Minnesota Woman Beats Boyfriend to Death, Hides Body in Freezer

crime-scene(AP) — Prosecutors say a Minnesota woman beat her boyfriend to death, taped his body up in plastic and hid it in a freezer because he was trying to break up with her.

Jetaun Wheeler is charged with second-degree murder in the killing of the 58-year-old man at their Shorewood home. Authorities have not named the victim.

A criminal complaint says the 29-year-old Wheeler told investigators the man had taken the bus back to Chicago. Detectives say when they searched the couple’s house Aug. 21, they found bloody carpet under Wheeler’s mattress. Blood spatter led them to the garage where they found the body in the freezer.

Authorities are searching for Wheeler’s three children, aged 10, 8 and 7.

Shorewood is 18 miles west of Twin Cities.

(AP) — A 30-year-old Tennessee woman convicted of attempted bank robbery has been given five to 10 years in a Nebraska prison.

Online court records say Nickie Watson, of Hendersonville, Tenn., had pleaded no contest. She was sentenced last week.

Prosecutors say Nickie Watson and her husband, 35-year-old Michael Watson, had robbed a U.S. Bank branch in Lincoln on Jan. 22, 2009. After an arrest later for a Mississippi robbery, Michael Watson confessed to robbing 12 banks in 11 states.

In the Lincoln case, police say Nickie Watson drove the getaway vehicle after Michael Watson left the bank with nearly $3,400. No one was injured.

Last month Michael Watson also was sentenced to five to 10 years in Nebraska custody.

Omaha Woman, 87, Says She’s Got a Gun for the Next Crook

granny-with-a-gun(AP) — An 87-year-old Omaha woman says she’s got a gun for the next crook who wants to steal from her and her husband.

Mauricette and Albert Albin were robbed of personal papers on Saturday. It was the second time the Albins have been crime victims in their south-central Omaha home.

Last year someone pretending to deliver newspapers stole Albert’s wallet.

Mauricette Albin says she tried to stop a man who’d gotten in through an open door on Saturday while Albert Albin was working outside. She tried to keep the man from breaking into their safe. He shoved her away.

Mauricette Albin says she is ready if the crook comes back.

She says that she sees him come in, “I don’t care. I got a gun.”

Huskers Start Preparations for Wyoming

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.-  The Nebraska football team started its game one preparations for Wyoming during a two and a half practice held inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields in half pads Monday evening.

Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck met with media after practice, noting that he believes the team is ready to let the team bonding begin during the season, while also talking about the transition from fall camp to game one preparations.

“I think our guys have had a really competitive fall—and physical, and I think our guys are looking forward to having an opportunity to come together and bond.” Beck said.

As for starting Wyoming preparations, Beck mentioned that the Huskers are already full speed ahead in game one preparations for the Cowboys.

“I think they (Wyoming) play really hard, and all indications is that they switched the team around, so we are preparing for everything.” Beck said, “We want to make sure our guys go out there and play fast, and play hard.”

Watch out for Wyoming’s secondary, Beck believes that the Cowboys could wreak some havoc against the Husker high octane offense.

“I think that is where more of the veteran players are, you don’t know much about some of the lineman or the linebackers.” Beck said, “They play hard.”

Today marked the first day of fall semester classes at Nebraska, and according to Coach Beck, he believes practice today was one of the best practices he has been a part of on the first day of classes.

“Actually (today) might be one of the better ‘first day of school practices’ I have ever been a part of, I have been other places and we wouldn’t have practiced today, we would have practiced yesterday.” Beck said, “It’s such a crazy day, this first day, some of our guys handled themselves pretty well.”

Nebraska will continue preparations Tuesday as the team moves closer to its season opener. NU will face Wyoming on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network. Check back here at Huskers.com for updates revolving around Husker football.

Montee Ball Moves up in Broncos Backfield

Montee-Ball-BroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — John Fox swears he hasn’t lost confidence in Ronnie Hillman even though the second-year running back has had back-to-back games with fumbles returned for touchdowns.

Still, it was rookie Montee Ball who got most of the work Monday with Denver’s starters for the first time all summer.

“It’s just practice,” Fox said. “I wouldn’t read too much into anything. We’re evaluating everybody regardless of who gets what reps at what numbers. He’s a guy that we want to get touches and we’ll go from there.”

Hillman, a second-year speedster from San Diego State who played sparingly last year, bulked up over the winter and was given first crack at winning the starting job.

Huskers to face Penn State on ESPN2 Big Monday

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – The Nebraska women’s basketball team will play its first-ever game as part of ESPN’s Big Monday package, when the Huskers play host to Penn State on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

ESPN announced Nebraska’s game time with the Lady Lions, as part of its Big Monday package on ESPN2. The ESPN2 Big MondayWomen’s Basketball series begins on Jan. 13 and runs through March 3. It includes 10 games with doubleheader nights on Jan. 27 and Feb. 10. It is the eighth season of Big Monday on ESPN2. Nebraska and Penn State are the only Big Ten teams featured in the series.

The late-February game between the Huskers and Penn State at Pinnacle Bank Arena is Nebraska’s first Big Ten Conference game announced this season. A full non-conference and Big Ten schedule will be announced soon.

Nebraska’s game with Penn State could have conference championship implications. The Huskers battled the Lady Lions in the final regular-season home game in the history of the Devaney Center last season with a share of the Big Ten title on the line. Penn State came away with the victory to secure sole possession of the regular-season title, while Nebraska finished as the Big Ten runner-up.

The Huskers went on to advance to their second NCAA Sweet 16 in the past four years, while Penn State was one of six Big Ten Conference women’s basketball teams to advance to the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Nebraska, which produced the second-most victories in school history in 2012-13 by finishing with a 25-9 overall record, returns four starters from the team that finished 12-4 in the Big Ten. Two-time first-team All-Big Ten forward Jordan Hooper headlines the list of Nebraska’s returning players. The two-time honorable-mention All-American will be a contender for national player-of-the-year honors as a senior, while challenging Nebraska’s career scoring, rebounding and three-point records.

Hooper, a 6-2 senior forward from Alliance, Neb., led the USA Basketball Women’s World University Games team to a gold medal this summer in Russia.

Junior forwards Emily Cady (Seward, Neb.) and Hailie Sample (Flower Mound, Texas) have both joined Hooper in NU’s starting five for every game each of the past two seasons. Rachel Theriot, a Big Ten All-Freshman selection last season, also returns to Nebraska’s starting lineup. Juniors Tear’a Laudermill (Riverside, Calif.), Brandi Jeffery (Vacherie, La.) and Katie Simon (Roseville, Calif.) all add experience, along with sophomore Sadie Murren (Colon, Neb.) for reigning Big Ten Coach-of-the-Year Connie Yori’s squad.

Freshmen Allie Havers (Paw Paw, Mich.), Hannah Tvrdy (Seward, Neb.) and Esther Ramacieri (Repentigny, Quebec) add new faces to the 2013-14 Husker roster.

Penn State finished with a 26-6 overall record that included a 14-2 Big Ten mark last season. The Lady Lions will be led by returning Big Ten Player-of-the-Year Maggie Lucas. She will be joined by seniors Dara Taylor, Ariel Edwards and Talia East.

Fans can reserve their spots and select their seats for season tickets right now by visiting Huskers.com/arena. The Nebraska women’s basketball team will play 18 regular-season home games and a pair of exhibition games at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Season ticket prices are just $160 for the lower bowl of the arena.
