Paws-itive Partners Has Positive Effect on NP Cat Population

paws-itive-partnersIn mid-June, North Platte Animal Shelter was flooded with cats and kittens and faced with the dilemma of reducing numbers.  As an incentive to adopt from the shelter, Paws-itive Partners offered gift certificates for any cat or kitten adopted before July 1.  As a result, in just 10 days, gift certificates were provided with 31 cats and kittens being adopted into new homes.  New adoptive families are expected to use Paws-itive Partners’ spay and neuter gift certificates as soon as possible and at any veterinary clinic in the Lincoln County area.

Paws-itive Partners reminds pet owners, cats and dogs alike, to spay and neuter.   In the United States, millions of healthy cats and dogs are euthanized every year because there aren’t enough people who adopt.  Sterilization is the most humane and effective way to prevent pet over population and reduce euthanasia.

Paws-itive Partners member Susan Kubart reported that April 2013’s Love My Cat campaign was a howling success.  “We were able to help spay and neuter 354 cats!  We had such a great response from pet owners that clinics needed to extend April’s Love My Cat campaign into May to complete the surgeries,” Kubart said.  “We appreciate the clinics that are so supportive of our efforts and the media who helps us spread the word.  We can’t say enough good things about the clinics and media.  We wouldn’t be able to help so many people and pets without them,” Kubart said.  She hopes that with Paws-itive Partners, veterinary clinics and the media working together, someday euthanizing homeless pets in our area can become a thing of the past.

The public is reminded that Paws-itive Partners’ mission is to make spaying and neutering of cats and dogs available to every pet owner.  Low- to moderate-income pet owners can go on line to Paws-itive Partners’ website for an application for financial assistance.  For questions, call Jo Mayber at 308-532-8814.

New Nebraska Research Center to Study Concussions

ConcussionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Concussion research will be one of the primary functions of the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior, which opens later this month at the University of Nebraska.

The center is housed in the new $55 million building attached to Memorial Stadium that holds 38 luxury suites and an additional 6,000 seats for the football stadium.

The center is the latest university-affiliated research facilities looking for better ways to diagnose and treat traumatic head injuries and make football and other sports safer. Center director Dennis Molfese said one of the projects is the development of a device that gives medical personnel the ability to accurately assess the severity of a concussion right on the sideline.

Oglala Sioux Tribal President to Discuss Alcohol Sales in NE

oglala-tribe(AP) — The president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe is scheduled to visit Lincoln next week to discuss alcohol sales in the Nebraska town of Whiteclay, on the border of South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Tribal President Bryan Brewer will give a speech Sunday at Vine Congregational United Church of Christ in Lincoln. The 7 p.m. event is free and open to the public.

Organizers say Brewer is also planning to meet with Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman to talk about alcohol sales in Whiteclay. Activists say the town’s beer stores contribute to social problems on the officially dry reservation.

Last year, Brewer spoke at Chadron State College in northwest Nebraska about his plans to attract small businesses to the reservation while preserving the tribe’s Lakota language.

Minden City Council Discusses Options for Reddish-Tinged Water

city-of-minden(AP) — The Minden City Council is looking for ways to clarify the city’s reddish-tinged water.

City Administrator Matt Cederburg presented the council with a four-phase plan during a meeting earlier this week.

The first phase involves mapping city water and sewer mains at an estimated cost of $45,000. The second phase would establish a $527,386 water tower maintenance system over seven years. That would include cleaning the tower’s tank, painting the tower inside and out and installing mixers to prevent ice buildup.

The third phase would replace Minden’s 47,200 feet of 4-inch water mains, including valves and hydrants, by 2015 for $6.3 to $6.5 million.

The final phase includes the gradual replacement of 6-, 8-, 10-, and 12-inch mains over the next 20 years.

Cuddyer Leads Rockies to 9-5 Win Over Dodgers

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Michael Cuddyer hit a solo homer and drove in three runs to help the Colorado Rockies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 on Thursday night.

Cuddyer, who recently had his team-record, 27-game hitting streak snapped, also added a two-run double as the Rockies avoided being swept by Los Angeles in the three-game series.

Carlos Gonzalez contributed an RBI double before leaving late in the game with an apparent injury. The Rockies had no update.

The Dodgers struggled to drive in runners against Jhoulys Chacin (8-3), a night after setting season highs in runs (10) and hits (17). The hard-throwing righty pitched out of trouble time and again, giving up four runs in 5 2-3 innings.

Tulowitzki Takes Batting Practice

Troy-Tulowitzki-Batting-Practice-RockiesDENVER (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki went through a light round of batting practice on Thursday with minimal pain from his broken rib and thinks he could be back soon, maybe even before the All-Star break.

The Colorado Rockies’ shortstop has been on the disabled list since June 14 after hurting his rib diving for a ball in a loss to Washington.

Tulowitzki says he took “very easy swings” in batting practice before the game against Los Angeles. He still sent quite a few over the fence.

Although his mending rib doesn’t bother his throws, it affects his swing. Says Tulowitzki: “Once the ball has a little extra carry, and less pain, I should be ready.”

Tulowitzki leads the fan voting for the All-Star Game and will attend, even if he can’t play.

MPCC Announces Collegiate Rodeo to be Held During North Platte’s Rail Fest

MPCC-Rodeo-TeamThe National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Great Plains Region recently awarded a collegiate rodeo competition to Mid-Plains Community College to be held during North Platte’s Rail Fest in September.

The “2013 Railtown U.S.A. Collegiate Rodeo” is scheduled to take place Sept. 20-21 at the Nebraskaland Days Wild West Arena in North Platte. Twelve men’s teams and nine women’s collegiate rodeo teams from Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota and Wisconsin compete in the Great Plains Region.

“When you consider that our rodeo program began only three years ago, the fact that we now have world champion Dustin Elliot as our head coach and now we have been awarded to host one of the 10 competitions in our region, I think that says a lot about the positive direction of our program,” said Marcus Garstecki, North Platte Community College Vice President.

8 YO Oklahoma Boy Fatally Run Over at Fourth of July Parade

ambulance(AP) — Authorities say an 8-year-old boy has died after he was run over by a float at the end of a Fourth of July parade in central Oklahoma.

Edmond Police Officer James Hamm says the boy was riding on a martial arts group’s float at the city’s LibertyFest parade on Thursday morning. Hamm says the boy fell or got down from the float at the end of the parade and was struck by the same vehicle.

Police spokeswoman Jenny Monroe says the boy’s father was driving the float.

Hamm says the incident was an unfortunate, freak accident.

Edmond is just north of Oklahoma City.

Thousands of spectators typically line the parade route as bands, floats, antique cars and marching groups pass by.

Two Young NE Girls Injured in Fireworks Accident

fireworks(AP) — Two young girls, their mother and a man are recovering from injuries they received in a fireworks accident west of Fremont.

The Dodge County sheriff said that the girls, ages 2 and 9, and mother suffered injuries to their faces when an improvised firework exploded Wednesday night.

Sheriff Steve Hespen says people were taking apart mortar shells and packing the powder into a cannon. A stick or wooden rod used to pack the powder ended up serving as a projectile when something ignited the powder, sending wooden shrapnel out from the firework.

An adult male also was hurt. The four were taken to a hospital, but details on their conditions were not immediately available.
