Advance tickets for the “Evil Obsession Cemetery Tour” are now on sale at the North Platte Public Library.  This tour is based on the book, Evil Obsession by Nellie Snyder Yost and will explore one of North Platte’s more infamous residents, Annie Cook, as well as several people whose lives she destroyed in her conquest for money, fame and power; plus two individuals who dared to defy her.

Our Cemetery Tours consist of actors performing living history presentation. The actors will be dressed in period costume and will give a first person monologue as if they were the ghost they are portraying; they bring the ghost to life. While these tours are not ghoulish in nature, the content of this tour will give you chills as you hear these stories from our community’s past.

There are three opportunities to hear these living history presentations.  The Twilight Tour takes place at the North Platte Cemetery on Friday, September 20th from 4:00 PM-7:30 PM.   On Saturday, September 21st, you can visit the cemetery from 1:00 PM-5:00 PM.   At the outdoor performances, the actors tell their stories by the graves of the person they represent and can be visited in any order.  Allow about 2 hours to hear all of the presentations.

The indoor or stage performance of the Cemetery Tour will take place at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 24th at the Quality Inn & Suites.  This is a great tour for those who find walking the cemetery difficult.   Each “ghost” will tell their story on stage.

Advance ticket prices are $10.00 for adults (ages 17 and older) and $5.00 for children (ages 5-16) and may be purchased at the Library’s main circulation desk.  Save money on your tickets by stopping at the library before heading to the tour.  Tickets purchased at the gate or door will be $15.00 for adults and $5.00 for children.  This tour may not be suitable for young children.  This is a historical cemetery tour.  History can be scary, painful, sad, and hard to understand.  This tour contains such history and may not be appropriate for all ages of children.

Man Gets Prison for Vandalizing and Stealing from Lincoln Middle School

(AP) — A 20-year-old man has been given 10 to 16 years in prison for burglary and another conviction stemming from theft and destruction at a middle school in Lincoln.

Online court records say Bruce Grandel had pleaded no contest to burglary and aiding and abetting possession of a firearm. Prosecutors had lowered the weapons charge and dropped another one in exchange for Grandel’s pleas. He was sentenced Wednesday in Lancaster County District Court.

Prosecutors say Grandel and others broke into Dawes Middle School on Dec. 20 and smashed computer monitors, pulled down wall clocks and fired gunshots at a school window. Two computers and a projector were stolen.

Nebraska Breeder Convicted of Neglecting Animals

gavel(AP) — An October sentencing has been scheduled for a southeast Nebraska dog breeder convicted of neglecting her animals.

Authorities say they found 62 adult dogs and 13 puppies at the breeder’s kennels in Malcolm in January. The dog cages were filthy, fouled by feces and urine. Water for dogs outside had frozen.

Court records say the operation’s owner, 61-year-old Julie Hudson, on Thursday pleaded no contest to misdemeanor cruel neglect. Her sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 25.

Study Compares Nebraska, National Math Standards

math-standards(AP) — A study says Nebraska’s math standards cover most of the national Common Core content but sometimes in later grades.

The study was paid for by the Nebraska Education Department and was released Thursday. It says the Common Core standards include higher math concepts that Nebraska’s standards don’t include. The state standards do not go beyond those taught in high school advanced algebra classes.

The department ordered the study to see how well Nebraska’s standards align with the Common Core, a set of voluntary national standards adopted by all but four states, including Nebraska.

Nebraska education board President Pat Timm says that although the more advanced math concepts aren’t included in the standards, many of the state’s students still take those classes.

NPCC Lady Knights Knock Off Northeastern Junior College

NPCC-Knights-LogoThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights (8-1) volleyball team continued their winning ways on Thursday as they traveled to Sterling, Colo. where they defeated the Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen 3-1 (20-25, 27-25, 28-26, 25-17).

