Lincoln Mom Who Didn’t Protect Child Sentenced to Jail

jail(AP) — A 25-year-old Lincoln mother who didn’t protect her toddler daughter from her boyfriend has been given 100 days in jail.

Online court records say Jessica Moton was sentenced on Thursday. Moton had pleaded no contest to attempted negligent child abuse after prosecutors lowered the charge.

Authorities say Moton did nothing to stop her boyfriend from breaking her 14-month-old daughters’ wrists and burning the little girl with cigarettes. Authorities also say Moton lied to police to protect the man.

The boyfriend, 24-year-old LaDaryl Lathan, in February was sentenced to two to four years for child abuse.

Iowa Man Charged with Stealing Groceries from Nebraska Mom and Child

stealing-groceries(AP) — A 35-year-old Iowa man has been charged with stealing groceries from a northeast Nebraska mom and her child.

A South Sioux City officer says he found grocery bags of pork and bread in the vehicle of Jacob Tuttle when he stopped Tuttle for speeding and a broken brake light last week. The officer matched the vehicle’s description to that provided by a witness to a theft from another vehicle in town that day.

The witness says a small child was in the other vehicle when the man took the bags.

Tuttle, of Sioux City, Iowa, is charged with felony robbery and misdemeanors related to the traffic stop.

A public phone listing for Tuttle couldn’t be found. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney.

NU Football: Beck Likes Offense’s Attentiveness

husker footballLincoln, Neb.- Nebraska hit the practice field for the fourth time in the 2013 football fall camp Thursday night, going through a two-hour workout in shoulder pads, shorts and helmets inside the Hawks Center and on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice facility.

Nebraska Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck addressed the media after practice, noting that he is still recovering from sleep apnea surgery, but thanks all of Husker nation for the support given in his recovery.

“I appreciate everybody’s support and prayers for me,” Beck said, “At the end of the day I am sore and worn out a little bit, but you get out there and get going and once you get out there you don’t feel it as much.”

Beck seemed excited when asked about the high octane Husker offense, noting the group has performed well early in camp.

“I like what I see, I think our guys’ attention has been good, I think the first group has been pretty solid.” Beck said, “The second group—there is some younger guys on there that still have to develop, but they are very talented and I like their talent.”

Recently some of the NU’s offensive players have mentioned some very lofty goals to the media members, which seems to impress Beck, but as he noted, confidence comes from being prepared.

“Our guys are going to have to work to earn everything they get like they did last year, they worked hard, believed in the system and in themselves and we were fortunate to have some success.” Beck said, “We’ve got to do the same this year, and they are doing that, and I wouldn’t say they are out here just hanging out.”

With the departure of senior running back Rex Burkhead, Nebraska reloaded with two very talented backs in Adam Taylor and Terrell Newby. Both backs have impressed Beck so far in camp.

“I like both of those guys, both of them have a chance to help us.” Beck said, “Two different style of runners, but they both are good at what they do, and they aren’t bad at the other things.”

Beck also noted that quarterbacks Tommy Armstrong Jr. and Johnny Stanton have been, “moving around pretty well.”

Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Friday evening for their fifth workout of camp.

Denver Defense Stymies 49ers in Preseason Opener

DenverBroncosSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Super Bowl runner-up San Francisco 49ers committed three first-half turnovers, four in all, and missed a field goal in a 10-6 loss to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night in the teams’ exhibition opener.

Shaun Phillips scooped up D.J. Harper’s second-quarter fumble and returned it 9 yards for the game’s lone touchdown. Mike Adams added a timely interception as the Broncos began anew following that stunning double-overtime loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in the AFC divisional playoffs last January.

With the star quarterbacks on either side — Broncos veteran Peyton Manning and third-year pro Colin Kaepernick (KAP’-ur-nihk) — playing all of one series each, it was impossible to gauge how good their given offenses will be.

Chen Quiets Red Sox as Royals Win 5-1

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bruce Chen outdueled Jon Lester as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-1 on Thursday night.

The Royals won for the 16th time in 20 games since the All-Star break. The Red Sox, who have the best record in the American League, lost for only the third time in 10 games.

Chen (5-0), who was making his fifth start since beginning the season in the bullpen, did not allow a runner past first base until the eighth and retired 11 in a row in one stretch. He yielded five singles, walked one and struck out two.

Lester (10-7), who came into the game with a 6-2 record and a 1.64 ERA in nine starts against the Royals, needed 41 pitches in the first inning when Kansas City sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs.

Florida Man Accused of Killing His Wife and Posting Photo of Body on Facebook

facebook-logo(AP) — A South Florida man who authorities say fatally shot his wife — and apparently then posted a photo of her body on Facebook — has turned himself in to police.

Miami-Dade police report that 31-year-old Derek Medina turned himself in Thursday, telling them he had shot 26-year-old Jennifer Alfonso. Detectives didn’t immediately give a motive. Charges were pending.

A post on a Facebook page identified as Medina’s says, “I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife.”

The post claims that his wife was punching him and that he wasn’t going to stand any more abuse.

The next post was a photograph showing a woman in black leotards, slumped on the floor with blood on her left arm and left cheek. The photo was up for more than five hours before the page became unavailable late Thursday afternoon.
