Lincoln Woman Sentenced for Fatal Hit-and-Run

gavel(AP) — A 47-year-old Lincoln woman has been sentenced to prison for fleeing the scene after her car struck and killed a pedestrian last summer.

Online court records say Kelly Hall was given 15 to 30 months at her sentencing Wednesday in Lancaster County District Court. She’d pleaded no contest and was convicted of failing to stop and render aid.

Prosecutors say Hall was driving east on Cornhusker Highway around 9:30 p.m. on June 10 last year when 53-year-old Daniel Kreis began crossing the road. Hall told officers she tried to stop her car but failed. Kreis was fatally injured.

Hall fled but called 911 soon afterward to report the accident.

Blood tests on Hall and on Kreis’ body showed both had been drinking alcohol.

Judge: NFL, Players to Settle Concussion Lawsuits

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — A federal judge says the NFL and more than 4,500 former players want to settle concussion-related lawsuits for $765 million.

The global settlement would fund medical exams, concussion-related compensation and medical research.

The plaintiffs include at least 10 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett. They also include Super Bowl-winning quarterback Jim McMahon and the family of Pro Bowl linebacker Junior Seau, who committed suicide last year.

The lawsuits accuse the league of hiding known risks of concussions for decades to return players to games and protect its image. The NFL has denied any wrongdoing.

Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody in Philadelphia announced the proposed settlement Thursday. She still needs to approve the deal, which comes after months of court-ordered mediation.

Arizona Girl, 6, Killed When 8 YO Brother Crashes Car

fatal-accident(AP) — Phoenix police say a 6-year-old girl has died after she and her 8-year-old brother went for a joyride in their mother’s car and crashed into a pole.

Sgt. Steve Martos says the girl’s brother was behind the wheel when the accident occurred Wednesday evening. He suffered minor injuries.

According to Martos, the children’s mother had put them to bed and then couldn’t find them in their home a half-hour later.

Martos says the frantic mother went door-to-door in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, the accident had occurred a short distance away.

Martos says both children were still in their pajamas.

Fleeing Man Leaves Baby in Hastings Field

hastings-police-good(AP) — Authorities say a man suspected of shoplifting in Hastings left an infant in a field as he fled a store employee.

The man being sought, 27-year-old Jaime Loya-Marquez, and 25-year-old Alyssa Kerr were baby-sitting the child for another Hastings woman.

Police say the Loya-Marquez and Kerr were seen taking items without paying from Allen’s Shopping Center on Monday. The two fled on foot when they were confronted by store employees.

Police say Loya-Marquez ran south, crossed a railroad track and then put down the infant in a field. A store employee stopped the chase to retrieve the baby. Officers soon captured Kerr, who’d fled north.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Loya-Marquez. Online court records don’t list the names of their attorneys.

Jack Hoffman and “Team Jack” to be Awarded 2013 Tom Osborne Leadership Award

Jack-Hoffman-Nebraska-Football-ESPYLeadership Hastings will award its Fourth Annual Tom Osborne Leadership Award to 7-year-old Jack Hoffman of Atkinson, Neb. and the “Team Jack” organization formed in his honor to raise awareness of pediatric brain cancer.   Jack will be presented with the award at a banquet at the Adams County Fairgrounds in Hastings on Friday, October 25.  Tickets for the event are available now by contacting Leadership Hastings at the Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Tom Osborne Leadership Award is presented annually to a top leader in Nebraska or a top national leader with ties to Nebraska.  Jack Hoffman’s remarkable battle against brain cancer and his ensuing friendship with former Husker football player Rex Burkhead and the Husker football team has attracted national attention.  Jack suited up for Nebraska’s spring football game this year, running for an inspirational 69-yard touchdown that earned him a national ESPY Award for “Best Moment.”  Jack’s family and friends have now started the Team Jack Foundation dedicated to raising awareness and funds for pediatric brain cancer research.

The events on October 25 begin at 12:30 p.m. with a leadership seminar.  A workshop featuring Dr. Connie Reimers-Hild, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln extension educator, will begin the afternoon.  Reimers-Hild is the author of the new book Go Wild With Confidence! and a Certified Professional Coach who has worked with businesses across the world.  The keynote speaker for the seminar will be Omaha native, national leadership speaker and founder of the Leadership for Life organization Paul Bryant.  Bryant is a versatile educator and author of The Purpose Living Leader which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.  The Tom Osborne Leadership Award banquet begins that evening with a social at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the program following at 7:15 p.m.  Jack Hoffman and his family will be joined at the event by local and state dignitaries including legendary Hall of Fame football coach Tom Osborne.

The seminar and banquet are open to the public.  Tickets for the leadership seminar and banquet are available at a price of $60 each.  Tickets for the banquet only are $40 each.  Tickets for the seminar only are also available for $25 each with a student discount price of $20 each.  Sponsorship opportunities are available.  Proceeds will go to support the Leadership Hastings program.  A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to the Team Jack Foundation.  For information on tickets or sponsorships, call Leadership Hastings at (402) 461-8411.

Does Anyone Smell Burnt Toast? Truck Carrying 40,000 Lbs of Food Burns on I-80

burned-truckAn accident near the Wood River exit on Interstate 80 yesterday took burnt food to a whole new level.

A truck carrying 40-thousand pounds of food burst into flames following a blown tire.

The Nebraska State Patrol said the truck was eastbound when it apparently blew a tire.  The driver, unaware the tire had blown, continued to drive about 15 miles before a Trooper was able to track him down at the Wood River Exit.

The driver was able to get out of the truck uninjured, but attempts to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher failed.

Lake Ogallala Fish Kill Blamed on Lack of Oxygen

Nebraska_game_and_parks(AP) — The fish kill at Lake Ogallala in western Nebraska has been blamed on low oxygen levels in the water.

Over the weekend people reported seeing dozens of dead trout in the lake and canal below Kingsley Dam near Ogallala.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission biologist Darrol Eichner says the canal water tested out at 2.5 parts per million on Wednesday. Eichner says the fish need at least three parts per million to survive.

Experts say oxygen depletion usually occurs in summer because warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cool or cold water.

Colorado Theater Victims/Witnesses Can Attend Trial

Holmes(AP) — The judge in the Colorado theater shootings case says victims can attend the trial, even if they’ll be called to testify as prosecution witnesses.

The ruling Wednesday says all other prosecution witnesses will be barred from observing the trial.

Attorneys for defendant James Holmes had asked the judge to bar all prosecution witnesses from court proceedings so they couldn’t listen to other witnesses.

State court rules allow such exclusions to keep witnesses from influencing each other’s testimony.

But the judge says the court rules are trumped by the victims’ rights section of the state constitution, which allows crime victims to be present at critical stages of a case.

Holmes is charged with killing 12 people and injuring 70 in July 2012. He pleaded insanity.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Fur Real: Colonel Meow’s 9-Inch Hair Sets Record

(Twitter Photo)
(Twitter Photo)

(AP) — This is fur real. Colonel Meow has 9-inch hair.

That’s good enough to put the Himalayan-Persian mix into the 2014 edition of the Guinness World Records book, due out Sept. 12.

Owners Anne Marie Avey and Eric Rosario, of Los Angeles, say the 2-year-old cat got its name because of his epic frown and fur. It takes both of them to brush the cat’s fur three times a week.

Three independent veterinarians verified the length of the colonel’s hair and submitted their findings to Guinness before he won the title.

Avey says the 10-pound cat has his own website, Facebook page and YouTube channel with more than 2 million views.

Avey says there’s one other thing Colonel Meow does quite well too: He sheds up a storm.
