Eagle Radio of North Platte to Provide Exclusive Coverage of NPCC Sports

NPCC-&-Eagle-RadioNorth Platte Community College is pleased to announce that Eagle Radio of North Platte, representing MIX-97,1410AM- ESPN, and Q-Country 107.3, will hold exclusive radio broadcast rights to all NPCC athletic events and serve as the “Exclusive Radio Voice of the Knights and Lady Knights” for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Robert Lovell, sports director at Eagle Radio, will provide live “play-by-play” broadcasts of NPCC Knights women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s basketball and women’s softball games throughout the year.

“NPCC athletics have awesome teams that consistently make deep post-season runs and we’re hopeful that this upcoming year will be no different,” said Marcus Garstecki, NPCC Vice President. “We are pleased and excited that Eagle Radio will partner with us to provide game coverage of our teams this year.”

“We’ve had an excellent longtime relationship in the coverage provided by Eagle Radio Sports, but it was somewhat informal. This new agreement formalizes our relationship,” said Chuck Salestrom, Area Associate Vice President for Public Information, Marketing and Development. “We believe Eagle Radio is passionate about our athletics. Chuck Schwartz was truly “the voice” for years and provided countless hours of sports radio coverage. Then when Dan Lucero took over, the coverage didn’t miss a beat. Now, with Robert Lovell at the play-by-play mic, we know the passion and quality will continue to be excellent.”

According to Jerome Gilg, Eagle Radio general manager, coverage will begin with Coach Sally Thalken’s Subway Volleyball Tournament beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23.

“We want to build on our longtime coverage of the Knights and make it even more of a commitment,” said Gilg. “Robert will do a great job calling games and also on his daily sports show, ‘The Blitz,’ airing from noon until 1 p.m. daily on 1410AM-ESPN Radio.”

Games may be heard on 1410AM-ESPN. The college will also provide a link to Eagle Radio’s coverage of the Knights on its athletic website found at: https://npccknights.com/

“We’re planning a number of new and exciting events and activities at our games this year. We’ll be unfolding those special nights as they get close,” said Salestrom. “As they say in radio – stay tuned!”

NCAA Reverses Course on Marine Playing at MTSU

marine-corpsMURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — The NCAA has ruled that a Middle Tennessee football player who spent five years in the Marines will be allowed to compete this fall and that he will have four years of eligibility remaining.

It’s a reversal from the NCAA’s earlier decision to rule Steven Rhodes was ineligible because he played in a recreational league during his military service. School officials had said earlier Monday that they were working with NCAA officials to come up with a solution.

Late Monday afternoon, the NCAA issued a news release saying they wanted to thank Roberts for his service, wished him well and that member schools would continue to re-examine the competition rules.

Middle Tennessee President Sidney McPhee says it “exciting news” and thanked the NCAA for the review.

Court Allows Scholarship Case vs. NCAA to Proceed

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA has lost another round in court, this time over scholarships.

A judge in the Southern District of Indiana rejected a motion from the NCAA to dismiss a case brought by former college football player John Rock.

Rock contends that after playing three seasons at Gardner-Webb in North Carolina, a new coaching staff refused to renew his scholarship. Rock says that forced him to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket to earn his degree.

Rock says the one-year scholarship used by schools at the time and NCAA-mandated scholarship limits limited his choices. The NCAA now allows schools to offer multiyear scholarships.

