NPCC Lady Knights Volleyball Start Season 2-0

NPCC-Knights-LogoThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights volleyball team opened up their season with a resounding 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-14) victory over the Williston State College Tetons. The Knights returned to the floor immediately to face the Sheridan College Lady Generals where the Lady Knights knocked off the Lady Generals 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-14, 27-25)

The first set of the year saw the Lady Knights emerge victorious 25-23 over the Tetons. The Lady Knights then cruised to a 25-17 victory in the second set before winning the third set in dominating fashion 25-14. The Lady Knights were led in kills by Sabrina Hallahan and Samantha Kennedy who both recorded nine. Kylie Wroot also chipped in eight kills. Joli Hopping contributed 19 assists while Laura Beckman had 12. Shannon Liewer led the Lady Knights in digs with 31.

The difference in the game was the Lady Knights controlled the net and did a good job receiving serves according to head coach Sally Thalken. “I was very happy with the way we played,” said coach Thalken. “We started out a little tentative but did a lot of good things. We have a lot of improving to still do but game experience is invaluable for our kids.”

The Lady Knights opened up their second game of the young season with another hard fought opening set win 25-22 over the Lady Generals. The set was knotted at 22 apiece before three freshman made plays to seal the win. Kylie Wroot got things started with a big kill before Samantha Byrn had an ace serve to give the Lady Knights game point. Samantha Kennedy delivered the winning kill to give the Lady Knights the opening set win.

The second set saw the Lady Generals take a highly contested battle 23-25 from the Lady Knights. The Lady Knights responded by dominating the third set on the way to a 25-14 victory. The fourth set was a hard fought battle as the game went back and forth before the Lady Knights were able to pull out the 27-25 set and game victory.

“I was really proud of our kids,” said coach Thalken. “They really stuck in there and played some scrappy ball. I thought we really played aggressive.”

The Lady Knights were paced by Sandrina Hallahan with nine kills and six blocks. Samantha Kennedy had eight blocks. Laura Beckman had 48 assists and Joli Hopping had 42. Shannon Liewer led the Lady Knights with 23 digs.

“I thought we controlled the game with our passing and ball control,” said Shannon Liewer. “We really worked hard on our serve receive. I thought we were able to keep our momentum up and we really connected as a team.”

Huskers Dominant in 4-0 Victory Over Redhawks

huskersoccerLincoln – The Nebraska soccer team controlled play for the much of the contest and outshot Southeast Missouri State by a 30-3 margin en route to a 4-0 regular season-opening victory on Friday evening at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

The Huskers wasted no time getting some offensive production, taking the lead less than three minutes into the contest. Freshman Jaycie Johnson’s shot from the right side was deflected and landed in the path of a hustling Mayme Conroy who put it into the left side of the goal from close range for the early 1-0 advantage.

NU held possession for much of the first half as the strong Husker defense did not allow the Redhawks to record a shot in the period, while Nebraska notched 14 shots with seven coming on goal.

The Huskers continued to dominate early in the second half with a perfectly executed corner kick off the foot of Sam Areman that was headed in by Conroy for her second goal of the game and 17th of her career at the 48:21 mark for the 2-0 lead.

Nebraska quickly extended the lead to 3-0 when Johnson earned her first career goal as a Husker in the 52nd minute, beating the Southeast Missouri keeper to the far post after a give-and-go pass from Caroline Flynn.

Johnson made it a multi-goal debut with just minutes remaining as she was taken down in the penalty area after she eluded the Redhawks defender. Johnson converted on the ensuing penalty kick as she fooled the keeper to the right side, giving NU the 4-0 victory to open the season.

The 30 shots on offense for the Huskers equaled its season-high from last year. NU also recorded 14 shots on goal, a total that was bested twice in 2012.

Freshman Kelly Schatz made a pair of saves in 17 minutes of action after she came on in relief for starting goalkeeper Emma Stevens, who moved into second place alone on the all-time list of Husker keepers for games played in goal with 49.

Stevens did not have to make a save on the evening as the NU defensive pressure kept the Redhawks at bay until the 74:19 mark of the contest when Southeast Missouri recorded its first shot of the night.

The Huskers will be back in action looking to start a winning streak this Sunday when they host the Cincinnati Bearcats for a Noon contest.

Feds to Pay for Majority of Repairs at Chadron Airport

chadron-airport(AP) — The federal government has agreed to pay up to $7.5 million to help repair taxiways and the main runway at Chadron Municipal Airport in northwest Nebraska.

The Panhandle Post website for Chadron radio station KQSK says (https://bit.ly/16QB3N0) the work is needed because concrete from a repaving project in 2000 has failed.

Chadron Public Works Director Milo Rust says the horizontal cracks were discovered last summer during a sealing project. He says the concrete failure has been blamed on an unexpected chemical reaction involving the silica sand used in the cement mix.

Rust says experts aren’t sure what caused the reaction. He says the concrete used in 2000 met specifications and passed required tests at the time.

He expects the project will begin next spring and could take a year.

Omaha Woman Indicted for Social Security Fraud

dept.-of-justice(AP) — A 46-year-old Omaha woman has been charged in a two-count federal indictment with fraudulently getting and using Social Security supplemental income payments.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Latosha Bolton was indicted this week. She faces one count of receiving a Social Security check through the mail based on false representations. She faces a second count of stealing money from the Social Security Administration.

Prosecutors say Bolton filed for the payments for her daughter, shortly after the girl was born in 1993, saying the girl lived with her. But authorities say the girl did not live with Bolton, and Bolton did not spend the payments on the girl. In all, prosecutors say, Bolton fraudulently collected nearly $125,000.

Bolton faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Health Alert Issued for Martin Bay Portion of Lake McConaughy

DHHS The state has issued a health alert for toxic blue-green algae at the Martin Bay area of Lake McConaughy. This is the only health alert currently in effect, and it only affects the Martin Bay portion of Lake McConaughy.

Weekly sampling has been conducted at 50 public lakes in Nebraska since the beginning of May. Samples taken earlier this week at Martin Bay were above the state’s health alert threshold of 20 parts per billion (ppb) of total microcystin (a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.)  Martin Bay is located at the northeast end of Lake McConaughy, and due to low water levels, the bay is currently not connected to the main lake. Because only the isolated Martin Bay area appears to have toxic blue-green algae, the alert is only for that area and not the main portion of Lake McConaughy.

The alert will continue at the Martin Bay for at least two more weeks, because lakes that are on health alert must have two consecutive weeks of readings below the threshold before the alert is discontinued.

When a health alert is issued, signs are posted to advise the public to use caution, and the Martin Bay swimming area will be closed during the alert. Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is advised to avoid activities that could involve accidental ingestion of water and to avoid full immersion in water in Martin Bay. People can still use the public areas for camping, picnics and other outdoor activities.

The lakes will continue to be monitored weekly throughout the 2013 recreational season. Sampling results for toxic algae and bacteria will be updated every Friday and posted on NDEQ’s web site, https://deq.ne.gov.
