Teen Steroid Use Alarming Findings – Awareness Efforts

Teen-Steroid-UseA recent 2012 research study conducted by University of Minnesota researchers found that teens are using steroids and muscle-enhancing substances at higher rates than previously thought.  The study found that 5.9 percent of boys in the survey reported using steroids, while the rate among girls was 4.6 percent. The findings were surprising, especially since some of the steroid users were only in seventh or eighth grade.

Earlier unrelated studies have found that:

1.     Among those who admit using steroids, 80 percent said they believed the drugs could help them achieve their athletic dreams

2.     65 percent of steroid users would be willing to use a pill or powder, including dietary supplements, if it guaranteed they would reach their athletic goals, even if it might harm their health

3.     57 percent of users said they would use it even if it could shorten their lives

4.     About 6 in 10 users believe that professional athletes have the right to use steroids, and they think that using anabolic steroids for athletic purposes is legal.

5.     About 60 percent of users said that professional athletes influenced their (or a friend’s) decision to use PEDs

Topeka Man Who Sold Crack in NP and Other Cities Gets Federal Prison Time

dept.-of-justiceA 29-year-old Topeka, Kansas man will serve time in federal prison for distributing cocaine in Nebraska.

According to a news release from the office of United States Attorney, Deborah Gilg, Jared Howe was sentenced Monday to five years in federal prison.

According to the release, law enforcement received information that Howe and a group of people were transporting cocaine base, also known as crack cocaine, and powder cocaine from the Denver, Colorado area to the North Platte area.  They were also distributing the narcotics in Kansas.

Howe was responsible for distributing at least 96 grams of crack cocaine.

Owens pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge and was sentenced in December of 2012 to 57 months in prison.

Miller was indicted separately for conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine, and was sentenced to 57 months in prison in April of 2012.

NE Road Funding Law Goes Into Effect

road_construction(AP) — A new Nebraska law that sets aside millions of dollars in sales tax revenue for roads projects is going into effect.

A coalition of business, local government and economic development groups kicked off a three-city tour on Monday to promote projects that the money will cover over the next decade.

The law dedicates one-quarter of a cent out of Nebraska’s current, 5.5-cent sales tax for state road upgrades, as well as maintenance for counties and cities. State officials are expected to spend about $600 million on 17 projects throughout the state over the next decade.

Nebraska Highway Commissioner Rodney Vandeberg says the projects will improve public safety.

The law by former state Sen. Deb Fischer went into effect on Monday. The coalition is visiting Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney.

Terry Lockie

(AP) — A Nebraska woman accused of stealing more than $150,000 from an elderly Iowa woman has reached a plea deal.

Terry Lockie pleaded guilty Monday in Woodbury County District Court to one count of dependent adult abuse. A first-degree theft charge has been dismissed.

The plea agreement means a five-year prison sentence has been suspended and the 65-year-old Lockie will be on probation for two years. Her attorney says Lockie may also lose her certified public accountant license.

Lockie, of Homer, Neb., owns an accounting firm in nearby Sioux City. Court records say Lockie had power of attorney for an elderly woman who was suffering from dementia. The records say that between 2008 and 2010, Lockie took money from the woman’s accounts and put it in her own account.
