Two Huskers Named to Lombardi Award Watch List

Nebraska-Huserks-Offensive-LinemenLincoln – Nebraska offensive linemen Spencer Long and Jeremiah Sirles were recognized on Monday, as both players are on the initial 2013 Rotary Lombardi Award.  The candidates earned a place on the preliminary watch list by earning All-America honors, being named to their respective all-conference teams or receiving 2013 preseason honors.

Long has been the anchor of the Huskers’ offensive line for the past two seasons. The 6-foot-4, 315-pounder has started the past 27 games for the Huskers at offensive guard. He has played a major role in the Huskers being ranked in the top 15 nationally in rushing in each of the past two years. As a junior, he started all 14 games, helping NU to a 10-4 mark and an appearance in the Big Ten Championship game. He was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection and garnered second-team All-America honors from the AP and Walter Camp Foundation, becoming the first Husker All-American lineman since 2001.

Sirles has been a two-year starter at offensive tackle for the Huskers and enters his senior season with 40 career games played. As a junior, the 6-foot-6, 310-pound tackle enjoyed his best season, starting all 14 games at right tackle and earning second-team honors from both the Big Ten coaches and media. He helped a pair of Huskers rush for over 1,000 yards, while Nebraska led the Big Ten in total offensive and rushing offense.

Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.

Long and Sirles were two of the 12 players from the Big Ten on the list. The Lombardi Award winner will be announced on Dec. 11, 2013, in Houston, Texas.

Study: Later Retirement May Help Prevent Dementia

elderly-living-alone(AP) — New research boosts the “use it or lose it” theory about brainpower and staying mentally sharp.

A study of nearly half a million people in France finds that people who delay retirement have less risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia.

Researchers found that for each additional year a person worked, the risk of getting dementia was reduced by more than 3 percent.

Doctors say the conclusion makes sense. Working helps keep people physically active, socially connected and mentally challenged, and all of those things help prevent mental decline.

The French government’s health research agency did the study. Results were reported Monday at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Boston.

Wisconsin Man to Be Sentenced for Killing Three Daughters

(AP) — A Wisconsin man who killed his three daughters to get back at his ex-wife will soon learn if he’ll spend the rest of his life in prison.

A jury found in April that 35-year-old Aaron Schaffhausen was sane when he killed 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia at their River Falls’ home. He’ll be sentenced Monday in St. Croix County.

He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison for each death. The judge must decide if that sentence will include the possibility of supervised release after at least 20 years, or if Schaffhausen will stay behind bars forever.

Schaffhausen admitted he killed the girls last July to get back at his ex-wife. Jurors found he had a mental defect, but knew the killings were wrong.

Experts Say Civil Rights Case Against Zimmerman Won’t Be Easy

George Zimmerman

(AP) — Legal experts say it won’t be easy for the Justice Department to mount a federal civil rights case against George Zimmerman after a Florida jury acquitted him of state charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

One observer, former U.S. Attorney Alan Vinegrad, says the department would have to show, among other things, that the attack was unjustified and racially motivated.

Those are some of the same challenges that complicated the unsuccessful state case.

The Justice Department says it’s reviewing evidence to determine whether criminal civil rights charges are warranted. It had opened an investigation into Martin’s death last year but stepped aside to allow the state prosecution to proceed.

The NAACP and other groups have called on the Justice Department to open a civil rights case against Zimmerman.
