(AP) — State Sen. Annette Dubas is running for Nebraska governor, so Democrats will have a primary contest next year.

Dubas of Fullerton announced plans to run for Gov. Dave Heineman’s job on Thursday. She will face former University of Nebraska Regent Chuck Hassebrook in the primary.

Dubas is a farmer and rancher serving her second term in the state Legislature.

Other possible Democratic gubernatorial candidates include state Sen. Steve Lathrop, of Omaha, and former gubernatorial candidate Mike Meister, a Scottsbluff attorney who lost to Heineman in 2010.

The Republican field is likely to be crowded as well because Heineman is unable to run because of term limits. State Sen. Charlie Janssen of Fremont has declared his candidacy while several other GOP contenders are still considering a run.

Michigan Couple Welcomes 12th Son

stork(AP) — A western Michigan family welcomed their 12th child this week — and they’re all boys.

Jay and Kateri Schwandt live in Rockford, near Grand Rapids. Their new son, Tucker, was born Sunday. Their oldest, Tyler, is 21.

The 38-year-old Kateri, who’s known as Teri, says there was a chuckle in the hospital room when the delivery nurse said it’s a boy. Teri says she doesn’t need a handbook for raising another.

The Schwandts are devout Roman Catholics who leave the size of their family to God. Teri’s sister has 10 children, and they, too, are all boys.

Dr. Bob Barbieri of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston says genetics play a role in large families with kids of a single gender. He calls the Schwandt family “amazing.”

Scott, Furyk Top PGA Scoreboard in Ripe Conditions

golfPITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Adam Scott is off to another good start in a major, shooting a 5-under 65 that left him tied for the lead with Jim Furyk after the opening round of the PGA Championship on Thursday.

Scott won his first major title at the Masters, and he was out front on the final day of the British Open before fading.

The Aussie shot a 5-under 30 on the front nine at Oak Hill, taking advantage of a course softened by overnight rain and ripe for the taking. Scott got to 6 under after play resumed following a 71-minute delay while more storms passed.

Scott’s only stumble came at the 16th, where he missed a 5-footer to take his first bogey.

Tiger Woods shot 71 after making a double bogey on his final hole.

Royals Call Up LHP Bueno From Triple-A

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals purchased the contract of left-hander Francisley Bueno from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.

Bueno was 3-3 with a 2.93 ERA and one save in 30 relief appearances and a start in the Pacific Coast League. He was 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA in his past six appearances. Bueno pitched in 18 games last season for Kansas City, going 1-1 with a 1.56 ERA.

The Royals optioned left-hander Danny Duffy, who gave up two runs on six hits, while striking out seven in 3 2-3 innings in a start Wednesday against Minnesota. It was his first big league outing since May 13, 2012 and undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery.

The Royals requested release waivers on catcher Adam Moore to make roster space for Bueno on the 40-man major league roster.

Manship Pitches Well, Rockies Still Lose to Mets

colorado-rockies

NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff Manship landed in New York at about 5:30 Thursday morning, tasked with helping the Colorado Rockies salvage something, anything, out of a dreadful road trip.

Taking the mound less than 7 hours later, Manship limited the Mets to an RBI grounder and a sacrifice fly in five innings. Too bad the Rockies couldn’t jet in some offense, too.

Dillon Gee pitched impressively into the eighth inning, keeping in check a youthful lineup missing injured All-Star Carlos Gonzalez, and the Mets handed Colorado its ninth loss in 10 games on the road, 2-1.

“I know it hasn’t been pretty on the road this trip,” said manager Walt Weiss of his club that was outscored 61-23 on the trip. “The bottom line is you’ve got to make adjustments constantly in this game. Figure out how people are getting you out and make the necessary adjustments. It’s a constant battle.”

The only other time the Rockies went 1-9 on a road trip was from June 22 to July 1, 2007. That season they went to the World Series with an inspired run. This year they are just fading fast: Colorado was 1½ games out of first place in the NL West on July 2 but is 11-21 since and are 12½ games back of the Dodgers. Los Angeles was scheduled to play later Thursday.

Manship (0-1) was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs for the start because right-hander Tyler Chatwood had inflammation in his right elbow a day after a bullpen session Tuesday. Chatwood was throwing to test a tight hamstring that forced Colorado to push back his start two days to Thursday.

Now he’s on the DL, and Manship might have earned another start.

“We haven’t made any decisions on that yet,” Weiss said. “He certainly helped himself in the equation.”

Making his first major league start since May 1, 2010, for Minnesota, Manship appeared to tire in the fourth, when the Mets went ahead 2-1.

Daniel Murphy and Marlon Byrd singled to start it off and Ike Davis walked to load the bases with none out.

That brought up rookie Wilmer Flores, who had a three-run double in the eighth inning Wednesday night.

This time, with a 1-2 count, Flores flung his bat at a low and outside pitch, sending a slow roller to shortstop. Jonathan Herrera charged and made a quick throw across his body to just nab Flores at first, but a run scored to tie it at 1.

