(AP) — Families, youths and religious leaders are asking Nebraska’s congressional delegation to support an attainable path to citizenship for parents who are in the United States illegally.

The group on Wednesday delivered children’s drawings, postcards and a banner to the office of U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry in Lincoln. Members are holding similar events outside congressional offices in other parts of Nebraska.

Supporters of a path to citizenship say current U.S. law tears families apart in cases where a parent entered the country illegally, but has a child who is a U.S.-born citizen.

An estimated 4.5 million children who are U.S. citizens have a parent who is in the country illegally.
