Texans Sign Mays

Joe-Mays-Matt-Schaub-TexansHOUSTON (AP) — Houston has signed free agent Joe Mays after the linebacker was suspended and fined last season for a hit on Texans quarterback Matt Schaub.

The Texans confirmed the signing on Tuesday.

Mays knocked Schaub’s helmet off and the star QB lost a chunk of his left ear on the play during Houston’s 31-25 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sept. 23. Mays was fined $50,000 and suspended for one game.

The Houston Chronicle and KRIV-TV of Houston were the first to report the signing. Mays told the television station that he and Schaub talked Monday and made peace. Schaub told the station the hit was “water under the bridge.”

Lawsuit Filed to Challenge Nebraska Petition Law

Secretaryofstate(AP) — An Omaha man is challenging Nebraska’s requirements for ballot-measure petitions.

Kent Bernbeck filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday that seeks to strike two restrictions in Nebraska.

The Nebraska constitution requires petitioners to gather signatures from at least 5 percent of registered voters in a minimum 38 Nebraska counties before the issue raised can appear on a ballot. State law also prohibits commission payments to petition circulators.

Bernbeck argues that both restrictions violate his federal rights to free-speech and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The lawsuit names Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale and the village clerk of Denton as defendants. Bernbeck had collected signatures on a petition in the Lancaster County village, but a judge threw out the petition because one circulator was paid per signature.

Salad Pegged as Culprit in Nasty Stomach Bug

Cyclosporiasis under a microscope

(AP) — Iowa and Nebraska health officials say a prepackaged salad mix is the source of a cyclospora outbreak that sickened more than 178 people in both states.

Public health officials from both states announced their findings on Tuesday. Outbreaks of the same illness have been reported elsewhere in the U.S., but it’s not clear if prepackaged salad mix is also linked to those.

Cyclospora is a rare parasite that causes a lengthy gastrointestinal illness.

Nebraska officials say the salad mix came through national distribution channels. It included iceberg and romaine lettuce, along with red cabbage and carrots.

Local health departments are working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to identify exactly where the contamination originated in the food production chain and where the product was distributed.

Nebraska Man Sentenced to Prison for Distributing Meth

dept.-of-justice(AP) — A central Nebraska man has been sentenced to five years in prison for distributing methamphetamine.

U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg says 36-year-old Luis Jordan was given the sentence Monday. It will be followed by four years of supervised release.

Jordan was convicted of distributing methamphetamine. Prosecutors say he sold 20 grams of methamphetamine in November 2011 to a cooperating witness working with law enforcement in Grand Island. He set up a deal to sell five ounces of methamphetamine to a cooperating witness in Duncan in October 2012.

Officials say Jordan placed at least one bag of the drug in a stuffed animal located in his car.

Friday Could be D-Day in MLB Drug Investigation

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — Friday could be D-day for Major League Baseball’s drug investigation.

Deliberations over suspensions in the Biogenesis case could stretch out for the rest of this week and delay announcements, two people familiar with the talks said Tuesday.

It appeared several of the dozen or so targeted players were likely to reach agreements on their penalties and avoid grievance hearings, one of the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

Both said MLB hopes to announce the penalties for all players involved at the same time.

Fan Day Set for Friday at Memorial Stadium

UNLNebraska football fans will get their first opportunity to see the 2013 Huskers on Friday, Aug. 2 at Nebraska Football Fan Day presented by U.S. Cellular. Friday’s festivities represent the best opportunity for fans to meet and greet this year’s team before the start of practice on Monday, Aug. 5.

Fan Day will run from 2 to 3:30 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium with all Husker players and coaches that will be part of fall camp in attendance and available to the fans.

Fans may enter Memorial Stadium through Gates 3 and 24 on the southeast and southwest corners of the stadium. Gates will open at 2 p.m. The majority of players will be seated on the field at Memorial Stadium, while true freshmen will be located in the stands throughout West Stadium.

Fans are asked to respect players and coaches, as well as other fans by limiting their autograph requests to one item per player or coach. Any apparel items fans are wishing to have autographed should be in hand, rather than being worn. These policies will help accommodate as many fans as possible within the 90-minute Fan Day window.

Free parking for Fan Day will be available in the 14th and Avery Parking Garage, the Champions Club parking lot (west of Memorial Stadium), Lot 8 (north end of Osborne Athletic Complex) and Lot 5 (northeast of Memorial Stadium). Parking is also available in the Stadium Drive parking garage, but fans will be charged for that garage. Parking will not be permitted in Lot 12 (loop on east side of Memorial Stadium).

Restrooms for fans will be available near Gates 2 and 24, as well as under the northeast corner of the stadium near Gate 15. Fans will not have access to the Osborne Athletic Complex, or the new construction areas in East Stadium. Drink stations will be available near the 50-yard line on both sidelines with water, Pepsi products and Gatorade.

Huskers Authentic Team Store will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fan Day and will have brand new adidas products, as well as this year’s media guides and schedule posters.

The Nebraska Athletic Department encourages fans to participate in Fan Day through social media by adding #Huskers to photos and status updates from the day. Nebraska Athletics, in conjunction with Tagboard, will sort through every social media post using the #Huskers hashtag. Tagboard’s technology will allow Husker fans to interact with Nebraska Athletics and post messages to the Big Screen in Memorial Stadium. These posts will also be collected and displayed on Huskers.com.

Tagboard, based in Redmond, Wash., is known as the hashtag hub, because it aggregates posts from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Vine, App.net and Google+. Tagboard breaks down the social media silos, allowing the passionate and proud Nebraska family to connect, engage and support the Huskers.