Dawson County Raceway August 18

Dawson-County-Raceway-ResulCelebrating the 100th anniversary of racing in Lexington, Nebraska; the racers did not disappoint in finishing the season in fine fashion, bringing the large crowd in attendance to their feet on championship night at Dawson County Raceway on Sunday evening.
Driving their way into the IMCA Victory Lane was Colton Osborn, Chad Dolan, Jeff Whiting, Tiffany Bittner and David Dembowski.
Working the cushion early and stepping his way down the track to the bottom of the corners in the late circuits was the winning formula for IMCA Modified rookie Colton Osborn of Cozad, Nebraska to pick-up the Feature victory. Osborn led the first twelve laps by riding around the top groove on the cushion before being edged at the line after a caution flag flew where Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, Nebraska rocketed around the bottom of the track. Osborn regained the lead on lap 15 and never looked back as he circled the oval in the low groove to notch the win. Herbst held onto the runner-up position after driving to the front from the sixth row at the drop of the green flag. Styling the Captain America colors was Jay Steffens of North Platte, and he did the cartoon hero proud with a podium finish in third place. Steffens began his journey to the podium in the third row of the starting grid.
Starting on the pole was all that Chad Dolan of Gibbon, Nebraska needed in using the clean air to cruise to his 19th IMCA Northern Sport Modified Feature victory of the season. Dolan led all 15 laps and was clutch on the restarts to hold off all challenges. Starting in the front row right next to Dolan was the runner-up Denny Egge of Kearney, Nebraska. Rounding out the top three finishers in the highly contested Northern Sport Modified feature was Bryan Herrick of Curtis, Nebraska as he started in the second row.
Leading the lap that mattered the most, Jeff Whiting of Gothenburg led by less than the length of a fender on the white flag lap, which turned into the way that the IMCA Stock Cars would finish, as a result of a big-time accident in corners one and two. Whiting hugged the inside berm for much of the contest to drive to the front from the fourth row to claim the victory that has eluded him at Dawson County Raceway. Leading the way from the onset, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood secured the season points title with his runner-up finish. Finishing his 2013 campaign at Lexington in fine fashion was Jared Brooks of Indianola with a third place finish from his seventh row starting spot.
Igniting the crowd to a full-on roar was Tiffany Bittner making the pass for the win in the IMCA Hobby Stock Feature to give the Norfolk driver a back-to-back feature winner at Dawson County Raceway. Bittner drove to second place in the early laps of the feature, following Neligh veteran driver Jason Wilkinson for the first 12 circuits, but it was on the final laps that Bittner made her move in a big way to power into the lead and record the victory. Wilkinson stayed up on the wheel and recorded the runner-up accolades. Testing the waters on the inside berm and then returning to the cushion, Dillon Thompson of Campbell rounded out the podium finishers with a third place finish.
Grabbing the lead early and never looking back, David Dembowski of Grand Island cruised to the IMCA Sport Compact Feature victory by leading from start to finish. Jacob Olmstead of Overton tried to reel in Dembowski for the whole feature and his effort to stay with the leader resulted in a second place finish. Returning to the podium at Dawson County Raceway with a successful night was Dalton Smith of Gibbon in third place overall.

NP Couple Lends a Helping Hand to Local Widow

both-handsA North Platte couple is asking the community to pitch in and help a local widow.

On Saturday August 24th, Ryan and Sarah Alexander will be working on the home of Wilma Hackney, assisting her with home improvement projects.  Hackney, of North Platte, has been a widow since 1998, but that hasn’t slowed her down. She’s spent most of her life helping orphans through the Nebraska Foster Care system, and now it’s time to give back.

Businesses and individuals can help by donating supplies and offering assistance with the projects the Alexanders will be working on.

But the purpose of the project is two-fold.

Not only are the Alexanders wanting to give their assistance to Ms. Hackney, the are also hoping to raise funds to help offset the costs of adopting a little girl from Ghana.

The Alexanders are working with the Both Hands Foundation, which is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to serving widows, orphans and adoptive families.  Founded in 2008, the Nashville-based nonprofit’s purpose is to help people raise funds for orphans while serving widows through home improvement projects such as painting, de-cluttering, cleaning and landscaping.

Ryan says volunteers will be sponsored in much the same way as someone running a 5K or participating in the golf tournament in an effort to raise funds.  The families involved recruit a team of friends to work on a widow’s house.  In advance of the project, teams ask family members, friends and businesses to sponsor them for a day of labor.

All sponsorship funds raised go to help offset the high cost of adoption.

To date, Both Hands has helped over 7,900 people serve a widow in need in their community, and completed over 266 projects.

The Alexanders are currently waiting to be matched with a child from Ghana.  They hope to bring their new child home within the next year.

Donations can be made online at www.bothhands.org/ryan-and-sarah-alexander .

New Lyme Disease Estimates: 300,000 Cases a Year

tickHealth officials say Lyme disease is about 10 times more common than previously reported.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says as many as 300,000 Americans are actually diagnosed with Lyme disease each year.

Previously, the CDC said the number ranged from 20,000 to 30,000. But CDC officials have known that doctors don’t report every case, and the true count was probably much higher.

The CDC surveyed labs and reviewed insurance information to come up with a better estimate, which was released Monday.

Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria transmitted through the bites of infected deer ticks. Symptoms include fever, headache and fatigue. It is treated with antibiotics.

In the U.S., cases are most common in the Northeast.

Nebraska averages around six cases of the disease each year.
