Shields Leads Royals over Twins

kc-royalsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — James Shields was sharp for 7 1-3 innings, Alex Gordon had three RBIs, and the Kansas City Royals scored five runs in the eighth inning to beat the Minnesota Twins 6-1 on Tuesday.

Shields — the key part in the deal that sent top prospect Wil Myers to Tampa Bay in the offseason — struck out seven and notched his American-League best 22nd quality start.

Shields (9-8) only allowed one hit through seven innings before running into trouble and leaving in the eighth inning.

Kevin Correia struck out a season-high seven over seven shutout innings, but ended up with a no-decision. Brian Dozier had the Twins’ RBI.

Seven consecutive Royals hitters reached base in a five-run eighth that broke open a scoreless game and handed reliever Jared Burton (2-8) his third loss to Kansas City this season.

Waverly Boy, 15, Killed in Crash

lancaster-county-sheriff(AP) — A 15-year-old boy has been killed in the crash of a car full of teenagers in southeast Nebraska.

Lancaster County Sheriff’s Capt. Ben Houchin (HOW’-chihn) says the accident occurred a little after 7 p.m. Tuesday on a county road just north of Waverly. Houchin says six teenagers were in the car driven by a 15-year-old girl. He says she lost control of it on the gravel road. The car rolled at least twice and landed on its wheels in a ditch next to a cornfield.

Two of the six were ejected, including the boy who died. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office identified him as Taylon Artman, of Eagle. The names of the others involved haven’t been released.

Houchin says none of the other teens’ injuries was considered life-threatening.

Rockies Activate C Torrealba from 7-Day DL

Yorvit-Torrealba-Rockies-CoDENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies activated veteran catcher Yorvit Torrealba from the seven-day disabled list after he was sidelined by a concussion.

He was in uniform for Tuesday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants. To make room on the roster, the Rockies optioned infielder/outfielder Ryan Wheeler to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The 35-year-old Torrealba was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 19. He is hitting .252 with six doubles and 10 RBIs this season as he serves as a backup to Wilin Rosario.

Wheeler has hit .211 in two stints with the Rockies in 2013. He is batting .308 with 81 RBIs in 110 games for the Sky Sox.

Huskers Continue Preparing for Wyoming

Nebraska-Cornhuskers-Football-Blackshirts-HelmetsLincoln – The Nebraska football team continued its game-week preparations for Saturday’s season opener against Wyoming by practicing for a little over two hours in half pads on Tuesday inside the Hawks Championship Center and outdoors at the Gass Practice Fields.

With the season opener just four days away, second-year defensive coordinator John Papuchis said the Husker have made great progress in preparing for a productive Wyoming offense.

“Opening games, we usually get a bit of a jump (on opponent preparation),” Papuchis said. “On a Tuesday in a normal game week, today would be a big install day. Today was a little bit more of a review of the things we put in yesterday because we are a little bit ahead. I feel good about where we’re at. I like the way the guys approached today.”

Papuchis also offered some insight into players who could see significant playing time on Saturday, starting at safety, a position where Nebraska must replace both starters.

“I’m going to wait to say who we’re going to start, but I would imagine that (Corey) Cooper, Harvey (Jackson) and Andrew (Green) will all be playing a lot,” he said. “Charles (Jackson) is working hard. Charles is a talented kid.”

Papuchis then moved onto the linebackers, saying Nebraska’s rotation would depend largely on the type of offense Wyoming is running.

“This game is going to be a little bit unique in the fact that it’s going to be mostly spread stuff, at least that’s what we’re anticipating,” Papuchis said. “Our MIKE linebacker is going to be David Santos. We have a couple of guys that are working at that dime spot; Mo Seisay’s playing there, Nate Gerry’s playing there, Zaire Anderson’s playing there.

“It kind of depends on what we’re seeing. If there’s a tight end in the game for Wyoming, they’re going to see more true linebackers. If it’s four-wide, you’ll probably see more defensive backs.”

Finally, Papuchis was asked to breakdown the battle for starting positions on the defensive line.

“Up front, (defensive end) Jason Ankrah is going to start at one of the spots with (defensive tackle) Thad Randle. If we playedtomorrow, Vincent Valentine would start at the other tackle and the other end would be either (Avery) Moss or (Randy) Gregory.”

The Huskers are expected to feature plenty of younger defensive players on Saturday. All four of the linebackers Papuchis mentioned and two of the four defensive linemen are in their first or second year in the program. But while he’s anxious to see how the youngsters perform in a game, Papuchis said he’s more excited than anything at the arrival of the 2013 season.

“I’m excited for the season to be here,” he said. “Yes, I’m excited to see some of those young guys get their first opportunity to play, but in general, I’m just excited for the year to be here and to get it kicked off on Saturday.”

The Huskers will kick off their 124th season on Saturday from Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.

Duffy Replaces Davis in KC’s Rotation; Pena Signed

Danny-Duffy-Kansas-City-RoyMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Danny Duffy will be recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday to replace Wade Davis in Kansas City’s starting rotation.

Duffy has allowed four runs over his last 22 innings in Omaha while recovering from elbow surgery. The lefty made two starts for the Royals this month, allowing two runs over 9 2-3 innings.

Davis has allowed 11 runs in his last two starts and will move to the bullpen. Since coming to Kansas City in the trade that sent top prospect Wil Myers to Tampa Bay, Davis is 6-10 with a 5.67 ERA.

Duffy will start Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, bumping Bruce Chen back to Thursday.

The Royals also signed Carlos Pena to a minor-league contract and traded for minor league right-hander Clayton Mortensen.

Rockies OF Gonzalez on the Mend

Carlos-Gonzalez-Rockies-CarDENVER (AP) — Carlos Gonzalez says his sprained right middle finger is feeling better after taking a round of batting practice Tuesday and hopes to soon leave for a rehab assignment.

The Colorado Rockies outfielder has been on the disabled list since early August. Gonzalez says the finger remains sore, but he expected as much after doctors told him it wouldn’t be 100 percent until next season.

Asked about the pain, the All-Star said: “It’s something I can play through. … It feels a lot better.”

Gonzalez put on quite a hitting display in batting practice, sending a few pitches into the upper deck. Gonzalez is hitting .302 with 26 homers.

Hours before Tuesday’s game against San Francisco, Roy Oswalt (strained left hamstring) took the field and threw around 60 pitches in a simulated contest.
