Man Sought in Death of Washington 4-Year-Old

crime-scene-police-shoot(AP) — Police in Washington state are looking for a man wanted in the shooting death of a 4-year-old boy in Sedro-Woolley, and they found the gun they believed was used.

A Washington State Patrol explosives-sniffing dog found the weapon Sunday under the stairs of a church about a half-block from the house where the child was shot earlier Sunday.

Lt. Lin Tucker said no shell casing was found at the scene, but there is one in the gun, indicating a misfire.

The child’s mother’s boyfriend, 25-year-old Trevor Braymiller, fled the home and police were searching for him in the Big Lake area, about five miles south.

Sedro-Woolley is a town of about 10,000 people about 70 miles north of Seattle in the Cascades foothills.

I-80 Semi Driver Rolls Into Waverly Soccer Field

waverly-high-school(AP) — A weekend crash on Interstate 80 sent a semi rolling into a Nebraska high school soccer field.

The semi rear-ended a camper that was being pulled by a 2004 Ford Expedition, about two miles east of Waverly around 2 a.m. Sunday. The crash caused the semi to veer off the road, sending it into a ditch and a fence before it came to a stop on Waverly High School’s soccer field.

Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins says the impact of the semi destroyed the camper and caused the Expedition to roll. FIve people in the SUV were treated for minor injuries and released.

The semi driver was not injured.

Statue of Liberty Replica Returned to GI After Repairs

statue-of-liberty-replica(AP) — A replica of the Statue of Liberty in Grand Island has been freshened up thanks to local Boy Scouts and others.

The statue at Pier Park originally dedicated in 1950 was looking its age.

The worst damage came from storms in 1980, which broke off the statue’s crown spikes, bent an arm and peppered the artwork with holes.

The local Boy Scouts council and Hall County Historical Society raised $5,000 for repairs.

The statue was artificially aged, except for the torch, to give it an appearance like the actual Statue of Liberty in New York.

The statue was returned to its base July 10 after two weeks of work.

The statue was originally among 200 installed in 39 states, commemorating the scouts’ 40th anniversary.

Charges Expected Following Grisly Discoveries of Bodies in Ohio

crime(AP) — An Ohio police chief says charges are expected Monday against the suspect being held in an investigation into the discovery of three women’s bodies in trash bags.

East Cleveland Police Chief Ralph Spotts says there are no plans to resume searching in and around abandoned houses in the neighborhood where the bodies were found separately on Friday and Saturday.

Spotts on Sunday identified the suspect as 35-year-old registered sex offender Michael Madison. He said Madison is expected to be formally charged Monday, but did not elaborate.

A medical examiner says the bodies were in advanced stages of decomposition, and it will take days to identify the women and determine how they died.

Sunday’s search of about 40 abandoned houses and other areas turned up no more bodies.

Cold Caps to Prevent Hair Loss During Chemo Treatment Tested in U.S.

chemo-cap(AP) — U.S. researchers are about to test a way to thwart one of chemotherapy’s most despised side effects — to see if giving the scalp a deep chill can prevent hair loss.

The idea: Cooling the scalp during chemo slows blood flow, making it harder for cancer-fighting drugs to reach and harm hair follicles.

The approach is widely used in Europe and Canada, where several types of so-called cold caps are sold. But the Food and Drug Administration hasn’t approved their use in this country.

The new study asks if it’s time for that to change. This summer, researchers will begin recruiting 110 breast cancer patients to strap on the DigniCap during their chemo sessions. Photos of their hair will show how well the cap works.

Nebraska Officials to Ponder Mountain Lion Season Anew

Mountain-LionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Game and Parks commissioners will again consider a staff recommendation to create a mountain lion hunting season.

The topic is on the commission’s agenda when it meets Friday in Lincoln. In May, the commissioners rejected creation of a mountain lion hunting season and directed wildlife staff to bring new recommendations to the July 26 meeting.

Officials say mountain lions all but vanished from Nebraska by 1890. The cats have been making a comeback in Nebraska’s northwest corner and have traveled as far east in the state as Omaha. The commission estimates the Pine Ridge area has a population of 22 animals.

The Legislature approved a bill last year allowing for a mountain lion hunting season at the discretion of Game and Parks officials.
