July 18th

On July 18th, 1953, Elvis Presley recorded “My Happiness” as a gift for his mother. It was his first recording.

In 1960, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters released “The Twist.” The song didn’t take off until Chubby Checker covered it later that year.

In 1966, Bobby Fuller of the Bobby Fuller Four was found dead in his car in Los Angeles. The cause of death was not determined.

In 1974, the U.S. Justice Department ordered that John Lennon be deported. A federal appeals court overturned the deportation order in 1975. The following year, Lennon was granted permanent U.S. resident status.

In 1991, the first Lollapalooza festival launched in Phoenix, Arizona. It featured Jane’s Addiction, Living Colour, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Henry Rollins and Nine Inch Nails.

In 1992, singers Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown were married at her mansion in New Jersey. About 150 family members and friends attended the wedding ceremony, which was held in a tent on the mansion’s estate.

In 1993, Rage Against The Machine appeared on the stage at Lollapalooza in Philadelphia wearing nothing but duct tape over their mouths. They stood there in silence for 25 minutes to protest the Parents’ Music Resource Center.

In 2012 Whitney Houston was found unresponsive in her bathtub. It was ruled an “accidental drowning”. On March 22, 2012, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office reported the cause of Houston’s death was drowning and the “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use”.

Cattleman’s Ball Raises $2.1 Million

cattlemans-ball(AP) — The Cattlemen’s Ball raised a record $2.1 million this year, passing the $2 million mark for the first time.

Ninety percent of the money will go to the Eppley Cancer Center in Omaha, with the remainder divided up as grants to health and wellness organizations in the Paxton-Sutherland area. This year’s ball was held June 7-8 at the Hanging H Ranch near Sutherland.

The Cattlemen’s Ball is hosted each year by a different Nebraska family involved in the beef industry. The first ball was held in 1998, and over the years a total of more than $8.4 million has been raised.

Next year’s Cattlemen’s Ball will be held on the Hoot Owl Ranch in Banner County.

Columbus Man Accused of Abusing Infant Makes Plea Deal

child-abuse(AP) — A Columbus man is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 16 for abusing his 4-month-old son.

25-year-old Jeremy Hetrick made a deal with prosecutors and pleaded no contest to a reduced abuse charge earlier this week.

Prosecutors say Hetrick had abused the infant at a Columbus apartment he shared with the boy’s mother.

Court records say Hetrick called 911 on Jan. 22 to report that his son had stopped breathing. Police Capt. Bret Strecker stated in an affidavit that doctors later said the boy had bleeding on the brain and three healed rib fractures.

Strecker said Hetrick acknowledged that he’d lost patience when his son became fussy that night, had squeezed the boy and then head-butted him very hard.

Trial Delayed in Death of Two-Year-Old Gering Girl

(AP) — The trial has been delayed for a 27-year-old man charged with child abuse in the death of a 2-year-old western Nebraska girl.

The original trial date of Aug. 5 has been delayed until Oct. 21. Defense lawyers had sought more time to prepare their case for Dustin Chauncey. He’s pleaded not guilty to a charge of intentional child abuse resulting in the death of Juliette Geurts, of Gering, in July 2008. He was the boyfriend at the time of the girl’s mother, Charyse Geurts. Charges against her have been dismissed because of the statute of limitations.

Colorado prison records say Chauncey is serving time at Kit Carson Correctional Center in Burlington, Colo.

UP Worker Injured in North Texas Train Derailment

Union-Pacific(AP) — A freight train derailment in North Texas has left a Union Pacific Railroad worker hurt and nine cars and locomotives off the tracks.

A Union Pacific spokesman says the derailment happened before dawn Thursday near Aledo (uh-LEE’-doh). The area is about 15 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Mark Davis says two locomotives and seven cars derailed. Davis says six cars were empty and the seventh carried a bulk load of cement that did not spill.

Davis says the 46-car train bound from Tucson, Ariz., to Dallas was pulling out of a side track onto the main line when the derailment happened.

Davis says a crewmember was transported to a hospital with unknown injuries. Further details on the person weren’t immediately available.

UNLNebraska football will give Husker fans an opportunity to get a glimpse inside the program as it presents Football 202 next month. Football 202 will take place on Saturday, Aug. 17, and will give fans the opportunity to get a preview of the 2013 Huskers just two weeks before the season opener.

The one-day session includes the opportunity to hear from the Nebraska coaching staff and former members of the Husker coaching staff. Participants in Football 202 will get a chance to tour the new East Stadium Expansion and will be able to watch the Huskers practice as they prepare for the 2013 season.

The first speaker session of the day will include former Husker assistant coaches George Darlington and Milt Tenopir. The two combined for 59 seasons on the Nebraska football staff and were on the staff of Husker teams that won three national championships and 15 conference titles.

Football 202 participants will spend the latter half of the morning watching the Huskers go through a workout just two weeks prior to the 2013 season opener against Wyoming on Aug. 31.

Following practice and lunch, the afternoon will begin with a tour of the expanded East Stadium. Following the addition of approximately 6,000 new seats, Nebraska’s average attendance will surpass 90,000 for the 2013 season. The afternoon will include two additional panels of speakers, including the current Husker coaching staff.

Other speakers during the day will include Chris Kelsay, a former Husker defensive end who recently retired after 10 seasons with NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Kelsay will give insight into life as a player at both the collegiate and professional levels. Former Husker quarterback Clete Blakeman will share some of his experiences as a referee in the National Football League.

The day’s events will conclude with a social at the Champions Club, just across the street from Memorial Stadium. The cost of $249 also includes coffee and rolls in the morning, lunch and food at the evening social, in addition to a Husker polo.
