calif.-based company says there have been no reports of injury.

Nebraska Democrats Criticize State Auditor Foley

nebraska-democratic-partyLeaders in the Nebraska Democratic Party are criticizing Republican state auditor Mike Foley for his recent comment that low-income people lack money-management skills.

Foley made the statement last week during a speech hosted by Americans for Prosperity. State Sen. Jeremy Nordquist and Democratic Party Chairman Vince Powers said Foley should apologize for his remarks. Nordquist, a Democrat, said in a statement Tuesday that Foley’s remark shows a lack of understanding of Nebraska residents living paycheck to paycheck.

Foley says the comment was taken out of context from an hour-and-a-half speech, in which he criticized the state for the way it managed an energy-assistance program for low-income residents. Auditors found that the state sent nearly $8 million federal payments directly to customers, instead of their utility companies as required.

Victim of Lincoln Stabbing Dies, Suspect in Custody

stabbing(AP) — Lincoln police say a 58-year-old man has been stabbed to death and investigators have a “prime suspect” in custody.

The man was killed about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in an apartment building, just blocks from the state Capitol.

Police were called to the building and found the man on the floor in an apartment. He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Capt. Jim Davidsaver says police have “the prime suspect in custody,” but he declined to name him because he hasn’t been arrested.

Police also wouldn’t release the victim’s name or give details about the stabbing.

The building is across the street from a Kaplan University parking lot.

Firefighters Union Sues Omaha Over Budget Plan

OMAHA-FIRE-AND-RESCUE-BADGE(AP) — Omaha’s firefighter union has filed a lawsuit against the city and top officials, claiming the mayor’s proposed budget violates a collective bargaining agreement.

The Professional Firefighters Association of Omaha filed the suit Tuesday.

It claims Mayor Jean Stothert’s proposed budget seeks cuts that conflict with Omaha’s obligations under the collective bargaining deal. The lawsuit seeks to block Stothert’s proposal, which the union says violates an agreement requiring the city to meet standards established by the National Fire Protection Association.

Stothert says her proposal for firefighter layoffs and removal of fire trucks would only proceed if the city and union can’t reach an agreement.

Stothert signed an order Friday saying the city will try to comply with association standards while meeting budget needs.

The lawsuit also names Fire Chief Mike McDonnell.

(AP) — A Nebraska state senator who was considering a bid for higher office says he plans to seek re-election in 2014.

Sen. Bob Krist of Omaha said Tuesday that he will not run in 2014 for U.S. senate, the governor’s office or the 2nd district congressional seat held by U.S. Rep. Lee Terry. The 56-year-old Krist has previously said he was looking at all three.

Krist says he decided that he wants to continue his work in the Legislature, especially on services for children and juveniles.

The self-described centrist Republican says he also wants to push back against what he argues is a growing unwillingness to compromise in the officially nonpartisan Legislature.

Krist, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, was appointed to the Legislature in 2010.

(AP) — Dennis Farina’s doctor says the actor died while being treated for lung cancer.

Farina, who died Monday after suffering a blood clot in his lung, had been under treatment for the cancer for several months, according to his cardiologist, Dr. Marc A. Kates.

Thirteen years ago Farina had been diagnosed with “a small cancer that was treated and cured with surgery,” Kates said in a statement on Tuesday.

But in recent months the cancer had recurred and, despite ongoing treatment, the blood clot “unexpectedly and suddenly took his life,” Kates said.

The 69-year-old Farina, who died in a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital, was known for such films as “Get Shorty” and “Out of Sight,” and for TV series including “Law & Order” and “Luck.”

Lincoln Mayor Urges Residents to Conserve Water

(AP) — The mayor of Lincoln is urging residents to conserve water, lest the city have to impose higher rates.

Mayor Chris Beutler on Tuesday asked residents to follow the odd-even daily schedule for outdoor watering. He says that will help keep daily usage under the city target maximum of 70 million gallons a day.

Otherwise, he says, the water rate increases could be imposed if the city declares voluntary or mandatory water restrictions.

Beutler says Lincoln remains about 8 inches below normal rainfall for the past 12 months. He also says flows at the city well fields on the Platte River are down to about a third of normal.
