Tiger Ties His Career Low Round

golfAKRON, Ohio (AP) — Tiger Woods has tied a career high while storming to a commanding lead at the midway point of the Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods fired a 9-under 61 to match his lowest round ever in relation to score, beginning the day birdie-eagle before dropping in six more birdies. He opened the back nine with four straight birdies for his fourth career 61, 13 years after he did it at the storied Firestone Country Club course.

Woods had a chance for a record-tying 59 before missing birdie tries inside 10 feet on the 15th and 17th holes.

Woods is 13-under through 36 holes, a whopping seven strokes ahead of defending champion Keegan Bradley and Chris Wood. Bradley and Wood each fired 68s.

Young’s Rare HR Helps Mets Snap Royals’ Win Streak

kc-royalsNEW YORK (AP) — Eric Young Jr. homered with two outs in the 11th inning and the New York Mets overcame a blown lead to beat Kansas City 4-2 on Friday night, snapping the Royals’ winning streak at nine.

Young slammed a 3-1 pitch from Luis Mendoza (2-6) over the right-field fence for his first career game-ending hit and just his second home run of the season. It scored Omar Quintanilla, who had walked.

The Mets led 2-0 on a first-inning homer by David Wright, but New York’s beat-up bullpen couldn’t protect it as Kansas City scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tie it.

The Royals, whose surge matched the team’s fifth-longest winning streak, were trying for their first 10-game run since they won 14 straight in 1994.

Carlos Torres (2-2), New York’s scheduled starter for Saturday, worked two innings for the win in the 4 hour, 7 minute marathon.

Ex-Keith County Attorney Granted New Theft Trial

gavel-more(AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has overturned a theft conviction for former Keith County Attorney Blake Edwards.

Edwards was accused of misappropriating money that came from fees for a county drug diversion program he had set up and controlled as the county’s top prosecutor. He was convicted last year of one count of theft and sentenced the three years of probation.

Both Edwards and the state appealed. The state argued Edwards’ sentence was too lenient. Edwards argued, among other things, that a jury instruction that said he “must prove all of the elements” of his defense or be found guilty erroneously put the burden of proof on him.

On Friday, the state’s high court agreed with Edwards, saying prosecutors carry the burden to prove all elements of the crime charged.

Three Charged in Kansas Hit-and-Run That Killed a Man Riding His Horse

police-lights-red(AP) — Wichita police say they have arrested a man and two women in a hit-and-run accident that killed a man on a horse.

Police on Thursday arrested a 26-year-old man for leaving the scene of a fatal accident and felony obstruction of justice. Two women, ages 19 and 28, also were arrested on obstruction of justice charges.

Police say the man was driving and the 19-year-old woman was a passenger when the car hit a horse carrying 49-year-old Lloyd Ferguson and 6-year-old Eddie Caddell on July 5.

Ferguson died and the boy is recovering in a rehabilitation hospital in Lincoln, Neb. Ferguson’s horse had to be euthanized.

Police say a tip to Crime Stoppers this week led them to the vehicle involved in the accident.

FDA Links Outbreak of Stomach Illnesses to Mexican Farm

fda(AP) — The Food and Drug Administration says an outbreak of stomach illnesses in Iowa and Nebraska is linked to restaurant salad mix supplied by a Mexican farm.

The outbreak of cyclospora infections has sickened more than 400 people in 16 states. The agency says it is working to determine whether the salad mix is the source of illnesses in the other 14 states.

The FDA traced illnesses from four restaurants to Taylor Farms de Mexico, a processor of food service salads.

The agency did not identify the restaurants where the salad mix was served. The agency said its investigation has not implicated packaged salad sold in grocery stores.

Three Teens Charged in the Murder of 79-Year-Old Church Volunteer

crime-scene(AP) — Three teens have been charged in the murder of a church volunteer who was found strangled and stabbed in her central Minnesota home.

Nineteen-year-old Brok Junkermeier was charged with intentional second-degree murder Friday in Kandiyohi County. Two others, ages 16 and 17, also face charges.

Police found 79-year-old Lila Warwick Monday night after authorities went there to check on her welfare.

Prosecutors say Junkermeier said one of the teens thought Warwick had $40,000 in a safe, so they plotted to steal it.

Police say Junkermeier broke into Warwick’s Willmar home, cut her with a sword-like knife and forced her to write out a $1,500 check. Police say he then strangled her, repeatedly stabbed her, then threw her downstairs.

It was not immediately clear if Junkermeier had an attorney.

The statement also notes that some employees could move to a different location and have some moving expenses paid.

State Farm didn’t provide details about how many jobs would be lost.

The city government lists State Farm Insurance as Lincoln’s 10th largest employer, with nearly 1,400 employees.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Friday that Judge Lyle E. Strom sentenced Mark Phillips, of Walthill, to 33 months in prison. He had been found guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Walthill stabbed his adult son in the chest on Sept. 21, 2012, in the family home in Walthill, about 65 miles north of Omaha.

His son was treated for the wound and released.

The federal government had jurisdiction because the crime was within the Omaha Indian Reservation.

(AP) — Rescuers credit a digital camera for finding a father and son who became lost while hiking in northwest Nebraska.

A man and his teenage son, both from Lincoln, were hiking Thursday when they got lost in the Toadstool Geologic Park area northwest of Crawford.

When they didn’t return, the man’s wife sought help.

Authorities from the sheriff’s offices in Dawes and Sioux counties responded and formed search teams.

After about two hours, a team spotted flashes of light in the distance. When searchers investigated, they found the father and son. They were using a digital camera flash to light their way.

Dawes County Sheriff’s deputy Scott Swickard says the hikers, whose names weren’t released, became turned around in a thunderstorm.

They suffered only bumps and bruises.
