Huskers Practice Under the Lights
Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team continued its 2013 football fall camp Thursday night, going through a two-hour practice in full pads under the lights in Memorial Stadium.
Nebraska Defensive Coordinator John Papuchis addressed the media after practice, noting that the team worked on a little bit of everything, including scrimmaging at the end of practice.
“A little bit of everything today, we had some tackling and live work but the way we approach it, it was like a regular practice.” Papuchis said, “Everything we do in a practice for us involves everything besides taking guys to the ground, so when we do turn that up a little bit, the only difference in everything we do is we are actually finishing the play.”
Papuchis also talked about the ongoing competition on the defensive line, noting that things are going pretty good, and also senior defensive tackle Thad Randle has been impressing the coaching staff.
“The competition has been going pretty good, there is still a bunch of guys that are rolling through, I think I said there are six or seven guys that are rotating through and I still believe that is the case.” Papuchis said, “I think Thad Randle has had a very good camp up to this point, I think we can feel pretty solid that he will be lining up for us on Saturday a couple weeks from now. Beyond that it’s still a little bit up in the air.”
JP also mentioned that he is pretty impressed with senior defensive tackle Brodrick Nickens, mentioning that he is a big body and is very physical, something the defensive line desperately needed.
“Well he is a physical guy, he is a big body and is strong and eats up space in the middle. What he does well in terms of rushing the passer is he pushes the pocket for us and he is pretty physical guy in the run.” Papuchis said, “I think Brodrick, especially in the right situations can play a pretty good role for us.”
With a young and mostly inexperienced linebacker corps, Papuchis noted that the depth of the linebackers is not a big concern, considering NU usually plays a nickel with two linebackers on the field.
“Like we eluded to a week ago with the personnel that we play, and a lot of times against our offense we are at least half the time in some form of nickel package so there is only two ‘backers on the field, so from a depth perspective we aren’t hurting too bad.”
A freshman newcomer that Husker fans should keep an eye on is Lincoln Southwest graduate Josh Banderas. Banderas has been impressing the coaching staff with his play at linebacker during fall camp.
“Josh Banderas has really come a long way, I think Josh still has a lot of work to do. He is a young guy that has been here for 10 days but I think he is going to push to get some playing time if he continues on this track,” Papuchis said.
Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Friday as it continues fall camp.

DETROIT (AP) — Prince Fielder homered for the first time in three weeks, hitting a two-run shot in the first inning to help the Detroit Tigers to a 4-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.
Andy Dirks added two doubles and two singles for the AL Central-leading Tigers, who took the opener of this five-game series with third-place Kansas City. The Royals have lost three in a row after a 17-3 stretch that put them in contention for a postseason spot.

Chargers’ Woodhead Out, Bears Hold Peppers Out for Second Straight Game
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Bears Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers is sitting out his second straight preseason game because of a hamstring injury.
Peppers was expected to play Thursday night against San Diego, but the Bears held him out again after he sat out the preseason opener against Carolina. Peppers has been limited in practice for about two weeks.
The Bears also held out defensive tackle Henry Melton (concussion), receiver Earl Bennett (concussion), right tackle Jonathan Scott (right knee), long snapper Patrick Mannelly (rib), running back Armando Allen (hamstring) and linebacker D.J. Williams (strained right calf).
The Chargers held out running back Danny Woodhead (undisclosed injury), receiver Malcolm Floyd (right knee) and rookie linebacker Manti Te’o (sprained right foot).
Corey Liuget left late in the first quarter with a shoulder injury. It was not immediately clear how it happened.
Baseball Welcomes Expanded Replay
Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon is brushing off all the talk about delays and keeping the human element in baseball. He says it’s about time for expanded replay.
Players and managers at ballparks across the country largely welcomed Thursday’s announcement of the proposed video review options for next season. Many said they wanted to take a closer look at the details of the plan, but were in favor of anything that would help umpires make the correct call.
Maddon says “It makes things better. It makes things more accurate, so what’s wrong with that.”
A 75 percent vote by the owners is needed for approval, and the players’ association and umpires would have to agree to any changes to the current system.
Source: Appeals ”Final Hurdle’ to HGH Test in NFL
A person who works for the NFL says while several issues have been resolved regarding HGH testing for players this season, the league and union can’t agree on whether the commissioner will hear appeals for violations other than a positive test.
The person sent an email Thursday to The Associated Press to update the status of negotiations between the league and the NFL Players Association. The information was provided on condition of anonymity because the sides’ talks about the drug policy are supposed to remain confidential.
The email says “the final hurdle appears to be” the union’s desire to have someone other than Roger Goodell rule on appeals that involve violations of the law or “demonstrated use” of a performance-enhancing substance without a positive test.
Nebraska Youth, Families Rally for Immigration Reform

(AP) — Families, youths and religious leaders are asking Nebraska’s congressional delegation to support an attainable path to citizenship for parents who are in the United States illegally.
The group on Wednesday delivered children’s drawings, postcards and a banner to the office of U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry in Lincoln. Members are holding similar events outside congressional offices in other parts of Nebraska.
Supporters of a path to citizenship say current U.S. law tears families apart in cases where a parent entered the country illegally, but has a child who is a U.S.-born citizen.
An estimated 4.5 million children who are U.S. citizens have a parent who is in the country illegally.
Woman’s Body Found in Open Grave in Omaha
(AP) — Omaha police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in an open grave at a cemetery, and authorities are treating the case as a homicide.
Officers were called to Graceland Park Cemetery around 10 a.m. on Thursday. The cemetery was closed for the rest of the day, and a scheduled burial at the gravesite was postponed.
The graveside service was scheduled for 28-year-old Kevin McIntyre, who was shot and killed on Aug. 4. Authorities say they do not believe the McIntyre slaying is connected to the body that was found in the grave.

Missing Lincoln Kindergartner Turns Up in Wrong Class
(AP) — When his mommy called for him, the missing Nebraska kindergartner piped up.
School officials and police searched Humann Elementary School, the playground and the Lincoln neighborhood for the 5-year-old. He’d disappeared Wednesday — his second day of school — between breakfast and the first class bell.
Turns out he’d fallen in with the wrong crowd.
District spokeswoman Mary Kay Roth said the boy lined up with first-grade students after breakfast and then responded to another boy’s name when the students reached their classroom.
After his mom was called to the school, she got on the intercom and said, “You need to come see Mommy in the office.”
That’s when he stood up and said, “I need to go see Mommy.”
And so he did.
