Hail Safety Tips

hailWith severe weather and hail predicted, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH)® reminds families of the following tips to reduce damage and injury before, during and after a hail storm.  Hail could seem like a minor concern, but hail can cause injury, damage to vehicles and damage to homes like shattered windows, pockmarked siding and damaged or destroyed roof coverings.

Before

  • When hail is forecast, close your drapes, blinds or window shades to prevent potential injury from broken glass blowing inside.

During

  • Do not try to go outside to protect your property during a storm. Stay indoors until the storm has passed.
  • Stay away from skylights, windows and doors.

After

  • Verify that you can safely move around outside.  Avoid any broken or downed branches and power lines.
  • Check the trees, shrubs and plants around your house.  If they are stripped of their foliage, there is a possibility your roof is damaged.  Dented patio covers, screens or soft aluminum roof vents could also indicate roof damage.
  • Cover any broken windows and holes in your roof to prevent water intrusion following hail damage.

Cities Rarely Pay Nebraskans for Pothole Damage

pothole(AP) — Authorities say Nebraska law makes it tough for people to recover repair costs when their vehicles are damaged by potholes or other street hazards.

For example, only one person has been reimbursed by the city of Lincoln for pothole damage to tires in the past four years. A claims report says, however, that in the past four fiscal years, the city has denied 70 vehicle owners who claimed more than $33,000 in total damage to tires and rims.

People must show that the cities or counties knew about the problems but didn’t fix them within a reasonable amount of time.

Gary Krumland is legal counsel for the League of Nebraska Municipalities, and he says state law begins with the assumption that government cannot be sued.

Nebraska Man Changes Plea in York Theft Case

gavel-more(AP) — A 31-year-old Lincoln man is scheduled to be sentenced next month in a case involving checks stolen years ago.

Joshua Fehlman changed his plea to no contest after York County prosecutors lowered the theft charge to a lesser felony.

Court documents say that in October 2011 a local bank discovered three false deposits of checks made out to Fehlman. The checks totaled $1,700 and had been written on an account that had been closed for seven years.

The man who had opened the account told investigators that he’d been burglarized several years ago and had closed the account.

Fehlman’s sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 19.

(AP) — Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wife of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and heir to a ketchup company fortune, is in critical condition at a Boston hospital.

A spokesman for John Kerry says the 74-year-old Heinz Kerry was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston Sunday night after doctors at a hospital on Massachusetts’ Nantucket Island stabilized her. The secretary of state was with his wife as an ambulance transported her to the island hospital, and also during her transfer to the Boston facility.

A spokesman for Nantucket Cottage Hospital says Heinz Kerry arrived in critical condition, but doctors were able to stabilize her. Neither the family nor hospital officials released any more details about her condition Sunday night.

In late 2009, doctors treated Heinz Kerry for breast cancer.

Lincoln Man Dies After Removal from Life Support

lincoln-police(AP) — A 27-year-old man who was found injured on June 29 has died after being taken off life support.

Lincoln Police Capt. Jim Davidsaver says David Mueller, of Lincoln, died at 2 p.m. Sunday.

It’s unclear what caused Mueller’s head injury. Davidsaver says an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

A passer-by spotted Mueller on a sidewalk near 14th and Benton streets around 3:30 a.m. on June 29. Mueller’s cellphone and wallet were missing, but Davidsaver says it’s not certain that Mueller was robbed.

Doctors told police they believe Mueller’s injuries were more severe than what would have resulted from a fall.
