City Attorney Bob Sivick
Grand Island City Attorney Bob Sivick

(AP) — The city attorney’s job will be on the line at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting in Grand Island.

Mayor Jay Vavricek has added the item to the council’s agenda and is recommending that the council approve the firing of Bob Sivick.

Sivick, who has no employment contract, says he’s surprised by the mayor’s action and intends to fight to keep his job. He says he and the mayor and other city officials have been struggling for two years over how he should carry out his duties. Sivick says he’s been asked to take actions for political purposes.

Vavricek wouldn’t cite any specific incidents that have prompted him to seek Sivick’s ouster, calling it a personnel matter.

Speed Limit Increases on South Buffalo Bill

speed-limit-45Traffic on South Buffalo Bill in North Platte will be moving a little faster.

The Lincoln County Commissioners gave approval to increasing the speed limit from 35 mph to 45 mph on Monday.

The Lincoln County Department of Roads completed a study last month, and made a recommendation to the Commissioners that the speed limit be increased.

Officials say public feedback played a large role in the change.

The study compared the speed limit to how fast motorists were traveling despite the posted speed limit.

County Road Superintendent Jerry Hitchcock says he believes the change will ease the increasing traffic on South Buffalo Bill.

Officials to Keep Conserving Missouri River Water

army-corps-of-engineers(AP) — The recent rains along the upper Missouri River won’t change the plan to conserve water in the river’s reservoirs but they will help improve navigation.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Monday the river basin is still recovering from last year’s drought.

In June, the rain that fell north of Sioux City was slightly above normal. But officials predict the amount of runoff flowing into the river this year will still be only about 88 percent of normal.

So the amount of water being released from the Gavins Point dam on the South Dakota-Nebraska border will remain around 21,000 cubic feet per second.

But the Corps now expects to be able to provide enough water for a full navigation season on the river.

Lincoln School Workers Move Into New Building After Fire

arson(AP) — Nearly 100 workers have moved into the Lincoln school district’s new headquarters.

The new building replaces the headquarters building destroyed by an arson fire more than two years ago. A former district worker last year was sentenced to prison for starting the fire.

More than 70 firefighters responded to the blaze that began the night of May 30, 2011. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The loss was estimated at $20 million.

The first wave of workers moved into the building’s third floor on Monday. Another wave is scheduled to move into the second floor next week, then a final group on July 22.

AP Source: Nuggets to Get Foye in Iguodala Deal

Randy-Foye-Denver-Nuggets-Utah-JazzOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the decision says the Denver Nuggets have agreed to separate sign-and-trade deals that will land them guard Randy Foye from the Utah Jazz and send swingman Andre Iguodala to the Golden State Warriors.

The Warriors had planned to sign Iguodala to a four-year, $48 million deal as a free agent last week. Instead, the restructured deal will give Golden State more salary cap flexibility, deliver Denver a $9 million trade exception and hand Utah another draft pick.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press on Monday because teams are not allowed to confirm moves until the new league year begins Wednesday, says the original Warriors-Jazz deal remains intact.

The Warriors will clear more than $24 million by sending Richard Jefferson, Andris Biedrins and Brandon Rush to the Jazz along with the package of draft picks. Golden State is only taking back Kevin Murphy and his non-guaranteed $788,000 deal from Utah.

Yahoo Sports, which first reported the new deal, says Foye will sign a three-year contract worth $9 million.

Broncos Executive Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

Matt-Russell-Denver-BroncosBRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell is apologizing for his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

State troopers say Russell was arrested Saturday after rear-ending a Breckenridge police officer’s SUV that had stopped on the shoulder of Colorado 9 to pull over Russell, who was suspected of driving drunk. Russell and the officer were taken to hospitals and released.

Town spokeswoman Brodie Boilard says Russell had been in a minor accident earlier Saturday, and the other driver called police after suspecting Russell was intoxicated.

Russell was arrested on charges of DUI, no proof of insurance, careless driving causing injury, and having an open container. He was freed on bond Sunday.

Russell apologized in a statement released Monday by the Broncos, who said the organization is “extremely disappointed.”
