Maxwell Homers Again to Lead Royals Over Red Sox

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Justin Maxwell homered and singled twice to help the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 9-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.

The Royals have won 15 of their past 17 games to move seven games above .500, matching their best record of the season.

Maxwell, who the Royals acquired on July 31 from the Houston Astros for a minor league pitcher, homered leading off the second.

With the Royals trailing 6-3 in the sixth, he led off the inning with a single. The Royals sent 11 men to the plate in the inning against Red Sox pitchers Jake Peavy, Drake Britton and Pedro Beato.

Peavy, who was making his second Red Sox start since being acquired in a July 30 trade from the Chicago White Sox, yielded singles to Maxwell, Mike Moustakas and Alcides Escobar to start the inning. Escobar’s RBI single finished Peavy.

(AP) — The Chadron police chief is defending his officers from criticism by a City Council member.

Chief Tom Lordino says he wants to talk to council member John Gamby about remarks Gamby made at Monday’s council meeting. Gamby said he’d heard complaints from residents about profiling by officers and heavy-handed enforcement of ordinances.

Lordino said in a news release Wednesday that officers didn’t engage in any type of profiling and work hard to uphold “the highest ethical standards.”

Chadron City Manager Wayne Anderson has issued a statement as well, supporting Lordino and his officers.

(AP) — Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for a man charged in the beating death and rape of a 93-year-old Omaha woman.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said Friday that he plans to seek the death penalty for 19-year-old Sergio Martinez-Perez.

Martinez-Perez is being held without bond on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree sexual assault and burglary in the attack last month on Louise Sollowin, who died from her injuries three days after the attack.

Police say officers found Martinez-Perez naked and passed out on top of the elderly woman. Authorities believe Martinez-Perez was drunk when he entered the home through an unlocked door.

Authorities say Martinez-Perez is in the country illegally and had been in Omaha working as a roofer at the time of the attack.

Dismissal of Nebraska Lawsuit Over State Health Insurance Upheld

ne-supreme-court(AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld the dismissal of a racial discrimination lawsuit by a state employee who said she was offered inferior health insurance because she lives in Omaha.

Sandra Cartwright, a black woman, argued that employees living in certain Omaha and Lincoln ZIP code areas — where some 96 percent of the state’s black employees reside — were given a choice between two health insurance plans that offered inferior coverage to what employees living elsewhere in the state could get.

The state ended the practice in 2009, but said it did so for cost savings, not allegations of discrimination.

On Friday, Nebraska’s high court said Cartwright failed to show that health plans offered to those in Omaha and Lincoln were inferior to plans offered to others.

Columbus Man Killed in Accident

fatal-accident(AP) — A 21-year-old Columbus man has died in a traffic accident on a rural road in eastern Nebraska’s Colfax County

Cody Black was pronounced dead at the scene on Thursday afternoon.

The Colfax County Attorney’s Office says Black was ejected from his sport utility vehicle after he lost control of it and it rolled down an embankment. Twenty-two-year-old Rico Chavez was a passenger in the SUV. He was taken to Columbus Community Hospital for treatment and then released.

The accident is being investigated.

NPPD Won’t Boost Nuke Plant’s Output

nppd(AP) — The Nebraska Public Power District’s board has decided against boosting capacity of its nuclear power plant in the southeast corner of the state.

In December the board decided to seek federal permission to raise the Cooper Nuclear Station’s power output by 18 percent, to 946 megawatts from 800. But the board voted Friday to follow a recommendation from NPPD President and CEO Pat Pope to scrap the project.

Pope said the latest, detailed cost estimates for the project pegged it at $409 million, $120 million above an earlier estimate. He said NPPD “most likely would not see sufficient returns to justify that expense.” Pope also cited technical and other issues.

The plant sits along the Missouri River near Brownville, nearly 60 miles south of Omaha.

Two Nebraska Men Arrested in Iowa Motel Robbery

police-lights-red(AP) — Authorities have arrested two Omaha men in connection with a motel robbery in western Iowa.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says the men were arrested early Friday morning following a car chase near Minden. Authorities were able to successfully deploy stop sticks that disabled the men’s vehicle from entering Nebraska.

The car eventually lost control and crashed near Crescent. The men were extricated from the vehicle and transported to area hospitals for treatment.

Authorities say one suspect is accused of displaying a firearm at the America’s Best Value Inn near Atlantic. The suspects’ names have not been released.

Dufner Sets Course Record in Second Round

PGA-Championship-2013-Oak-HPITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Jason Dufner spent the afternoon attacking records at Oak Hill in the same manner the Chicago White Sox attacked records on Disco Demolition Night.

Dufner set one record and matched two others in taking the lead at the midway point of the PGA championship. He fired a 7-under-par 63 to break the Oak Hill course record and match the lowest round in a major tournament. He’s 9-under for the tourney, tying the 36-hole PGA scoring record held by six other players.

Dufner had a chance to shoot the first 62 in a major championship, but he left a 12-foot birdie putt short on 18, leaving him the 12th player to shoot 63 in the event. It’s also the 26th time a 63 had been shot in a major.

Matt Kuchar shot a 4-under 66 to grab a share of second with first-round co-leaders Jim Furyk (FYOOR’-ihk) and Adam Scott, two shots behind Dufner. Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson are three strokes back and one ahead of Webb Simpson, Martin Kaymer, Charley Hoffman and Marcus Fraser.

Defending champ Rory McIlroy is even through 36. Tiger Woods is eight shots off the pace following an even-par 70. Phil Mickelson barely made the cut at plus-2, 11 shots back.

Griffey Anxious About Mariners Hall of Fame Honor

Ken-Griffey-Jr.-Seattle-MarSEATTLE (AP) — Once Ken Griffey Jr. got the phone call about the honor the Seattle Mariners wanted to bestow upon him he started getting nervous about having to be the center of attention.

As Griffey said Friday, it’s easier to be standing in center field or waiting at home plate than talking in front of thousands of people.

Griffey will become the seventh member of the Mariners Hall of Fame on Saturday night. Griffey spent 13 seasons with the Mariners before retiring part-way through the 2010 season.

Griffey was lauded by former teammates and opponents during a luncheon on the field Friday. He was razzed by his father, who sat next to him, and was told by former teammates that they can’t wait for 2016 when Griffey is eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

NCAA’s Enforcement Staff Will Go Back to School

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA will soon be sending enforcement staff members back to school.

Interim enforcement chief Jonathan Duncan told The Associated Press it’s part of a broader plan to give investigators a firsthand glimpse into what campus leaders contend with every day.

Duncan took over as the department head in March after an embarrassing scandal led to the ouster of Julie Roe Lach.

In five months, Duncan has devised a plan that includes more intensive staff training on NCAA rules, investigation and interview techniques, and the ever-changing world of campus life. He also plans to hire a director of quality control, a newly-created position that he hopes will help improve NCAA relations with school leaders in an attempt to help restore the department’s tattered public image.
