Broken Bow Woman Killed in Colorado Crash

fatal-accident(AP) — Colorado authorities are investigating what caused a two-vehicle collision that killed a Nebraska woman.

The Colorado State Patrol says the crash happened on U.S. 285 near Pine Junction on Thursday.

A car driven by 51-year-old Michelle Whyte crossed the center line of the highway and collided with a 2009 Kia Optima with four people inside. Whyte sustained life-threatening injuries.

In the Kia, 73-year-old Charlene Page of Broken Bow was killed. Her husband, 76-year-old Paul Page of Broken Bow, and her daughter, 54-year-old Rhonda Rodriguez of Thornton, Colo., both suffered life-threatening injuries. Sixty-year-old Francisco Rodriguez of Thornton was also hurt.

The current condition of everyone who was hurt wasn’t immediately available Sunday.

Investigators are checking whether texting, excessive speed and prescription drug use contributed to the crash.

Lincoln Teen Uncovers Forgotten Grave Markers

eagle-scout(AP) — A cemetery where residents of a Nebraska home for the mentally ill were buried anonymously is being renovated as part of a Lincoln teen’s Eagle Scout project.

15-year-old Ethan Cecava organized Saturday’s excavations at the Calvert Street Cemetery to uncover forgotten grave markers.

Cecava also put together a map and built a kiosk to help family members find where loved ones were buried from 1872 to 1927.

Cecava picked the Calvert Street Cemetery after reading news stories about how 467 people had been buried there anonymously.

It wasn’t until a 2009 Nebraska Supreme Court ruling that the state’s mental hospitals were allowed to release the names of people buried in their cemeteries.

Appeals Court Reinstates Lawsuits Over ATM Fees

federal-court-of-appeals(AP) — A Nebraska man is getting another chance to challenge ATM fees that two banks charged without providing proper notice.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday that Jarek Charvat’s lawsuits against First National Bank of Wahoo and Mutual First Federal Credit Union should be reinstated.

Charvat says both banks violated the law because they didn’t have notices about the fees their charge displayed on their ATMs even though they did warm about the fees on screen. The law requires both notices.

The banks denied any wrongdoing in court filings.

The appeals court ruled that a lower court was wrong to throw out Charvat’s lawsuits, which were filed in January.

Santana and the Sun Help Royals Top Mets Again

kc-royalsNEW YORK (AP) — Ervin Santana scattered five hits and allowed one run in six innings, and the surging Kansas City Royals took advantage of a sun-splashed Sunday to beat the New York Mets 6-2 and win the three-game interleague series.

The Royals won for the 11th time in 12 games, helped by a pair of flyballs that right fielder Marlon Byrd lost in the glare. Both came during a three-run fifth, with one falling for a double and the other glancing off his glove for an error.

Mike Moustakas hit a solo homer for the Royals, who won their second straight from the Mets. Kansas City completed an 8-1 road trip.

Royals C Salvador Perez Out with Concussion

kc-royalsNEW YORK (AP) — All-Star catcher Salvador Perez, who was struck in the mask by a foul ball in the Kansas City Royals’ win over the New York Mets on Saturday is going on the seven-day concussion disabled list.

Perez came on for defense and was injured in the 12th inning. He finished the game but was sent to the hospital for tests because of a headache. The Royals recalled catcher Brett Hayes from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday to replace him.

Kansas City was also without right-handed pitcher Wade Davis, who is on the family emergency list, because of a medical situation regarding his brother. Davis, who left Saturday’s 4-3 win over the Mets in the first inning, isn’t slated to pitch until Wednesday against Minnesota.

The Royals recalled left-hander Will Smith from Omaha on Sunday. He is expected to be used out of the bullpen.

Nebraska Game Bird Program Sign-Up Begins

Nebraska_game_and_parksLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says registration for the Harvest Information Program has begun.

Program registration is required of Nebraska residents age 16 and older and all nonresidents who plan to hunt migratory game birds between Aug. 1 and July 31 next year. The birds covered at dove, ducks, geese, snipe, rail, coots and woodcocks.

The program is required by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It helps wildlife managers estimate the number of migratory birds killed by hunters each year. Those estimates help biologists set limits and seasons.

Hunters may register for free online at OutdoorNebraska.ne.gov/Hip or by telephone at 877-634-8687. The hunters are assigned numbers they must have with them while hunting.

Hunting permits may be purchased at OutdoorNebraska.org.

Moisture Can’t Stop Manning in Broncos Scrimmage

DenverBroncosDENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning opened the night with a couple of belly flops, then moved on to what he does best.

Splish-splashing through the rain Saturday night, the Denver quarterback engineered a seven-play touchdown drive during the Broncos’ scrimmage at Sports Authority field, capping it with a 4-yard, across-the-body scoring pass to Demaryius Thomas.

This was Manning’s first appearance at his home field since last season’s upset playoff loss to Baltimore in 12-degree weather.

With rain coming down sideways and the scrimmage in jeopardy of being cancelled, Manning took to the field and did a couple of stomach-first slides to the delight of the fans who stuck out the rain.

Later, with the rain still falling, Manning completed 4 of 6 passes during his 12 plays.
