Orioles Use 7-Run 3rd to Beat Rockies 8-4

colorado-rockiesBALTIMORE (AP) — Brian Roberts and Manny Machado both hit two-run doubles during a seven-run third inning fueled by Colorado miscues, and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Rockies 8-4 Saturday night to end a four-game losing streak.

Adam Jones had two hits in Baltimore’s highest-scoring inning of the season, which featured an error by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, two walks, a passed ball and a wild pitch. Six of the seven runs were unearned.

Most of the damage came against Colorado rookie Chad Bettis (0-2), who allowed seven hits, four walks and eight runs in 2 2-3 innings.

Bud Norris (9-10) gave up four runs and nine hits over 5 2-3 innings to improve to 3-1 since coming to the Orioles in a trade with Houston on July 31.

Denver DE Wolfe Suffers Neck Injury

Derek-Wolfe-Denver-Broncos-SEATTLE (AP) — Denver defensive end Derek Wolfe has been placed on a backboard and taken away in an ambulance after sustaining a neck injury in the first quarter of a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Wolfe was hurt with 9 minutes left in the quarter and on Seattle’s first offensive drive Saturday night. He was hurt being blocked on a running play where Seattle’s Robert Turbin gained 8 yards. The Broncos said Wolfe was being evaluated for a cervical spine injury and had movement in all of his extremities.

Wolfe was initially cut on the play by Seattle’s Luke Willson. As Wolfe was getting back up, fullback Michael Robinson collided with Wolfe appearing to compress his head and neck. Wolfe remained on the ground and appeared to be moving his legs initially, but medical personnel strapped him to a backboard and took him away in an ambulance.

He was down for about 8 minutes before being taken away.

(AP) — A University of Nebraska at Kearney music professor has been honored for his development of a one-handed saxophone.

David Nabb was given the Ars Electronica Award by the One-Handed Musical Instrument Trust. The One-Handed Musical Instrument Trust competition challenges instrument makers and inventors to build one-handed instruments that can emulate instruments used in classical orchestras.

Nabb won the Ars Electronica Award in the playable category. Judging took place in London at the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Nabb is a woodwinds professor. After suffering a stroke in 2000, Nabb worked with Jeff Stelling to develop a saxophone that can be played with the right hand only. Nabb will share the award with Stelling.

Rural Candidates Dominate So Far in Nebraska Governor Race

Sen. Tom Carlson

(AP) — More than half of Nebraska’s population lives in and around Omaha and Lincoln, but the 2014 Nebraska governor’s race is filling up with candidates from rural areas and small towns.

The declared field includes Republican state Sens. Charlie Janssen of Fremont and Tom Carlson of Holdrege, who have both pointed to their small town backgrounds. Falls City businessman Charles Herbster is also expected to join the race, as is Republican Pete Rickets, who would be the only candidate from Omaha.

The Democratic race includes state Sen. Annette Dubas, of Fullerton, and Chuck Hassebrook, who lives in Lyons and heads the Center for Rural Affairs.

Lincoln political consultant Phil Young says central and western Nebraska still account for a huge chunk of the votes needed to win a statewide race.

Nebraska State Fair Succeeding in New Location

state-fair-2013(AP) — The Nebraska State Fair has successfully settled into its new home in Grand Island, and organizers are looking forward to this year’s version.

The State Fair begins on Friday and runs through Labor Day.

When the fair moved from Lincoln to Grand Island in 2010 to make way for a new University of Nebraska-Lincoln research park, organizers had to offer financial guarantees to vendors.

This year, vendor space sold out in April and a waiting list for next year is growing. And carnival operators have been competing to run the fair’s rides.

Fair executive director Joe McDermott says attendance is now regularly higher in Grand Island than it was in its last years in Lincoln, excluding the final year.

If You Get Married at the Demolition Derby…You Might Be a Redneck

demolition-derbyThese are the things Jeff Foxworthy speaks of in his infamous You Might Be a Redneck jokes, but to each their own.

A Nebraska couple who met while helping organize demolition derbies got married at one this weekend.

James Rosno and Tracy Anderson exchanged vows Friday night at the Stanton County Fair’s demolition derby.

The two fell in love while working together organizing demolition derbies for nearly two decades.

But the couple’s shared passion for automotive carnage made it hard to find a free weekend for their wedding.

So they invited about 1,000 friends to the fair for their wedding.

Tracy Rosno says most of their friends were supportive, but they did endure some good-natured teasing about holding a “redneck wedding.”

Petitions to Recall Central City School Board Members Fail

central-city-ne(AP) — An effort to recall two Central City school board members has failed.

Merrick County Clerk Marcia Wichman rejected the petitions turned in Tuesday. She says petitioners hadn’t complied with a requirement that each page must state whether those circulating the petitions were volunteers or paid circulators.

The petition effort began in June, two months after the April firing of football coach Darin Garfield. School board meetings since have been filled with people demanding Garfield’s reinstatement.

The petition for recall had cited “lack of responsiveness to concerns raised by public and staff” and “failure to require accountability from administrators.”
