Abortions in Nebraska Fall to 20-Year Low

DHHS(AP) — Abortions in Nebraska have fallen to at least a 20-year low following passage of state laws that restrict the practice, but a number of factors could be behind the trend.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says the number dropped to 2,299 last year, a decline of more than 3 percent. The numbers have dropped consistently since 1992, when more than 5,600 abortions were reported.

Nebraska Right to Life executive director Julie Schmit-Albin says part of the decline is likely due to a 2010 Nebraska law that bans abortions starting at 20 weeks into a pregnancy.

University of Nebraska assistant law professor Beth Burkstrand-Reid says the decline could also be due to other factors, including the more effective use of birth control.

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersLincoln, Neb. – The 10th-ranked Nebraska volleyball team held its annual Red/White Match on Saturday evening at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in front of a sellout crowd of 8,243 fans. The Nebraska alumni team, led by Olympians Jordan Larson and Nancy Metcalf, took the match 2-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-22) on the historic night at the Devaney.

Kelsey Fien and Morgan Broekhuis led the Huskers on the night with 12 kills each. Broekhuis tallied a .357 hitting percentage, while Fien notched a clip of .280. The Huskers started the match fighting point-for-point with the alumni. A kill by Broekhuis gave NU the lead at 5-4, but the alumni would come back to take a 15-9 lead after a kill by Metcalf and a hitting error by the Huskers. A kill by Fien would cut the alumni lead to 17-13, but it would not be enough as they would go on to take the first set 25-19.

Fien led the Huskers in the first set with five kills, while Pollmiller tallied five assists and Hunter had four assists. The Huskers also notched 11 team digs and two team blocks.

NU came out to a 5-3 lead in the second set on a kill by Amber Rolfzen. Nebraska went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a kill by Broekhuis to extend its lead to 14-8. The Huskers then strung together another 5-0 run to make it 21-12. NU would go on to win the second set 25-17 and even the match at one set apiece.

Meghan Haggerty and Broekhuis each had four kills in the second set, while Fien notched three. Pollmiller paced the offense with 11 assists. The Huskers recorded a .344 team hitting percentage of the set.

Nebraska opened the third set down 6-2 on a hitting error, but came back to cut it as close as 12-10 on a kill by Fien. The Huskers then cut it 17-16 on a kill by Ostrander, but the alumni pulled ahead 23-18 and went on to take the third set 25-22.

Haggerty and Broekhuis both had four kills in the third set, while Pollmiller tallied 11 assists. Nebraska posted 15 team digs and three team blocks in the set.

The Huskers open the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Billiken Invitational hosted by the University of Saint Louis. Nebraska will face Louisiana-Monroe on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and will take on Auburn on Saturday at 10 a.m., before a match-up with Saint Louis at 7 p.m.

Ogletree Shines in Rams’ 27-26 Loss to Broncos

DenverBroncosDENVER (AP) — Rookie linebacker Alec Ogletree ruined Ronnie Hillman’s night with a strip-and-score takeaway and kept Peyton Manning from turning all those passes into points with a big interception. Yet the St. Louis Rams’ lost 27-26 at Denver on Saturday night.

Ogletree ripped the football from Hillman’s arms, scooped it up and trotted 13 yards for the score one week after Hillman’s fumble at the goal line was returned 106 yards for a touchdown in Seattle.

Manning completed 25 of 34 passes for 234 yards in one half, but Ogletree’s pickoff just before halftime set up Greg Zuerlein’s 58-yarder field goal that gave the Rams a 20-10 lead at the break.

Ogletree also had a half-dozen tackles and two pass breakups in his breakout preseason performance.

Omaha Man Sentenced for Threatening IRS Officers

irs(AP) — A 45-year-old Omaha man has been sentenced to three years of probation for a misdemeanor conviction of assault, resisting or impeding a federal officer.

Walter Trizila was sentenced Thursday.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Nebraska says IRS officers were trying to seize a dump truck owned by Trizila’s employer on Nov. 8 when Trizila entered jumped into a front-loader, scooped a full load of dirt into the bucket and drove directly at the IRS officers.

Authorities say Trizila nearly hit one of the officers before dumping the entire load of dirt at their feet, blocking their attempts to take the truck.

Driver Fleeing from Beatrice Police Crashes and Dies

beatrice(AP) — Officials say a driver being chased by Beatrice police has died in a crash.

Police Sgt. Brian Carver tells Beatrice said police first received a call about a car weaving in and out of traffic around 1 p.m. Saturday. Carver says the car took off when police tried to pull the driver over.

The chase ended about five miles south of the city when the car plunged off a bridge and flipped onto its top, killing the man driving.

Police have not yet released the man’s identity. No one else was in the crashed car, and no one was injured during the pursuit.

Nebraska law requires a grand jury be convened anytime someone dies while in custody or being pursued by police.

West Nile Cases in Nebraska Rise

mosquitoe(AP) — The number of people who have contracted West Nile virus has risen.

Nebraska health officials said Wednesday that they had recorded 11 human cases of West Nile virus in the state for 2013. By Friday, that number had risen to 14.

Four people have been hospitalized with the virus. No one has died this year from the virus.

West Nile is transmitted to people through mosquitoes that feed on an infected bird. Most people with the virus will have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms. A small percentage will develop a serious illness.

Last year, there were 193 human cases of West Nile virus in Nebraska and four deaths.

Lincoln Man Who Kidnapped Wife May Be Headed to North Platte Area

(AP) — Lincoln police are looking for a man who kidnapped his estranged wife at gunpoint Saturday from the hair salon where she worked.

Police say at least two witnesses saw Dwayne Lawrence take his wife, Julie Hanes, from the Audacious Hair Salon & Massage around noon Saturday. The couple was gone before officers arrived.

Police found Lawrence’s truck at his work Saturday, but didn’t find Lawrence and Hanes.

Court records show that Hanes filed for divorce July 30 about two weeks after getting a protection order against Lawrence. She told a judge that Lawrence had threatened her several times.

Police say they believe the couple may be headed west toward Imperial, North Platte or Denver in a gold 1998 Chrysler Concorde with license plate number TKA048.
