Nebraska Crops Need More Rain

USDA(AP) — The rain Nebraska received over the past week hasn’t been enough to alleviate dry conditions statewide, but irrigated crops are still doing OK.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says only 24 percent of Nebraska’s subsoil and 31 percent of the topsoil has adequate or extra moisture.

About 78 percent of the irrigated corn in the state is in good or excellent condition. That’s better than the average of 74 percent.

But only about 40 percent of dryland corn is in good or excellent condition. That’s much lower than the average of 64 percent good or excellent.

The USDA says about 64 percent of the soybean crop is in good or excellent shape.

Woman Arrested in Lincoln Memorial Vandalism

lincoln-memorial(AP) — Police have arrested a woman in the splattering of green paint inside two chapels at the Washington National Cathedral and are trying to determine if she has any connection to two similar incidents on the National Mall.

Police say 58-year-old Jiamei Tian was arrested Monday inside the cathedral shortly after the paint was found and charged with defacing property. Assistant D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said investigators were hoping to question her about the vandalism on the Mall, including at the Lincoln Memorial, but a language barrier was complicating those efforts.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Tian had an attorney. Police believed she was homeless.

Green paint was found Friday on the Lincoln Memorial, and symbols have also been found painted in green on another statue on the Mall.
