Woman Found Dead in Yet Another Omaha Homicide

crime(AP) — Police say a woman found slumped over in a running car is the city’s latest homicide victim.

Police say officers responded early Saturday morning to a report of a vehicle sitting idle and running in a street. When officers arrived they found 46-year-old Annette Plater, of Omaha, slumped over inside. She was declared dead at the scene.

Shell casings found nearby indicate that Plater died of an apparent shooting.

Police said they have no additional information about the death and asked anyone with information about Plater’s death to contact Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP.

One of Two Men Shot in Omaha Dies

omaha-police(AP) — Police say one of two men shot Friday in Omaha has died.

Police say in a news release that 19-year-old Timothy J. Howell, of Omaha, died Friday at Creighton University Medical Center. An autopsy was to be conducted Saturday.

Howell was one of two men found shot early Friday morning.

Police say another man who was a witness to the first shooting walked into the hospital shortly before 3 a.m. Spencer Mason, 22, was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Omaha police say they’re still investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers, and may be eligible for a $1,000 reward.

Avalanche Sign D Andre Benoit

Andre-Benoit-AvalancheDENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche signed defenseman Andre Benoit to a one-year deal on Friday.

Before the start of free agency, newly hired Avalanche coach Patrick Roy (wah) said the team wasn’t going to be very active since the roster was already full. Colorado recently bought out the contract of defenseman Greg Zanon to open up space.

The 29-year-old Benoit played in 33 games for the Ottawa Senators last season, scoring three goals and dishing out seven assists.

Avalanche executive vice president of hockey operations Joe Sakic says Benoit has “good offensive skills and puck-moving ability and will be a good addition to our power play.”

AP Sources: Warriors Clear Space, Acquire Iguodala

Andre-Igoudala-Nuggets-WarriorsOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Two people with knowledge of the situation say the Golden State Warriors and free agent Andre Iguodala  have reached an agreement on a $48 million, four-year deal.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press on Friday because NBA rules prevent confirmation of moves until July 10. One said the Warriors cleared more than $24 million in salary cap space by sending Richard Jefferson, Andris Biedrins and Brandon Rush to the Utah Jazz along with unspecified draft picks.

Yahoo Sports first reported the deal.

Iguodala averaged 13 points, 5.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds for the Denver Nuggets last season.

He spent his first eight years in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Skaggs Goes 8 Innings, D-Backs Beat Rockies 5-0

colorado-rockiesPHOENIX (AP) — Tyler Skaggs pitched eight innings of three-hit ball in his return to Arizona’s rotation, and the Diamondbacks opened a 10-game homestand with a 5-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.

Skaggs (2-1), who turns 22 next week and is considered one of the top pitching prospects in the game, struck out five and walked one after he was recalled from Triple-A Reno for the second time this season.

Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs with a double and single, raising his NL-leading total to 71 RBIs. A.J. Pollock had two hits and scored three times, and Aaron Hill had a two-run single.

Colorado’s Jorge De La Rosa (8-5) gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings.

He had allowed three runs combined in his previous three starts.

Wright Wins Discus at CAC Senior Championships

Chad-Wright-Discus-NebraskaNebraska All-American Chad Wright finished first in the discus at the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Athletics Senior Championships in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico on Friday.

Wright, who came in second in the discus at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships a month ago, notched a throw of 199-5 (60.79) to win the event. In addition, he recently won the discus title at the 2013 Jamaican National Senior Championships.

Two Injured in Nebraska Grain Elevator Explosion

Edgar-NE(AP) — Officials say two people have been injured in a grain elevator explosion in Nuckolls County.

Emergency Manager Tim Stutzman says the explosion happened Friday afternoon in the unincorporated community of Sedan, about five miles southeast of Edgar. Firefighters were still working to put out hotspots Friday night.

The elevator is owned by Aurora Co-Op. CEO George Hohwieler says an employee and a farmer were injured.

They were first taken to Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva before being flown to a Lincoln hospital. Stutzman says he does not know what their conditions are.

The cause of the blast hasn’t been determined. Stutzman says the state fire marshal is investigating.

BREAKING: Wallace Bank Robber Escapes from McCook Work Ethics Camp

One of the men convicted in the botched robbery of Farmer’s State Bank in Wallace has escaped from the Work Ethics Camp in McCook.

According to reports, Drew Steier escaped on Friday evening, and may have stolen a vehicle from McCook.

Steier was sentenced to one and a half to three years in prison in April for his role in the botched robbery.

Steier entered the bank and brandished a fake gun, then demanded money.  Employees of the bank noticed the firearm was a fake, and refused to give Steier any money.

No further information on his possible destination or any other details of the escape were immediately available.

NE Prisons Director Ends Inmate Driver Program

ne-department-of-corrections(AP) — Ten days after a fatal crash involving an inmate-driven prison van, the director of the state’s prisons department has ended the program that allowed inmates to drive state-owned vans to ferry other inmates to and from work-release sites.

Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Director Robert Houston announced the demise of the program Friday at a news conference in Lincoln.

The program had already been suspended last Friday, three days after investigators say a prison van driven by 35-year-old inmate Jeremy Dobbe hit a minivan, killing its driver, 47-year-old Joyce Meeks.

Houston said Friday that inmates who are assigned to work detail jobs will be transported by department staff from now on.

Accused Pedophile Arrested After Standoff in Bellevue

police-lights-red(AP) — An Iowa man suspected of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl has been arrested in eastern Nebraska after a brief standoff with police.

Bellevue police say they received a call around 9:30 a.m. Friday reporting that 25-year-old Diego Campos, of West Des Moines, had sexually assaulted the girl at a Bellevue house. Police say Campos fled the home with a knife, and the search for him began.

Officials found him just before 2 p.m. hiding in a drainage culvert near a wooded area. Campos initially refused to come out, but surrendered less than an hour later. He was taken to a hospital for cuts and later arrested.
