Texas, USC Tumble Out of AP Poll

NEW YORK (AP) — Texas and Southern California have dropped out of The Associated Press college football poll after ugly losses and Miami jumped in at No. 15 after its biggest victory in a while.

Alabama is still No. 1 after an off week, heading into a much-anticipated rematch with No. 6 Texas A&M on Saturday.

Oregon is No. 2. Clemson moved up a spot to No. 3 and Ohio State slipped one to No. 4. Stanford remains No. 5.

The Longhorns came into the weekend ranked 15th, but a 40-21 loss at BYU in which Texas allowed a school-record 550 yards rushing has Mack Brown’s team unranked.

Southern California was No. 25 before a 10-7 loss at home to Washington State.

Miami is ranked for the first time since November 2010.

Rail Collapse Injures 2 Fans at Colts-Raiders Game

Lucas-Oil-Stadium-ColtsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Two football fans were injured Sunday at Indianapolis when a rail collapsed after Indianapolis defeated Oakland 21-17.

Colts spokesman Avis Roper said there was no immediate word on how severely the fans were injured.

Those nearby said the fans were leaning against a railing above the tunnel used by the Oakland Raiders. When it gave way, the fans fell onto the walkway that led to the team’s locker rooms.

One fan was taken away on a stretcher and another, witnesses said, left in a wheelchair, though the Colts would not confirm that.

Fan Falls, Dies at 49ers-Packers Game in SF

Candlestick-Park-49ersSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A football fan fell from an elevated pedestrian walkway and died at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park during the 49ers-Green Bay Packers game.

San Francisco police spokesman Gordon Shyy (SHY) says multiple people witnessed the man’s fall onto a sidewalk from the Jamestown walkway, which goes around Candlestick.

According to police, witnesses say the man appeared intoxicated when he fell just after kickoff at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the 49ers’ 34-28 win over the Packers. Off-duty medics and police officers gave him first aid until an ambulance arrived, but the man was declared dead from his injuries.

Shyy says the man who appeared to be in his 30s suffered serious injuries. It was not immediately clear how many feet he had fallen.

His identity is being withheld until the medical examiner notifies his family.

Yellowstone Officials Investigate 3 YO Girl’s Shooting Death

yellowstone-campground(AP) — Yellowstone National Park officials are investigating the shooting death of a 3-year-old Idaho girl in a campground.

Park spokesman Al Nash says park rangers responded to a call from a woman Saturday morning at the Grant Village Campground who said her daughter had shot herself with a handgun.

Authorities say resuscitation efforts by emergency responders failed. Names haven’t been released.

Nash says park rangers and special park agents are conducting the investigation, and that part of the campground remained cordoned off Sunday.

Nash says he didn’t know how many family members were camping or where they are from in Idaho.

A federal law went into effect Feb. 22, 2010, allowing visitors to possess firearms in the park.

Nash says the last shooting death in the park occurred in 1978.

NU Soccer: Huskers Fall at Razorbacks in Double Overtime, 2-1

huskersoccerFayetteville, Ark. – The Nebraska soccer team showed perseverance in a gutsy, double-overtime effort on the road that ended in a 2-1 Arkansas decision in the 104th minute of action on Sunday. The Huskers, who played in double OT for the second-straight match, fall to 2-2-1 with the defeat, while the Razorbacks improve to 6-0 on the season.

The Huskers continued to display an impressive offensive attack on the afternoon, outshooting UA by a 21-13 margin, including a slim 6-5 shots on goal edge. NU’s Jordan Jackson recorded a team-high five shots, including two shots on net. Nebraska also posted eight corner chances to just four for Arkansas.

Ashleigh Ellenwood gave Arkansas the early 1-0 lead and momentum just 2:26 into the contest when she split the defense, driving left of center and powered the ball passed the NU keeper for her fourth goal of the year.

Although the Huskers outshot the Razorbacks by a 7-5 margin after 45 minutes of action, Arkansas took the 1-0 edge into halftime. NU goalkeeper Emma Stevens, who finished with three saves, made one stop in the first half, a crucial foot save in the 37th minute.

After back-and-forth action took place for much of the second half, the Huskers finally broke through to knot up the contest at the 80:48 mark. NU’s Hannah Dittmar displayed great effort by winning the ball in the box and gaining her own rebound off the post before ripping the goal high into the net for her first goal of the year and third career tally.

Nebraska’s Kylie Greischar and goalkeeper Stevens forced the match into overtime when they combined to get a block on a Arkansas chance in the waning moments of regulation.

Both teams were unable to produce a tally in the first overtime period as the match entered a second extra frame. At the 103:03 mark of the contest, Arkansas’ Evan Palmer one-touched a pass from inside the left goal box to the center from Rachel Riggs for the game-winning goal as the Huskers fell by a 2-1 decision.

Nebraska will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Lawrence for the Kansas Tournament. The Huskers will battle San Francisco onFriday, Sept. 13 at 1:30 p.m. before finishing the road trip against San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 10:30 a.m.
