Looking for a fun, free, family event this summer? As Community Connections celebrates our 25th Anniversary, Community Connections Substance Abuse Prevention System coalition is hosting National Night Out – Celebrate Prevention Tuesday, August 6th from 6-8pm at the Cody Park Shelter. We will be joined by local law enforcement, the fire department, NebraskaLand National Bank, and Midwest Sound Machine. The night will include free hot dogs for everyone and free ice cream and rides for the first 250 kids. Kids will have the chance to try their arm at dunking several of the North Platte Public Schools principals (including Mr. Jeff Steinbeck, Mr. Mike Brownawell, Mr. Tim Vanderheiden, and Mr. Danny McMurtry) along with 6 drawings for backpacks filled with school supplies. One lucky boy and girl will each win a brand new bike!
There will also be a mayoral proclamation regarding the work the coalition does and the importance of events like National Night Out along with information given by Mr. Marty Bassett and Chief Mike Swain. The coalition has hosted this event for several years, and our event is one of thousands going on in cities throughout the US. The goals of this national event are to build community support, celebrate prevention, and invite people to get together and meet their neighbors.
In addition, the Tobacco Free Lincoln County Coalition will have smoke-free home and vehicle pledges for anyone to sign. All pledge signers will be entered in a prize drawing.
If you’re unable to attend but would like to take an active role in your community to make it safer, we encourage you to take a few moments to meet a few of your neighbors that you don’t already know and to turn on your porch light, as crime is less likely to happen in places that are well lit. Community Connections hopes this event provides community members with a fun and safe activity to attend and allows them to learn more about the simple steps anyone can take to prevent the harms of substance abuse and the many programs Community Connections offers.
