New Signage Project Marks Lincoln Highway Route in Lincoln County

lincoln-highwayTravelers wishing to experience the historic 1913 “stairstep” route through Lincoln County can now have the confidence that they won’t wander off the track.

With funding from an Improvement grant from the North Platte / Lincoln County Visitors Bureau, the Lincoln County Department of Roads placed nearly 50 directional signs along State Farm Road, Fort McPherson Road and Banner Road, starting at the junction of State Farm Road and Highway 83 and continuing on through to the Dawson County line.

When originally conceived in 1913, the Lincoln Highway had no actual route. Early planners chose local farm-to-market roads to create America’s first transcontinental highway. In Lincoln County, a lack of bridges over the North Platte River and the sandy soil coming down from the Sandhills on the north meant that the hard-bottomed roads south of the South Platte River were the best to be had. This route already had a long, rich transportation history, at first being the route of the travelers along the Oregon and California trails and later the Pony Express. Numerous historical markers exist along the route, and it takes travelers past the Fort McPherson National Cemetery and the statue commemorating the historic Fort McPherson.

The signage project should increase travel along the route.

Game and Parks Closes Area of Lake Maloney Citing Safety Concerns

Nebraska_game_and_parksSafety is always a top priority for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) during summer months when boaters and swimmers are enjoying recreational areas.

To prevent accidents between swimmers and boaters the NGPC has closed approximately 65 yards of waterfront located just north of the south main boat ramp at Lake Maloney State Recreation Area (SRA) to allow boaters and personal watercraft users a buffer area when loading and unloading their vessels.

It is unlawful to swim or bathe in any marinas or within 20 yards of launching, mooring or docking areas.

Roger Thompson, NGPC’s Southwest Law Enforcement Supervisor noted that “There are several designated swimming areas posted at Lake Maloney SRA – swimming in the designated areas makes the water safe and enjoyable for all that wish to spend time at the lake.”

President Obama’s plan for rural America has brought about historic investment and resulted in stronger rural communities. Under the President’s leadership, these investments in housing, community facilities, businesses and infrastructure have empowered rural America to continue leading the way – strengthening America’s economy, small towns and rural communities. USDA’s investments in rural communities support the rural way of life that stands as the backbone of our American values. President Obama and Agriculture Secretary Vilsack are committed to a smarter use of Federal resources to foster sustainable economic prosperity and ensure the government is a strong partner for businesses, entrepreneurs and working families in rural communities.

USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, has a portfolio of programs designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America.

USDA has made a concerted effort to deliver results for the American people, even as USDA implements sequestration – the across-the-board budget reductions mandated under terms of the Budget Control Act. USDA has already undertaken historic efforts since 2009 to save more than $828 million in taxpayer funds through targeted, common-sense budget reductions. These reductions have put USDA in a better position to carry out its mission, while implementing sequester budget reductions in a fair manner that causes as little disruption as possible.
