Report: Deadly Arizona Wildfire Grew Quickly and Acted Erratically

arizona-wildfire(AP) — An initial synopsis on an Arizona wildfire that began with a lightning strike and caused little immediate concern shows how the blaze quickly turned into an inferno due to extreme weather and wind.

The fire began June 28 outside the small town of Yarnell about 60 miles northwest of Phoenix. It destroyed more than 100 homes before it was fully contained on July 10. Nineteen members of an elite Hotshot firefighting crew died when they were overtaken by flames.

A national team of investigators is working to understand more about the firefighters’ deaths and is expected to finish an initial report in about two months.

The synopsis, released Monday, spells out how the blaze grew from a mere acre to a fast-moving inferno within 36 hours, trapping the firefighters and cutting them off from their safety zone.

Son Accused of Killing His Father in Gretna

gretna-ne(AP) — A 40-year-old man has been arrested, accused of shooting to death his father in the eastern Nebraska town of Gretna.

Steven Braesch is in Sarpy County Jail, awaiting prosecution on charges that include second-degree murder in the slaying of 69-year-old William Braesch.

Sarpy County Attorney Lee Polikov said Monday that a family argument led to the shooting around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Online court records don’t list the name of Steven Braesch’s attorney.

Copper Stolen from Omaha Power Station

oppd(AP) — Police are investigating the theft of copper worth thousands of dollars from a power station run by the Omaha Public Power District.

Officers responded to the power station Friday afternoon following a report of a burglary.

A report says a hole was cut into the northeast corner of the fence and a lock was cut on the west gate.

The copper was valued at $3,000. The additional damage was estimated at $350.

Driver of Stolen Vehicle Rams Omaha Police Cruiser

omaha-police(AP) — Omaha police are looking for the driver of a stolen vehicle who rammed into a police cruiser to avoid arrest.

Omaha Police Officer Michael Pecha says the incident happened shortly before 7 a.m. Monday.

Pecha says patrol officers recognized a vehicle at a gas station near I-80 in eastern Omaha as a possible stolen vehicle.

Once officers confirmed the vehicle was stolen, they pulled into the parking lot. Then the stolen vehicle rammed the police cruiser and backed into a tree.

When officers exited their vehicle, the stolen vehicle hit the cruiser again and fled.

The vehicle was located later in Council Bluffs, and a passenger was arrested, but officers are still looking for the driver.

FDA Approves Brain Scan to Test for ADHD

fda(AP) — The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first medical scan that can help diagnose attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children by measuring brain waves.

The agency cleared the NEBA system to help confirm ADHD for people ages 6 to 17. Doctors can use the device to confirm an ADHD diagnosis or to determine if more testing is necessary.

The device, from Augusta, Ga.-based NEBA Health, measures the frequency of two standard brain waves known as theta and beta waves. Children with ADHD tend to have a higher ratio of these waves than children who don’t have the disorder.

Estimates of ADHD in U.S. children vary, but the American Psychiatric Association states that it affects 3 to 7 percent of school-aged children.

Nebraska Intestinal Illness Cases Climb to 48

(AP) — The number of confirmed cases of a rare food-borne illness in Nebraska has climbed to 48 as state and federal public health agencies try to figure out where it’s coming from.

An outbreak of cyclosporiasis (sy-kloh-spor-EYE’-uh-sis) is confined mostly to Douglas County in eastern Nebraska and is likely linked to Iowa where 71 people were confirmed sick as of Monday.

Nebraska Epidemioloist Dr. Thomas Safranek says fresh vegetables are likely the culprit but the investigation continues.

Consumers should wash fruits and vegetables to reduce the risk of getting the illness, which causes diarrhea lasting an average of 57 days. It’s caused by a parasite carried primarily in human feces that contaminates food.

The illness is rare in Nebraska. No cases were reported in the last four years.

(AP) — Nebraska U.S. Senate hopeful Shane Osborn is reporting that his campaign raised nearly $234,000 during the quarter that ended last month.

The Republican candidate’s campaign announced Monday that Osborn has raised $233,868 between April 1 and June 30. An Osborn spokesman says all of the money was raised in June.

The campaign spent $4,666 during that period.

Osborn, a former Nebraska state treasurer, is seeking to replace outgoing GOP Sen. Mike Johanns, who is not seeking re-election in 2014. Osborn was the first candidate to declare his candidacy.

Omaha attorney Bart McLeay announced last week that he would also run in the primary.

City of Alliance Takes Control of Carhenge

carhenge(AP) — It lacks the cultural significance of the original prehistoric monument in England, but western Nebraska’s junk-car tribute to Stonehenge remains a top tourist draw in state — even if it is more likely to attract gearheads than Druids.

Officials in the western Nebraska city of Alliance next week are expected to take control of Carhenge, the 26-year-old mashup monument to English prehistory and the American automobile.

If the deal is approved, the city in October will assume ownership of the Stonehenge lookalike, once labeled the No. 2 wackiest attraction in America.

Carhenge was built in 1987 by Jim Reinders and his family as a memorial to his father. The monument is comprised of 38 automobiles arranged in a circle to closely resemble the stones at England’s Stonehenge.

Cops Link Indiana Doctor to Four Unsolved Nebraska Deaths

omaha-police(AP) — An Indiana doctor has been arrested in the unsolved deaths of four people linked to the Nebraska medical school he attended before being fired in 2001.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer says 40-year-old Dr. Anthony Garcia was arrested Monday in Illinois.

Schmaderer says Garcia has been linked to the May slayings of Creighton University professor Roger Brumback and his wife, Mary, as well as the 2008 stabbings of 11-year-old Thomas Hunter and his family housekeeper, Shirlee Sherman.

Roger Brumback and Thomas Hunter’s father worked in Creighton’s pathology department. They fired Garcia for erratic behavior in 2001, when he was a pathology resident.

Schmaderer declined to discuss evidence against Garcia, who lives in Terre Haute, Ind. Garcia doesn’t have a listed phone number, and information about his attorney wasn’t immediately available.