Anthony Recker followed with a fly to medium center field. Byrd scored easily when Dickerson’s throw was way up the third base line.

A batter after Omar Quintanilla was intentionally walked, Gee hit a two-out single, but Davis froze off third and was tagged near home plate for the third out.

Colorado came out aggressive with a young lineup Thursday, but fizzled quickly.

Gee gave up consecutive singles to start the game. Colorado let him off the hook, though, when D.J. LeMahieu was tagged out trying to advance on Dickerson’s flyball to right fielder Byrd. With a runner on third base, Michael Cuddyer grounded out to second.

“It’s just been a frustrating trip for us,” LeMahieu said. “All of us are just not hitting at the same time and we’re making their pitchers look pretty good right now.”

Gee (8-8) scattered eight hits without yielding a walk in 7 2-3 innings to win for the first time since July 14. He allowed Corey Dickerson’s homer leading off the fourth inning. Cuddyer followed with a single but was caught stealing.

The rest was easy for Gee.

He was pulled to a nice ovation in the eighth after yielding a single to LeMahieu. Scott Rice relieved and walked pinch-hitter Troy Tulowitzki. David Aardsma then got Cuddyer to fly out to left field.

Filling in for injured closer Bobby Parnell, LaTroy Hawkins was perfect in the ninth for his second save.

NOTES: To make room on the 40-man roster for Manship, the Rockies recalled lefty Christian Friedrich from Colorado Springs and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with lower back inflammation. … LeMahieu had three hits.

NCAA Board Starts Discussing Governance Changes

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsThe NCAA’s board of directors and executive committee held preliminary discussions on possible changes to the governance structure Thursday.

It’s going to take a lot longer to find something that works for everyone.

Less than one month after the commissioners of college football’s most powerful conferences unanimously called on the NCAA to change the way it does business, the two committees used their regularly-scheduled meeting to continue the discussions.

Board Chairman Nathan Hatch did not give details about what a formal proposal might look like. The two committees are expected to hold more expansive discussions during a two-day meeting at January’s national convention in San Diego. No plan is expected to be voted on until at least August 2015.

NCAA Getting Out of Jersey-Selling Business

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsThe NCAA is getting out of the jersey-selling business.

On Thursday, NCAA President Mark Emmert acknowledged that it was “hypocritical” for the governing body to be selling jerseys of players and other college athletes on its own web site. He said it did not fit the NCAA’s own model. He said all of the items would be removed as soon as possible.

The decision comes less than a week after Heisman Trophy-winner Johnny Manziel was accused of receiving money for signing autographs. That would be a violation of NCAA rules, and if proven, could jeopardize his eligibility.

USA Today reported this week that some of the items sold on an NCAA site could be searched by using the names of specific players.

A North Platte man is in jail after he allegedly sold stolen property to a man.

According to a North Platte Platte Police Department (NPPD)  news release, an Officer responded to a reported burglary in the 1400 block of East 14th Street at around 3:15 pm on July 8, 2013.

The reporting party told police that he believed he had purchased stolen property from 21-year-old William Butrick.

Following an investigation, the Officer was able to determine where the property was stolen from and made contact with the owner.  Police learned that the man had also had $300 worth of power equipment stolen from his garage.

On August 8th, Officers made contact with Butrick and arrested him on an active Dawson County warrant.  Following his arrest, Butrick met with an Investigator who determined there was probable cause to charge him with Felony Possession of Stolen Property.

Butrick was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Man Pleads Guilty to Scottsbluff Thanksgiving Bank Robbery

michael-scott-scottsbluff(AP) — A Scottsbluff man accused of robbing a bank on the day before Thanksgiving has pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal.

42-year-old Michael Scott entered the guilty plea to a robbery charge Thursday in Scotts Bluff County District Court.

Scotts Bluff County Attorney Doug Warner has agreed not to refile theft and fraud charges related to more than $8,000 in losses with bank ATM cards.

Scott will be sentenced at the end of September. He pleaded guilty last month to possession of methamphetamine in connection with the bank robbery. In a separate case, he was sentenced in May to at least a year in prison for assaulting an inmate at the county jail.

Judge Denies Attorney Change for Scottsbluff Man Charged with Child Abuse

Dustin Chauncey

(AP) — A Scotts Bluff County judge has denied a request by the public defender’s office to withdraw as the legal representative of a former Gering man charged in the death of a 2-year-old girl.

District Court Judge Leo Dobrovolny denied the request made after 26-year-old Dustin Chauncey wrote a letter to the court, questioning whether the public defender’s office could adequately represent him because of its large caseload. He sought representation by the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy.

The judge ruled Thursday indigent defendants can’t change counsel at their own choose.

Chauncey has pleaded not guilty to intentional child abuse resulting in the death of Juliette Geurts, of Gering, in July 2008. He was the boyfriend of the girl’s mother.
