In 1970, singer Bessie Smith finally received a marker for her grave in Philadelphia, 33 years after her death. Janis Joplin cited Smith as one of her influences and bought the marker for the grave.

In 1975, singer Hank Williams Jr. suffered severe head injuries when he fell while mountain climbing in Montana. He returned to performing months later.

In 1982, singer Mickey Thomas of Jefferson Starship married Sara Kendrick in San Francisco.

In 1986, singer David Crosby was paroled from a Texas prison. He had been serving time for drug and weapons charges.

Anti-Smoking Battle Moves Outdoors

smoke-and-a-beer(AP) — The front lines of the “No Smoking” battle have moved outdoors.

City parks, public beaches, college campuses and other outdoor venues across the country are putting up signs telling smokers they can’t light up. Outdoor smoking bans have nearly doubled in the last five years, with the tally now at nearly 2,600 and more in the works.

But some experts question the main rationale for the bans. They say there’s not good medical evidence that cigarette smoke outdoors can harm the health of children and other passers-by. There are hundreds of studies linking indoor secondhand smoke to health problems like heart disease. But there’s been little research on outdoor smoking.

The school already offers a one-year program for a master of laws in space, cyber and telecommunications law. Its graduates have gone on to careers working for private companies, federal agencies and military units, as well as for think tanks, consultants and law firms.

Matthew Schaefer is director of the college’s Space, Cyber and Telecommunications Law program, and he says the Nebraska law school breaks new ground as the only doctoral-level space law program in the United States.

Duffy, Bullpen Help Royals to 5-2 Win over Twins

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City bullpen picked up starter Danny Duffy when he labored in his return from Tommy John surgery, keeping the Minnesota Twins guessing Wednesday night and sending the Royals to a 5-2 victory and series win.

Duffy struck out seven in 3 2-3 innings in his first outing since May 2012, but needed 93 pitches to get that far. He left trailing 2-1 on another humid night at Kauffman Stadium.

Louis Coleman (2-0) and three more Kansas City relievers managed to navigate the next 4 1-3 innings, and All-Star closer Greg Holland worked around a single in the ninth for his 30th save.

Royals pitchers combined to strike out 16.

Samuel Deduno (7-5) allowed four runs on 12 hits in 5 2-3 innings.

Elway: Broncos ‘Do Look Good on Paper’

John-Elway-Denver-BroncosDENVER (AP) — John Elway says the Denver Broncos, still stinging from their playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens in January, are primed for greatness in 2013 if they can just stay healthy and hungry.

Two of the biggest reasons for his optimism: Von Miller and Peyton Manning.

The Broncos executive vice president said he’s hopeful Miller won’t have to sit out all of September for violating the NFL’s drug-abuse policy. The All-Pro linebacker is having a terrific training camp while he appeals a pending four-game suspension.

Elway even called Miller the most talented player he’s ever seen on either side of the ball.

He was equally effusive in his praise of Manning, who is throwing the ball better and appears much more comfortable in his second season in Denver.
