Man Sentenced in Shooting Death of Omaha Teen

prison-fence(AP) — A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for the August 2011 shooting death of a 17-year-old girl who was sitting in a car near her home.

Douglas County District Judge Marlon Polk on Friday sentenced Tracey Wooten Jr. to 34 years in prison after he pleaded no contest to manslaughter in the death of Devina Johnson. He will serve about 17 years in prison before being eligible for release.

Prosecutors had initially charged Wooten with first-degree murder but reduced the charges after having difficulty with witnesses.

A second person in involved in the shooting, 23-year-old Tristian Rodriguez-Shelly, was sentenced on a weapons charge to 16 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Wooten and Rodriguez-Shelly were shooting at a rival gang member but hit Johnson. She died later at a hospital.