For the third straight game, the Lady Knights started out of the gate slow and dropped the first set. The Plainswomen took advantage as they took an early lead. The Lady Knights started to play better as the set progressed but it was too little too late as they fell 20-25.

The second set started out as the first set ended as the Lady Knights played well as they battled back and forth with the Plainswomen. In the middle of the set, the Plainswomen went on a 6-0 run to put them in prime position to go ahead two sets to none. However, the Lady Knights battled back to earn three set points before closing out the set 27-25 to even the match at one set apiece.

The third set was similar to the second set as the Lady Knights and Plainswomen battled back and forth early in the set. Once again the Plainswomen took a late lead 24-19. The Lady Knights battled back with a 5-0 run to tie the set at 24 apiece behind the serving of Samantha Kennedy. The Plainswomen earned two more set point opportunities but the Lady Knights were able to keep the Plainswomen from closing out the set before earning a set point of their own which they capitalized on to win the set 28-26 to take a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Knights capitalized on their momentum as they took a 6-2 lead at the start of the fourth set. The Lady Knights were able to hold off the Plainswomen as they enjoyed leads of 16-12 and 21-16 before closing out the set and the game 25-17.

The Lady Knights were led by Sabrina Hallahan with 10 kills and Kylie Wroot with nine. Samantha Kennedy contributed eight kills and led the team with five blocks along with Taylor King who also had five blocks. Shannon Liewer led the Lady Knights with 28 digs and Joli Hopping led the Lady Knights with 23 assists.

“It was a great win for us,” said head coach Sally Thalken. “NJC is a great team with some powerful players. We just stuck in there and never quit. We tried to stay aggressive and we worked really hard defensively. I’m really proud of our kids!”

The Lady Knights return home to McDonald-Belton Gymnasium next Wednesday September 11 as they take on fellow Nebraska Community College Athletic Association member McCook Community College at 7 p.m.

Pelini Pleased with “Best Practice of the Week”

bo peliniLincoln – The Nebraska football team continued preparations for Southern Miss by practicing for two hours on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields outside of the Hawks Championship Center on Thursday.

Head Coach Bo Pelini talked to the media afterwards and expressed pleasure in his team’s efforts, saying the game plan has come together well.

“I thought we finished up the week well,” Pelini said. “I thought that was the best practice of the week today. It was a little bit back and forth throughout the week but we’ll kind of put it to the test on Saturday.”

Pelini also talked about Saturday’s opponent, Southern Miss, and was impressed with the Golden Eagles on film.

“They are a much better football team than they were a year ago,” Pelini said. “I don’t know about the result or anything else and I know they turned the ball over six times last week but you put on the film and they’ll get your attention. They have very good skill on the offensive side, they are fast on defense and aggressive.”

Pelini added that he thinks the young players are making progress although they aren’t where they need to be yet.

“I think their understanding grows by the day, by the practice, by the period, by the rep,” Pelini said. “That’s what it has to be. Going out there and understanding the defense is one thing but having to make adjustments within a game plan and according to your opponent is part of the process.”

Pelini also named some specific young linebackers he was pleased with throughout the week.

“Michael Rose had an excellent week of practice,” Pelini said. “As did Josh Banderas. Zaire Anderson worked his tail off this week. That’s one thing about what we have going right now. We have some really good competition going on in practice and that’s going to make you better as the season goes on.”

Nebraska and Southern Miss will kick off at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Memorial Stadium with TV coverage provided by Big Ten Network.

Western Nebr. Teacher Accused of Sexually Assaulting 13 YO Girl

dark_handcuffs(AP) — A 37-year-old western Nebraska teacher has been accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

Richard Cobos of Gering is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond. He was being held Thursday before a scheduled court appearance Friday.

Prosecutors say the girl Cobos is accused of molesting is not a student in the Mitchell school district, where he taught junior high math.

Police say Cobos assaulted the girl on several occasions between 2009 and 2012 when she was staying at his house.

Court records do not list a lawyer for Cobos because he hasn’t yet appeared in court.
