Bond has been set at $2 million for two Nebraska teens accused of stabbing two female employees at the Nebraska Youth Center in North Platte.

18-year-old Keenan Lambert and 16-year-old Jordan Baker appeared in Lincoln County Court on Wednesday.

Both face charges of two counts of attempted first-degree murder, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, escape and theft.  They are being charged as adults.

Lambert and Baker were charged after they allegedly stabbed Diana Johns and Robin Schneider, who were employees at the youth shelter, then stole Schneider’s car and fled the scene.

A Dawson County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped the duo on Interstate 80 shortly after the incident and placed them under arrest.

The conditions of the victims is unknown.

Lambert and Baker will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on July 18th.

68 Huskers Named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars

UNLA total of 68 Nebraska student-athletes across all sports earned recognition as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars when the conference announced its high honor roll on Wednesday, July 10.

Nebraska’s 68 student-athletes were among 637 student-athletes across 38 sports from all 12 of the Big Ten institutions to earn 3.7 or higher grade-point averages during the 2012-13 academic year. Among the distinguished scholars, 101 completed the year with perfect 4.0 GPAs, including 11 Huskers.

In February of 2008, Big Ten Faculty Representatives established a conference academic recognition to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only student-athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student-athlete’s academic career.

A complete list of the 2012-13 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award winners is attached as a PDF.

De La Rosa Leads Rockies over Padres, 5-4

colorado-rockiesSAN DIEGO (AP) — Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa took a one-hit shutout into the sixth inning and Colorado held on to give the left-hander his straight win against the San Diego Padres, 5-4 on Wednesday night.

De La Rosa lifted his record at Petco Park to 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA. His winning streak against San Diego spans eight starts.

The Rockies were leading 4-0 in the sixth when Carlos Quentin hit his 11th home run, a two-run shot to straight away center field, scoring Chase Headley, who had walked. That was all for De La Rosa (9-5), who allowed two hits over five innings with four walks and four strikeouts.

Andrew Cashner (5-5) went five innings for the Padres, giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits. He struck out five, walked two and threw a wild pitch that led to a Rockies run in the fifth.

NBA Confirms Trade Sending Iguodala to Warriors, Foye to Nuggets

Randy-Foye-Denver-Nuggets-Utah-JazzOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The NBA has confirmed the three-team trade that will send swingman Andre Iguodala to the Golden State Warriors, guard Randy Foye to the Denver Nuggets and a trio of expiring contracts along with a package of draft picks to the Utah Jazz.

The trade announced Wednesday started when the Warriors reached a free agent agreement with Iguodala on a four-year, $48 million deal last week. Golden State cleared more than $24 million by sending Richard Jefferson, Andris Biedrins and Brandon Rush to the Jazz along with four draft picks and cash.

In the end, the teams wrapped all the transactions into one trade that provides additional salary cap flexibility and compensation for each of them.

NebraskaLand National Bank Expanding with Kearney Branch

nebraskaland-national-bankNebraskaLand National Bank is expanding in Central Nebraska.

Marketing Director, Danielle Nichols, said in a news release that the bank is opening a full-service branch in Kearney on July 15.  The branch will employ seven people, five of which relocated from the North Platte bank headquarters.

Nichols said in 2013, NebraskaLand Bank reached $500 million in total assets.  She said the expansion to Kearney will allow the bank to not only increase it’s asset size, but will also lead to job creation in Central Nebraska.

The bank currently has four locations in North Platte as well as a branch in Mullen.

San Diego Man Kills Wife with Cannon, Charged with Murder

cannon(AP) — A San Diego County judge has ruled that a man must face trial for the murder of his girlfriend with a cannon-like device.

Judge Evan Kirvin said Wednesday the prosecution had presented enough evidence for Richard Dale Fox to stand trial on charges of murder, exploding a destructive device causing death and child endangerment.

The 40-year-old faces life in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors say Fox was drinking with friends in the San Diego County town of Potrero when he set off the device, sending shrapnel into his trailer that killed 38-Jeanette Ogara. They say Ogara was Fox’s girlfriend and the mother of his 4-year-old daughter.

Defense attorney Thomas Slattery called the death a freak accident.

Fox has pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

Body of Columbus Man Found in Merritt Reservoir

merritt-reservoir

(AP) — Authorities say they have recovered the body of a Columbus man who apparently drowned in a north-central Nebraska reservoir.

The body of 55-year-old Anthony Blaser was found Tuesday in Merritt Reservoir, southwest of Valentine.

Cherry County Attorney Eric Scott says Blaser was last seen early Sunday morning. His boat was later found abandoned in the reservoir’s Powderhorn area.

Foul play isn’t suspected. An autopsy is planned.

Members of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and Cherry County Sheriff’s Office searched the area for two days before finding Blaser.

Former Hemingford Police Chief Convicted in Teen Sex Case

Mark Lindburg

(AP) — A former western Nebraska police chief has been convicted of attempted sexual assault of a teenage girl.

The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office says former Hemingford police chief Mark Lindburg pleaded no contest Wednesday in Box Butte County District Court to one count of attempted first degree sexual assault of a child. The 53-year-old Lindburg faces up to 50 years in prison when he’s sentenced on Aug. 28.

The attorney general’s office says an investigation showed Lindburg engaged in sexual interactions with a 15-year-old girl while on duty as Hemingford’s police chief.

Lindburg was initially charged earlier this year with first-degree sexual assault and child abuse. In a plea agreement, the sexual assault charge was reduced to attempted sexual assault, and the child abuse count was dropped.
