SF DA: No Charges Yet in Postgame Fan Stabbing

stabbingSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco’s district attorney says he’s not yet ready to file charges against a man arrested on suspicion of stabbing a Los Angeles Dodgers fan after a Giants-Dodgers game.

District Attorney George Gascon said in a statement late Friday that not all witnesses have been questioned, and no independent witnesses have been interviewed in the stabbing death of 24-year-old Jonathan Denver a few blocks from AT&T Park on Wednesday night.

Gascon said he has asked police to gather more evidence before his office decides whether to file charges against 21-year-old Michael Montgomery, who police said made “incriminating statements” after his arrest.

The district attorney did not say whether, or when, Montgomery would be released from custody. Police and prosecutors did not immediately reply to messages left late Friday.

Officials: Pinnacle Bank Arena Bridge Opening Soon

Pinnacle-Bank-ArenaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — City officials say a $7.9 million pedestrian bridge linking the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln with a parking lot should open Nov. 1.

The city says in a news release Friday that the crews have figured out how to complete the bridge construction, which was delayed when a girder slipped April 19.

After a girder on the 611-foot-long bridge slipped, the bridge has gone through extensive testing.

Officials believe the problem was due to issues with concrete blocks between the girders.

Mayor Chris Beutler says the public agency overseeing the construction won’t have to pay the extra costs. He’s confident when it’s completed, the bridge will be safe.

Former Kansas Lawmaker Found Beneath Mower in Nebraska

WaverlyWAVERLY, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska authorities are investigation the death of a former Kansas lawmaker and athletics official whose body was found beneath a riding lawn mower.

Relatives found the body of 66-year-old Ricky Bowden in a building on his property north of Waverly. Lancaster Sheriff Terry Wagner says it appears a plastic toolbox blew off a shelf and onto the mower, causing it to fall on Bowden, who was working beneath the equipment.

Relatives found Bowden after checking on why he hadn’t returned for dinner.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that Bowden served for 18 years as assistant executive director for the Kansas State High School Activities Association before retiring in 2011. He also served from 1985 to 1993 as a member of the Kansas Legislature.

Landowners Challenge Process for Pipeline Route

keystoneLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An attorney for three landowners challenged the constitutionality of a law used to route the Keystone XL pipeline through Nebraska.

The Omaha World-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/18w9TKr ) the lawyer argued at the hearing Friday in Lincoln that a 2012 law improperly gave Gov. Dave Heineman the right to approve the pipeline route, rather than leaving it to the Nebraska Public Service Commission.

A state attorney told Lancaster County District Judge Stephanie Stacy the law was constitutional and should be allowed to remain in place.

The 1,700-mile pipeline from Canada to the Texas coast has drawn intense opposition by landowners and environmental groups in Nebraska.

After concerns about an initial route through the Sand Hills, Heineman approved a second route that largely skirted that region.

Stacy says she’d issue an opinion later.
