crime-scene-police-shoot(AP) — Omaha police say a 23-year-old man has been killed in a north Omaha shooting, and one man has been arrested.

Police say officers were in the area around 2:40 a.m. when they heard gunshots. Upon investigating, the officers found 23-year-old Craig Brown on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound. Brown was taken by ambulance to an Omaha hospital, where he died.

Police say 44-year-old Dwayne Blackson has been arrested on suspicion of criminal homicide and several weapons counts. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of failing to appear on a warrant in a separate case.

Police say Blackson is being held at the Douglas County jail.

Prosecutors Drop Lottery-Doctoring Charge Against Lincoln Man

nebraska-lottery(AP) — Prosecutors have dropped a charge against a Lincoln man accused of doctoring a lottery ticket.

Jonathan Tonniges had faced a 20-year prison sentence if convicted for what his fiancee said was simply a practical joke.

Tonniges was charged after his fiancee went to a lottery office with a ticket she thought was worth $35,000. Workers told her it had been altered with a permanent marker, and the woman said she accepted that explanation and left. But workers called police.

The woman says Tonniges was playing a practical joke and that she never tried to cash the ticket. She simply asked about its value.

Lancaster County Attorney Joe Kelly said on Friday that he dismissed the case because there wasn’t enough evidence to convict Tonniges.

The man’s car was found near 100th Street and Grand Avenue.

Witnesses told police they saw only one man run from the car after it was taken.

New Jersey Man Sentenced in Nebraska Embezzlement Case

EMBEZZLIN(AP) — A man who embezzled thousands of dollars from his employer in Lincoln has been given probation, jail time and an order to pay back some money.

Online court records say 58-year-old Eugene Southworth had pleaded no contest to attempted theft and was convicted after prosecutors lowered the theft charge. Southworth was sentenced last week. Court records say he now lives in Sicklerville, N.J.

Attorneys for the company, Celerion, reported their suspicions to Lincoln police in September 2011 after a billing problem was unearthed. Police say the money was traced to Southworth’s bank account.

Judge Jodi Nelson of Lancaster County District Court sentenced Southworth to four years of probation and 180 days. Southworth also was ordered to make restitution of $20,400. The judge gave Southworth credit for two days served.

Nebraska Fall Turkey Permits Soon Available

Nebraska_game_and_parksLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will begin selling fall turkey-hunting permits on Monday.

The fall seasons runs from Sept. 15 through Dec. 31. A fall turkey permit allows hunters to shoot a gobbler with a shotgun or archery equipment, including crossbows. The bag limit is two turkeys of either sex. Each hunter may have up to two permits.

The permits are valid statewide and allow the take of turkeys from 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset.

Turkey permits cost $24 for residents, $91 for nonresidents and $6 for all youths aged 15 or younger. There is no minimum age requirement for youth.

Turkey hunters must wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange on their head, chest and back during the November firearm deer season.

Osweiler Shows He’s Learned Plenty from Manning

Brock OsweilerENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Brock Osweiler followed Peyton Manning’s cameo appearance Thursday night with his most productive day in a Broncos uniform in Denver’s 10-6 preseason win at San Francisco.

Although he didn’t produce any points as the Broncos’ battered offensive line had its hands full with the 49ers’ relentless pressure, the second-year pro displayed his accuracy and athleticism in completing 13 of 18 passes for 105 yards.

After completing just two passes as a rookie, Osweiler has looked much more comfortable in running Denver’s offense this summer, helping the Broncos breathe easier and giving Manning a high-quality backup.

While it was pretty much accepted last year that all bets were off if Manning’s neck issues resurfaced or he otherwise got hurt, there’s no longer a foreboding sense that there would be a huge drop-off if Osweiler is pressed into duty.

Rosario’s 4 RBIs Help Rockies End Skid

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Wilin Rosario doubled and homered to drive in four runs, leading a Rockies offense that batted around in the first and second innings, and Colorado snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1 on Friday night.

Francisco Liriano (12-5) bore the brunt of the Rockies’ outburst in his first appearance at hitter-friendly Coors Field, allowing a career-high 10 runs on 12 hits in 2 1-3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. With the game out of reach, Pirates infielder Josh Harrison was summoned by manager Clint Hurdle to relieve Jared Hughes and got pinch-hitter Corey Dickerson to fly out to left to close out the eighth.

Jorge De La Rosa (11-6) went five innings, shaking off a blow near his pitching shoulder from Jordy Mercer’s comebacker and keeping the Pirates in check by working out of two bases-loaded jams early.
