40 AGs Urge Tight Regulation of E-Cigarettes

ecigarette(AP) — Forty attorneys general are urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to meet its own deadline and regulate electronic cigarettes in the same way it regulates tobacco products.

The letter dated Tuesday is co-sponsored by Massachusetts Attorney Martha Coakley and Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine. It says e-cigarettes are being marketed to children through cartoon-like advertising characters and by offering fruit and candy flavors, at the same time they are becoming more affordable and available.

The letter says e-cigarettes are also being advertised during prime-time television hours and are portrayed as safe alternatives to traditional cigarettes. But it says they are addictive and capable of delivering high doses of nicotine.

An industry group, the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, says it agrees that e-cigarettes should be regulated as a tobacco product.

Fremont Man Gets 21-Month Sentence for Bribery

(AP) — A Nebraska business executive will serve 21 months in federal prison for trying to bribe a public official for a contract with the Los Angeles County hospital system.

Seventy-one-year-old James Barta of Fremont, Neb., was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Chicago. He’ll begin serving his sentence in early January and pay a $125,000 fine.

Barta was president of family-owned Sav-Rx, a national provider of managed care prescription medication.

Prosecutors say that in 2012, then-Chicago Alderman Ambrosio Medrano introduced Barta and a former Sav-Rx employee to a hospital purchasing agent, who really was an undercover FBI agent. The agent agreed to pass $6,500 to a Los Angeles County hospital official who could secure a contract.

Medrano, Barta and the third man, Gustavo Buenrostro of Illinois, were convicted in June.

(AP) — Authorities say a Nebraska man stole multiple vehicles and burglarized at least two homes before he was found hiding in an Iowa cornfield over the weekend.

Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner says the three-day crime spree began Thursday in Lincoln and concluded Saturday morning near a western Iowa town by the Nebraska state line.

31-year-old Michael A. Beard is accused of causing damage in two states and at least five counties.

In one case, a car that Beard is accused of stealing was found in a burning garage. In another, an alleged stolen van was found abandoned with an empty Bud Light can inside.

Investigators say they haven’t hashed out which jurisdiction will get Beard first. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.

Water Lawsuit Against Nebr. Officials Dismissed

(AP) — A federal judge in Nebraska has dismissed a lawsuit that challenged a state-approved plan to pump groundwater into surface-water streams that feed into the Republican River.

U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon ruled Tuesday that the federal government was immune from the lawsuit, and declared the case a state matter in which he shouldn’t intervene.

The plan was designed to help Nebraska meet its obligations to Kansas under the Republican River Compact, a water-sharing agreement. Nebraska has faced lawsuits in recent years for allegedly overusing its supply.

The lawsuit was filed by two local irrigation districts and three farmers in southern Nebraska. They argued that a $2.1 million pipeline project to pump the water will deny them access to their rightful share.

Charge Dropped Against Omaha Woman Linked to Deaths

(AP) — Prosecutors have dropped a federal charge against an Omaha woman accused of supplying ammunition to a man suspected of killing several people.

It’s unclear why an acting U.S. attorney dismissed the charge against 39-year-old Christine Bordeaux. A judge signed the order Friday.

Bordeaux was accused of illegally buying two boxes of Brenneke Classic Magnum 12-gauge ammunition in early August. Authorities have linked the ammunition to several killings in the Omaha area. Nikko Jenkins faces four counts of first-degree murder in the slayings.

The station reports that Bordeaux still faces charges of terroristic threats and shoplifting. Court records do not indicate if she has an attorney.

NOISES OFF Opens Saturday at the North Platte Community Playhouse

noises-offThe first production of the 2013/2014 Season at the North Platte Community Playhouse (NPCP), NOISES OFF, opens Saturday September 28th.

NOISES OFF is the first of four main-stage productions at the Playhouse this season.

Called the funniest farce ever written, NOISES OFF presents a manic menagerie as a cast of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called Nothing’s On. Doors slamming, on and backstage intrigue, and an errant herring all figure in the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play.

The production is Directed by Clayton Hill.  Hill appeared in the NPCP production of MISTER ROBERTS and has years of acting and directing experience in his permanent home, Newport News, VA.

Hill said, “Noises Off is a British “bedroom farce”.  It contains all the elements which are common to almost every farce:  Many doors, through which actors enter and exit and breakneck speed, in the nick of time to not be seen be other actors; stock characters, mistaken identity, partial disrobement, silly plots, lots of physical humor and split second timing handling props.”

Performances are September 28 and 29 with additional performances on October 4, 5 and 6.  The Friday and both Saturday performances begin at 8:00pm with both Sunday performances beginning at 2:00pm.

Tickets are $15.00 for Adults and $8.00 for Students.  Season memberships are also available for $50.00.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.northplattecommunityplayhouse.com, at the Playhouse (301 E. 5th) Monday-Friday 12:00pm-5:00pm, by calling (308) 532-8559 or at the door prior to any performance.

NOISES OFF is made possible, in part, by the support of the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment of the Arts, and is produced through a special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Health Care Law Reuniting Obama, Bill Clinton

obama(AP) — Health care is reuniting President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton.

The two are set to appear together Tuesday to discuss Obama’s health care law during a session sponsored by the former president’s foundation.

The joint appearance comes exactly one week before people without health insurance can start signing up for health coverage through new insurance marketplaces. It will be Clinton’s second effort in recent weeks to promote the 3-year-old law. Congressional Republicans insist it must be repealed.

In a speech earlier this month in Arkansas, Clinton urged opponents of the law to quit trying to undo it and to work instead to improve it.

Obama also plans to promote the law during a speech this week in Maryland.

Man Wanted in California Imprisoned in Nebraska

jail(AP) — A 42-year-old Florida man wanted on a California warrant has been given prison time in a Nebraska drug case.

Online court records say Shane Barrett, of Naples, Fla., last week was sentenced to one to two years. He’d pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. Prosecutors dropped a related charge in exchange for Barrett’s plea.

A Nebraska state trooper had stopped Barrett on Feb. 15 for following another vehicle too closely on Interstate 80 near the Lincoln airport. He was arrested after the trooper learned that Barrett was wanted on a drug possession warrant out of Sonoma County, Calif. The Nebraska State Patrol says a bottle of prescription painkillers and nearly 90 pounds of marijuana were found in the pickup Barrett was driving.
