Midwest Hot, Dry Spell Brings Back Drought Worries

Corny_stands(AP) — A growing season that began unusually wet and cold in the Midwest is finishing hot and dry, renewing worries of drought and its impact on crops.

Experts say corn and soybeans may not have enough moisture in dry areas to develop to full weight, which could reduce this year’s harvest.

The weekly Drought Monitor report released Thursday shows that lack of rain has caused drought conditions to expand in parts of Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, and most of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

It also shows that abnormally dry conditions have expanded in eastern Iowa and South Dakota. Rain eased drought in portions of northern Nebraska, but much of the western half of the state remain in extreme drought.

Drought also expanded in portions of Texas, Louisiana and southern Arkansas.

Murder Charge Filed in Lincoln Man’s Death

lincoln-police(AP) — Prosecutors have filed a murder charge against a defendant who’s been awaiting trial on lesser charges in the slaying of a Lincoln man.

The charge was leveled Wednesday against 24-year-old Miguel Castillo. He’s accused of killing 25-year-old Tyler Schoenrock. Schoenrock’s body was found on a rural road north of Lincoln on Dec. 30

Castillo previously was charged with being an accessory to murder. Investigators say Castillo and 20-year-old Adrian Casares took Schoenrock from his Lincoln home and then left him for dead on the road.

Two more charges were filed Wednesday against Casares: accessory to murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He’s already been charged with terroristic threats and use of a firearm.

Both men have pleaded not guilty.

Man Tells 911 He Killed His Cancer-Stricken Wife

police-lights-red(AP) — A Kentucky man who says he killed his cancer-stricken wife at her request called police to confess just minutes after the shooting.

Ernest Chris Chumbley told a 911 dispatcher in Laurel County he shot his wife twice in the face early Wednesday morning with a .32-caliber handgun. Chumbley later told media outlets from jail that she wanted her pain to end.

Chumbley cries throughout the 16-minute 911 call and says his wife had an appointment with her cancer doctor scheduled for the morning. At one point, he asks the dispatcher if he can go see his wife’s body in the bedroom, but he is told not to move.

The 48-year-old Chumbley is charged with murder. His defense attorney, Kelly Ridings, said Thursday that it was too early in the case to comment.

Tylenol Gets New Cap Aimed at Preventing Overdoses

tylenol(AP) — Bottles of Tylenol sold in the U.S. will soon bear red warnings alerting users to the potentially fatal risks of taking too much of the popular pain reliever. The step, disclosed by the maker of Tylenol, comes amid lawsuits and pressure from the federal government.

Johnson & Johnson says the warning will appear on the cap of each new bottle of Extra Strength Tylenol sold in the U.S. in October and on most other Tylenol bottles in coming months. The warning will make it clear the over-the-counter drug contains acetaminophen, a pain-relieving ingredient that’s the nation’s leading cause of sudden liver failure.

Overdoses from acetaminophen send 55,000 to 80,000 people to the emergency room in the U.S. each year and kills at least 500.

1 in 5 Boys Got HPV Vaccination in First Year Recommended

vaccination(AP) — A new report offers a first look at how many boys are getting shots designed to protect girls from cervical cancer. Health officials say the number getting vaccinated so far is a good start.

The HPV vaccine has only been recommended for boys for about two years, and rates are usually low at first for new vaccines. But the government report released Thursday shows about 1 in 5 adolescent boys got at least one of the three vaccine doses last year.

The vaccine protects against human papillomavirus, which can cause cervical cancer in girls and genital warts in both sexes. It was first recommended for girls but hasn’t been all that popular. Health officials expect it to be a hard sell for boys, too.
